I love how they weren't afraid to play all the goofy stuff straight. There are so many goofy costumes but it all works within the world they set up. I'm glad they kept the blindingly sincere optimism of the manga. I think we needed a character this openly optimistic in modern TV.

I love that we got to see stuff they off-screened in the manga like Zoro vs. Mr. 7. I was not expecting them to make it so clear that Zoro has killed people. It’s more ambiguous in the source material. And I love how they did the wanted posters!

Ok so in the very first chapter of One Piece, Luffy famously says he'll need about 10 crewmates. In this LA adaptation, he happens to be talking to a News Coo, so he instead says "10 people... and a bird" in order to like invite the coo to his crew. Which is cute and of course the bird says no. But also I'm over here like "ODA RETCONNING IN KAROO MAYBE? LET'S GOOOOOO"

That was such a cool moment! I've only seen bits and pieces of the anime (I'm a OP manga reader primarily) but I still recognized it immediately. It added even more emotional weight for existing fans of the series to an already important moment in the protagonist's backstory.

So I'm only up to EP 5 and I can't believe how consistently good this show is. There hasn't been an episode where I'm not grinning from ear to ear, or exclaiming out loud (to the bewilderment of those around me) about something happening on screen. Hearing Binky's Brew in the background of the bar scene in episode 1 had me nearly in happy tears. Seeing Jeff Ward bring Buggy to life was astounding. Witnessing Kuro be down right terrifying in the mansion was great. I wasn't expecting the cast or crew to put this much love and passion into the project, but here we are with (dare I say) the new gold standard to live action anime adaptations.

as someone who could never get into the manga or anime, the live action was a GREAT entry point for me. it wasn't as overwhelming to start bc it's only 8 eps and not a thousand, and it grounded the style just enough that it kept the core aesthetics while making it all just a bit more _human,_ which is something i think i needed. im super invested in this world that never held much appeal for me before now!! i really really hope they renew for a second season

Zorro mentioned during the Whiskey Peak arc that Baroque Works tried recruiting him once, so that's in-line with what we already knew. There’s a theory that the lady at 2:00 is actually meant to be a pre-transition Sir Crocodile. Honestly… kinda makes sense. The camera does focus on her so she doesn’t seem to be just a random character. But no character I know of really fits her appearance. We know Crocodile was at Roger’s execution, but his face was obscured so we don’t get to see what he looked like back then.

At the first signs of other rewriting later, i got a little hesitant, but reminded myself how much Oda praised this and stuck thru, and found myself pleasantly surprised that it gave me a new viewing experience, vs like, watching the anime after reading the manga where I essentially know how story beats are gonna resolve, I felt like I got to enjoy it as much as new viewers with how things were changed up, and I think they were very smart choices to make!

I never thought I'd enjoy a live action anime adaptation this much, but I'm left smiling after every episode. The chemistry between these characters is some of the best I've ever seen in any show. The actors have clearly put a lot of work into embodying the essence of their characters, but they still feel fresh and grounded. I was actually a bit disappointed with Shanks. I don't know if it was the acting or the costume design or some of both, but I just really wasn't sold on him, and that's weird because out of all the characters in this world he's one of the most regular guys out there. But all of the Straw Hats plus a lot of the other characters are perfect. ESPECIALLY BUGGY HOLY COW I LOVE HIM CHEFS KISS The Shanks thing is a small gripe. My only "big" gripe, which is still overall not that big, is that the cinematography and editing is just often so very.... Netflix. Like some of the colors are washed out, night time scenes are almost impossible to see, so many of the shots are claustrophobic shot-reverse shot close ups. To have such an idiosyncratic piece of media, I want the adaptation to feel different from the norm.

It’s fun (which at the end of the day is what sets one piece apart from everything else out there for me, it’s just the most fun) and feels like the creators actually have some knowledge and appreciation for the magical story that is the source material- as well as noticeable experience with both anime and film making. The music is lovely and underrated too, it’s a cool mix of the classic motif based soundtrack we’re used to from the anime and the more cinematic pirate music of POTC!

Absolutely the best manga/anime live action adaptation I've seen. It's definitely it's own thing, and that's great. As long as it works well, rewriting stuff is absolutely fine. My guess for how season two would work, assuming it would be 8 episodes again, is: Ep 1: Logue Town Ep 2: Laboon and Whisky Peak Ep 3: Little Garden Ep 4-5: Drum Island Ep 6-8: Alabasta Chopper is the big question mark of a potential season 2. Besides his yeti mode being possible to do as a costume, likely he would have to be all CGI.

