Honestly I cannot stress how hopeful this movie made me feel in a time where people obsess over imperfect superheroes being terrible just like us or worse, suddenly here is a giant from the stars reminding us of a brighter tomorrow and how unfoolish it is to aspire to something greater than the world would like you to beleive. It just got to me again and reminded me of when I was given hope and inspiration to be the best person I can be as a kid, my first Ultramen were Gaia and Cosmos.

It kinda reminds me of how people idolize the punisher, when the whole point of him is that he's crazy and not somebody you're meant to agree with, and disregard superman, a ironically very human person despite his amazing powers and alien origin who inspires people to lead a better tomorrow.

He lost his entire family and is now going around murdering people. Multiple stories have shown that he has clear unresolved mental illnesses that need to be treated. He was never made to be a hero.

This film was spectacular. As someone burnt out from entertainment, Shin Ultraman felt like a breath of fresh air. Characters, cinematography, writing, it's oozing with personality. It's rare that fiction leaves such an impression on me. Mefilas especially stands out. He does the suave, gentlemanly villain perfectly. I also like how he functions as a foil to Ultraman. Whereas Ultraman acts as a benevolent "shepherd," guiding humanity on straight and narrow, Mefilas taps into humans' selfishness and fear and believes in their potential for chaos.

I completely agree with you and I feel the exact same way. As someone who’s also a bit jaded with modern media entertainment, I not only found Shin Ultraman to be a breath of fresh air when it comes to the Superhero, Giant Kaiju, and science fiction genre in general, but as someone who is very familiar with the original 1960s series and all of its subsequent sequels, spin-offs, and reboots, the Shin Ultraman movie is a masterfully crafted love letter to the entire Ultraman Mythos. The visual effects, special effects, and action sequences are absolutely outstanding. Anyone who’s a fan of Ultraman or Giant Kaiju, will love this movie. With all that being said I seriously hope we get an official sequel or a major crossover style film that sees Ultraman, his rogues gallery, Godzilla, and all of his most famous adversaries in one giant full length feature film where the stakes couldn’t get any higher. Even if that never happens, I’ll remain very content with just the Shin Ultraman and Shin Godzilla movies but one can hope right!?

I don't have anything personal against Ultraman but the junk they put on tv for children to watch puts it on the lowest level of live action entertainment. I love that Shin Ultraman has Ultraman not fuse with a human but replaces him and learns to grow and care for humanity, which, if intentional or not, kind of mirrors the 70s anime adaptation of Devilman. Where instead of Akira fusing with the demon Amon, Akira dies and Amon posses his body and grows to care for and fight for humanity.

For me, Mephilas really nailed it on screen by casting Yamamoto Koji (Kamen Rider Type-1, Hiden Soreo from Zero One) in the role, just blew me away. There's also Nishijima Hidetoshi who would go on to be Kotaro in Black Sun, really fit the part as Captain Tamura.

I still can remember the feeling when I watched it in the cinema. I was in awe. Complicated but simple. Happy but also sad. Heartwrenching but heartwarming. Funny at times, but also so serious. It contains many paradoxes. In fact I still processing the meaning until today. For me, Shin Ultraman is a story of faith in humanity restored. Along with it's philosophy, the CGI and fighting scenes are also gorgeous. Shin Ultraman is a masterpiece that will long remembered.

Shin Ultraman is definitely how a film is truly "made for the modern audience". Mainly because its made by actual true blooded fans of the original Ultraman. I've always loathe those words coming from franchise hijackers that secretly hate the source material they're working on, but for this movie specifically I can't put a more succinct way of describing it. You can just feel the sincerity and love the creators have for the OG series and how they translate it into each scene. The messages that films portrays are also very positive and timely, especially in these dystopian times we're living in.

I’d say both give off a sense of hope. Shin Godzilla shows us even in the most darkest times, humanity can come together and overcome any challenge. Shin Ultraman is essentially hope incarnate but of course thinks on how much he should actually do. Give too much and humanity gets dependent, give too little and they loose hope. Which is why he gives earth the means to do things by themselves. When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all

​@projekttaku1 Shin Gojira is about criticism of the Japanese government and how its too slow to react, and its leaders are too scared because they put too much pressure on themselves when it comes to failure. It says that hope and the power to adapt can often come from the misfits and neglected within our own ranks - the normal people can often rise up and do what the leadership is too paralyzed to do.

I made a good move rewatching all of the original 1966 Ultraman from beginning to end, to prep for Shin Ultraman. Although it has some of its own modern twists and flavor (like removing the grunts which I kinda don’t like but oh well) the movie did an amazing job going over the highlights of the original series’s plot. It also takes a lot from so many other Ultraman media such as the anime OVA, the misprint, and Narita’s original artwork. It’s truly a love letter made by fans, for the fans.

