It feels like two people having creative differences, with one partner wanting a faithful adaptation and the other wanting to do their own take on the series. Also something I've noticed about the live action adaptations is that I feel like the makers forget that the main three are still technically children because yes we saw them trying to save the world, they still got to be kids while doing it.

Doing a strict adaptation would've defeated the purpose imo. Doing a distinct AU (and ADVERTISING IT AS SUCH, not a faithful remake) or a new Avatar series entirely would've been preferable.

Major change I'd have liked: Kuruk's "failure" as an avatar could explain why MALE waterbenders are discouraged from battling (lacking the necessary spirituality)--in fact, this show could've made Haru a waterbender who Katara encourages to learn how to bend in the NWT. Maybe Pakku could even be his father/grandfather in this version.

🌊 Personally, I feel it was very rushed, I guess since the season only had 8 episodes, you can only fit so much from the original show in. One thing I did like was the blue dragon episode, but yeah, the original show will always be superior but I will watch the new seasons when they come.

Like Joey Drew once said in Bendy And The Dark Revival. "Just a pencil and a dream, it's not enough. You have to have a heart." This show, while the looks are there, the world building and clothing and such in ways, the heart just feels hollow in the live-action. The heart as in the story telling and the characters that are leading the story. Well, expect for Zuko A little and Iroh a little bit. If they wanted to make a 'Good' Live action adaptation they should have... 1. Respect the Audience. Both the new and also the Old ones that are familliar with the show. And more importantly, let them figure things out themselves and not tell in long monologs what's going on. Give them the visual message and let them chew that information themselves. Show don't tell. 2. Respect the source material they want to adapt and actually put effort into understanding it with heart and not just mind. 3. Write with the respect it deserves. You can add changes, you can put in new materials. BUT AS LONG AS YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORLD AND THE STORY OF THE OG MATERIAL, AND THE CHARACTERS WITHIN, AND THINK OF ALSO HOW THE NEW CHANGES AND MATERIALS COULD FIT INTO THE UNIVERSE, then you should be fine. And this is kind of where the smoke is. The problem. The lack of understanding of the OG material. And mostly just go into the project with thinking, and with a lack of heart. Bottom line.: I don't support making live action adaptations of things that are already succesfull, but if you wanna make one, but also want to present it as something new, make sure you go in an understand it's and respect it. If only the writers of NATLA actually bother to do more research and actually put in the work of writing instead of buchering up the show's story and restrict it's characters from their spirits. No wonder the OG writers left the project long ago. PS.: Sorry for the long comment. Had to let it off my chest. Especially when I feel like story telling feels like it is dying a little, along with animation... And the fun as you kinda said...

🌊 That thumbnail, though xD LOVE that face, LOL Well, like I said on the previous part, I personally did enjoy this adaptation, even if I acknowledge it has flaws and definitely doesn't feel as special as the original. I didn't even mind that Katara was calmer in this version, but I agree that something was missing and that her status as master didn't quite feel earned. That part was disappointing, but I definitely feel like that's more on the writers/directors and not so much on the actress. I've seen her in other stuff, and trust me, she can act. Here's hoping she gets better material to work with in the next seasons. I agree that Yue was probably one of my favorite adapted characters in this version, she was really cool and likeable, and her abilities made sense. I am bummed that they couldn't get a better looking wig for her, because her look did take me out of it a bit. 😬 Netflix Yue's personality with Movie Yue's look would've been the ideal combo, but alas. Regardless, I hope we get to see her in spirit form in the next seasons. All the praise to Zuko and Iroh. They really were the best and MVPs, nothing else to add there. And I just wanted to point out something regarding your speedpaint, and it's that I 100% relate to the struggle of drawing braids. MAN are those hard! 😅 But the Yue chibi ended up really cute! And do you mind me asking why the sketch looks a lot more wiggly than usual? I couldn't help but notice that. 😅

XD I'm glad you enjoyed the expression XD And I'm glad you had fun with the show! It's good to know that Katara's actress does have the acting chops. Hopefully they'll throw her more of a bone next season! Braids are my enemy when it comes to hair XD And about the sketch, I did the initial sketch with my mouse just for fun (that's why it was wiggly) lol And then I did the more serious sketch with my tablet~ Thank you

I didn’t watch it (I don’t have Netflix). However, to add to Zuko’s and Iroh’s dynamic, a detail I appreciate as foreshadowing is when Zuko is going to sneak into the Northern Water Tribe, Iroh starts to reference his son. Zuko, with a look of concern, responds with, “You don’t have to say anything”, and hugs him.