I like a lot of the changes and condensing of the East Blue saga they did, but I do feel like the show occasionally fumbles a bit on the execution of those changes. For example, just in the first episode I feel like they forgot to show why Helmeppo and Captain Morgan were villains. Helmeppo was mildly rude to Rika at the bar, but Zorro is the one who escalated that situation. Captain Morgan does string up Zorro for beating up a bunch of Marines in order to coerce him into joining up, but that does seem arguably justified, as Zorro did pick a fight with a bunch of Marines and then beat them up. I could have used a scene of Helmeppo threatening the townsfolk and Captain Morgan abusing his power a bit more. But overall, I liked it. I would happily watch more.

Having watched the first couple episodes, it’s wild how well it works! As someone who’s only read the first volume or so of One Piece, it felt like it hits the beats it needs to hit while moving at a natural pace, never feeling too rushed, but getting the major characters into position so we can establish how they work together and why we like them. The action choreography is fun, the shot composition is well considered and comic booky, and the performances and production design are top notch! The only thing that gets me is that, maybe because of just how weird One Piece’s world is, seeing it in live action is always gonna have a bit of that “fan film” energy? But I was surprised at how little it cropped up so far - mostly around Axe Hand Morgan and the snails, really. This is the level of quality in adaptation that I wanted Cowboy Bebop to have, and it’s nuts how poorly that went and how well this is going!

I’m surprised how much I dug this- aside from some issues I had with the restructuring (I do get why) and the cinematography/color grade, this more than lived up to my expectations. Feels damn good to have the people who had this understand why One Piece works and legitimately cared about adapting it for a different medium. Hope they improve upon their craft (and maybe get an episode or two more for Alabasta), and I’m down to see what they do!

I only got excited about it cause of all those hype videos you made, and yeah I loved it! Wonder if it'll get a full video talking about the whole season. Like I'm especially curious about all the restructuring. I didn't watch a lot of the anime, but like I did see they rearrange a loooot in those arcs I recognized.

I've never watched or read One Piece, seen a few videos on it, but the sheer glee I get from your reaction is more than enough for me to want to head straight over to Netflix and start watching this. Is it silly and comical? Yes. Does it work in the universe we're given? *Hell yes*. Luffy being goofy and energetic just seems absolutely perfect to me, and reading comments from other people stating that Iñaki *is* Luffy just hammers home how brilliantly the casting has been done What really stands out to me and pushes this adaptation to the top is the use of the maps and wanted posters. It seems such a simple thing but the transitions between he map to real life and the wanted posters to the character adds so much character to the whole thing. The discussions of nods and hints towards future storylines also shows that the writers and directors know which direction they want this adaptation to go in Which, speaking of, seeing as there's also been discussion about what arcs could be cut, trimmed down, or woven into the narrative makes me hope that - continuing development and quality presumed - this has the potential to be the quickest way to get into the franchise

Liked the show. I'm pretty sure they're probably gonna keep Whiskey Peak and cut Little Garden instead. One is basically just a regular town and the other is a big ass jungle with giant flora and giant fauna, which I'm sure would be hella expensive to recreate. Hopefully they'll find a way to keep Dorry and Brogy though

I am a huge One Piece fan. I eagerly await each new manga chapter and anime episode each week. And I LOVED this adaption. I can confidently say that even if I weren't a One Piece fan that I would still love it. The bad guys are somehow better portrayed in the Live Action adaption. The swearing from them and them flat out killing people lands nicely for being bad guys. The Buggy is PERFECTION. He was my favorite adaption of the whole thing and I hope for more seasons just so I can see his other interactions with Luffy in the future. My next favorite adaption is Nami. Her sassy, kind of bitchy personality early on is spot on. Then Luffy. As you pointed out "that's Luffy". I actually think my least favorite is Zoro, actually. I can't quite put my finger on it, but his character just misses for me just a little bit. I think it's due to missing some of his humorous outbursts during the anime. They make him too no-nonsense in the live action whereas the anime plays off of his no-nonsense attitude to create humor. He's just a little too level-headed in the adaption. I want to see him lose his shit when Sanji calls him "Moss Head" lol.

I was a little disappointed with the wound effects throughout. Especially against arlong. The lack of injury on Luffy made the fight feel less intense. Same with zoros "damage" from his fight with Mihawk. Dude bled like three drops of blood. Besides that I enjoyed the whole thing thoroughly. They have a good thing going and I think if they keep the same people working on it the show will only improve

I have... never watched One Piece, it's such a daunting body of work, mountainous in scale. I have a hard enough time keeping up with seasonals. This is the straw that breaks the camel's back to make me want to watch One Piece. Maybe I'll watch this first.

The thing that surprised me the most is how diverse the cast is. Most of the time in live action anime adaptations, like FMA and Death Note, it's just Japanese actors and that negates the whole point of some anime that have such varied characters.

i have only watched a handful of One Piece episodes over the years (ironically, mostly the episodes covered by Netflix), but I am very impressed with the live-action Netflix version.