LOVED Shin Ultraman! While the story and characters weren’t as good as in Shin Godzilla IMO (and yes, Ultraman felt a little rushed), overall I loved every bit of it. The old school music and homages were fantastic, and the effects and cinematography were done beautifully. Can’t wait to own it on physical media. The fight against Gabora was my favorite scene.

It was crazy nostalgic to see Ultraman through the modern lens, from people behind Eva and Shin Gojira, no less. I would've liked if they added the legacy sounds of the og grunts and if they had more time to flesh out the story, but overall I enjoyed it immensely and loved the hopeful and optimistic themes akin to Superman. Can't wait for Shin Kamen Rider, for sure. I wonder if they're making something big with these Shin films, or if they'll continue to revitalize Japanese cultural icons like Super Sentai materials

I was utterly delighted by the show, couldn't help by clap at some of the sound effects, and I had a smile on from the amazing open to the end. It was a great experience for a long time fan. A great story and lots of call backs. I brought my wife, who has seen several kaiju movies with me, but hadn't seen any Ultraman (she doesn't care for superheroes much). Afterwards she said it was her favorite kaiju film, even better han Shin Godzilla (a movie she'll put on for background entertainment when we're gaming or painting). She asked when it would be on blue ray as we were walking out. That's high praise from her.

The best part about this movie besides Mephiles is Zoffy's character. He isn't the villain. He's just doing his job. He was enforcing what he was told to do by sending out Zetton. It's only when Ultraman convinces Zoffy to let him go and sacrifice his life that he realizes what he tried to do was wrong. We didn't need a dramatic fight between the two Ultras. The fight was won with reason.

Honestly I'm so glad that the Shin series was started because having now watched Ultra Q and Ultraman it makes me love Shin Ultraman that much more. It was the right film at the right time.

Nicely done. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. The film took me back to a 6 year old me watching this and Space Giants in rural New Jersey, 50 plus years ago. Some of the callback elements really moved me. I went in hoping for some references to Susumu Kurobe, and the Alien Baltan. When the credits ran, I found that I didn't miss them at all. Not just the shows either , the toys they had back in the 70's from the shows were awesome . 3 foot tall robots with spring loaded fists , the 6 inch all metal action figures with spring loaded fists . Watching Shin Ultraman brought back so many memories .

I don't quite think it falls short of Shin Godzilla by any extent, I think it was more a matter of the two having very different things to convey to the audience. Overall I think it stands as probably the best way to modernize the original concept of the first series and still give it its own identity.

I loved Shin Ultraman more in hindsight simply because the polish works really well with the legit unrealism of CGI special effects. If anything the feeling of Ultraman's precise and stilled movements combined with his size gives him such a distinct uncanny look in his movements. And that is far more appealing that the rotten noisy effects of most modern blockbusters. If anything Shin Ultraman shows you that operating on limitations can bring out better aesthetics and pacing. Because I'm not sure what else could have been added to such a well paced and emotional film.

Shin Ultraman is currently my favorite movie of all time. As a massive Showa fanboy, I was reduced to a cackling, euphoric mess every time a classic ‘66 scene was referenced. It also helped that I was probably the only person in that theater so I could mimic every iconic grunt, screech, and roar to my heart’s content. (Zetton’s is my favorite, despite it just saying its name repeatedly) The visuals, the characters, the dialogue, the action; it was everything I could have dreamed a high-budget reboot could be and more.

The best adaptation of any classic series. It feels different and yet familiar. Very glad they kept the music and SFX and also recreated a lot of the scene. And yeah, the transformation at the end feels as exciting as when i feel as 4 years old. Lack of shuwatch was a pity but, i was just too happy with such faithful adaptation that still captures the excitement of the original series. 9.5/10

Based on the trailer and the Shocker side manga, spider man, bat man, bee woman and presumably scorpion man are in the movie so they are adapting ep 1,2,3 and 8 and along with introducing ichimonji so they could adapt bits of ep 14 and 15

Shin Ultraman is probably my favorite superheroe movie in years, close to the Dark Knight. Way better than some MCU movies and DC movies. You can feel the passion and love for this character, how empowering it is, and, overall, is so fun.

This movie truly reinvented Ultraman in a way that I needed. The CGI was fantastic, and the action delivered to my expectations. I also notice that Ultraman's human form is similar to Ultraseven's and Mebius'. There's normally a duality between Ultraman and his human form, but this time it was just Ultraman being fully conscious. That sounds about interesting. I would love to see a sequel to this movie, and I wonder what other Ultramen can be reinvented in that movie's universe.

Being old enough to have experienced the original Ultraman series in the early 70's, along with Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, I was a very young impressionable kid that just fell in love with these shows. Then later in my adult life, I managed to watch every series and episode of Ultraman up to Ultraman Blazar; many of which I have in my personal DVD collection. I have yet to lose interest and optimism for the direction of the Ultraman TV shows and movies. Even Shin Ultraman made me feel like a kid again, including the reference back to Ultra Q -- I absolutely loved it all. Yes, there are little things about many of the shows I could pick at, but nothing I'd care to share; they're just personal issues I have with some little things. But ultimately, I focus my attention to the show as whole and as an enjoyable story that brings me incredible joy and happiness. I tend to spend very little of my time focusing on the periphery; set designs, costumes, characters, etc., to pick at, such as, I am not a fan of CG but love Live Action most of all ...I still just simply love the shows. I am now going through each and every series and episode of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai Ranger as well; two more shows I have absolute love for, and most of which I did not have available in my childhood, but now I have them all in my collection, I get to enjoy them all as well. I just love Toei for all they've done in making wonderful shows... to me, Toei is a blessing for my life, so many wonderful series beyond Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Ultraman. But to me, Ultraman is important beyond a show, it is a spiritual journey of perseverance of finding value in life, it is of always about supporting the ideal of respecting and protecting nature, earth and life for the sake of humanity and hope -- hope for a better and safer future for all.

This video brings to mind a moment from Ultraman Saga, during the final battle between Saga and Hyper Zetton. Saga is a miracle fusion of three Ultramen from different backgrounds, and Hyper Zetton is an artificial god created from the sacrifices of thousands of people. As the fight goes on, humanity flies in, and says: "Ultraman, we believe in you, do you believe in us?" And the response is: "I always have."

I absolutely freakin' love that Shin Gomess' CG model was actually a "recycled" CG model of Shin Godzilla in reference to the fact that the original Gomess suit was a modified Godzilla MosuGoji suit.

Shin Ultraman is……strange for a remake The plot are,undoubtedly very cramped,yet feel natural despite being too fast It's definitely something come from OG TV show,but doesn't meant is focus on kids The only regret are why human is worth saving,if most of them are power hungry and selfish? Adding 20 more mintues for Ripia learning the beauty of humanity from SSSP would have been better I will give it a 8.7/10,the CGI are superb in Tokusatsu industry,while retains the feel from OG show in modern setting I am definitely waiting Shin Ultraseven or Return(Anno favorite show)

Mr. Blunova, this is an outstanding review! I saw another one on facebook, and all they said was that it was "a good remake but structurally all over the place". After seeing this and the comments, I'm relieved that some true fans really like it. This review is perfect, and the director Higuchi made every scene and transitions intentionally to be an homage to the original. And, as Blunova pointed out, the writer Anno Hideaki wanted this rebooted Ultraman to look as much like the original creator Narita's Ultraman as possible. Despite speculation, the production company didn't run out of money, and every throw-back effect (like the black-and-white final fight scene) was intentional. I watched it when it first came out in Japan with no subtitles of course, but that just made me focus on the movie with my limited Japanese lingusitic knowledge. So, I recommend that if you didn't get it the first time, try just watching it for the awesome visuals sans subtitles, and you will see that it is a great movie. Make some popcorn too. Higuchi Shinji is amazing! And, by the way, Mephilas (Yamamoto Koji) steals the m#ther f@#king show!

I loved it. I enjoyed all of the fights, though I think my favorite has to be against Alien Zarab. Shin Ultraman was amazing to see up on the big screen. If it would be handled with just as much care as the original, I'd love to see a sequel. I would just hope that the scope of the film could be bigger.

Thanks for this video. I was really looking forward to Ultraman Shin but a lot of the pacing choices, not to mention obscure references, were lost on me. This has helped me appreciate it in a new light.

As for me i love it because of how well they made the stories is. I thought it's gonna be not that good but after watching it, it's so phenomenal and so original to the story line. Old but new in simple word just like shin godzilla as well

Yeah the main issue with the movie is how it tried to fit too many things in a short time, and those camera angles keep making me say "am I watching Evangelion again with these low angle shots?" Ideally the pacing would be great for duology so some stuff could still be expanded without overstaying its welcome, but I guess Anno only had this one chance so he had to put all the eggs in one basket.

And how could I forget, the shear HYPE that's going to come when ultra seven gets announced. Can't wait to see modern eye slugger in action and the CAPSULE MONSTERS HOW COULD I FORGOT THE ORIGINAL CAPSULE MONSTERS?!! SEVEN IS GOING TO BE SUCH A CHAD I JUST KNEW IT!

I can remember being in kindergarten re-enacting Ultraman during recess. We found an old bicycle grip in the playground and that became our beta capsule. Lol!