Hurray I can talk about my most hated and most beloved episode. Oh boy! On the interpretation of live action Azula I absolutely hate her character now. I loved to dislike her back when I was a kid when I watched this show for how she acted and I still do when I go back and rewatch the episodes. She was cruel, composed, and was always right behind team avatar. Even Iroh hated her and maybe even feared her a bit. Now to have her be whiny and her “almost isn’t good enough” scenes don’t feel like she’s working hard due to striving for perfection herself, she’s working hard as someone who doesn’t know who she is yet and that’s kinda sad. Her power feels also very lackluster even though she took over Omashu. I love good villain characters. Sometimes you don’t need to humanize a Villain to make a good villain. She’s not social at all. She’s conniving and always level headed. She knows she’s a prodigy, but this live action Azula just feels so…weak. She honestly does feel weak and not like a powerful person, she feels nerfed if you will. Maybe it’s just my love for Azula and my desire to have good Villan characters back, but I miss cut throat Azula and Mai and Ty Lee being here this early doesn’t make sense at all. Yes it probably has a lot to do with the fact Ozai treats her differently now than in the og and that must add to the dislike, but even then…it just doesn’t feel powerful enough. Hate they teased her blue fire. That made her very interesting compared to other fire benders. She’s the only one who ever had blue fire and we only see a small bit…not good enough is what og Azula would say. My partner adores this Azula though and hates her character in the original so…eh? I don’t know maybe I just like her a lot as not having any humanity. My partner enjoys this more than them having this evil for evil’s sake but she was good at what she did but that’s just their opinion. I absolutely hate episode five. It’s the worst episode. This makes me know full well that they aren’t adapting the library scenes because if we were Zoh would have needed to go to the library but fire nation priests just…happens to have stuff about the water tribe? That just seems so out of place. I wish we had little kid versions of Sokka and Katara. Like why can’t they look like children. They just look the same and it feels like everything going on only happened maybe like a year ago when these events took place when they were like little children. I know they could have gotten some much younger actors for these flash back scenes. Kai the face stealer is creepy which still is great but Aang needing to not show emotions around him didn’t make the scene as tense as it could have been. The scenes with Monk Gyotso were very touching and all of it felt nice to see. Now. Episode six is the best episode. Why? Because they basically changed nothing for the Blue spirit. It all felt real and interesting and the action scenes were amazing. That’s how you do an adaptation properly. Then there are the 41st. Oh that’s soooo good. It’s sooooo good. I did like Zuko had the guts to fight is father that’s cool, but the back lash for him “sparing” his father hurt way worse to me. Still wish he was younger though. The extra scene with Ozi was just amazing. Zuko looked so hurt. The general of the ship didn’t need to say they were the 41st group if he was just silent with the reality that would have went over much better, but over all that episode was just amazing. Truly the best episode in the whole series. Seven is kinda meh. I still feel like Aang should have water bended a bit through the first season. I do like though that we see Katara try at healing a bit. That was interesting. Yue is fine. She’s ok. She has more personality than she does in the og which is very sweet. I also like they show her watering bending. Makes sense that she would as she has the moon spirit in her. I also was someone who was like “Mmmmm this fox kinda sounds like Yue if they were a fox. Cool cool.” Then I was right. Then making her not engaged seemed so strange. Like…why? You got rid of a lot of turmoil by keeping her single. Having her not be now is weird. Also having her guy who was supposed to be stuck up and rude not being with Yue AND now be nice is just…so strange too. Why make him nice? That doesn’t add to Sokka’s character at all. It just sucks. Katara is just…mehhhhhhh in a bad way. Katara was and still is one of my favorite characters in Avatar. I vibe with her so much, but this? Give me angry Katara. She is not a master at the end of season one. In season two we get that clarification from Pakko that she is a master after he teaches her and Aang and that she is better than Aang. They made her weirdly op which is so very odd. Episode eight is meh. The whole Aang losing himself in the water spirit just felt so…UGH!? I don’t understand that at all. It felt so strange to give that at the final. Azula taking over Omashu was ok I guess, but the whole comet thing not being said was kinda strange but season two has been green lit so meh. I really hope they don’t ruin Toh. Oh god please don’t ruin her. Over all still a C+ just like the ember island play the effects were good though 😅 but really Zuko and Iroh really are stand outs. They nerfed Katara and they HEAVILY nerfed and humanized Azula who to me at least doesn’t need to act human to be a good Villain. My partner believes otherwise since they love her interpretation. I will watch season two by and three but this just really made me watch the og and appreciate it more especially the voice acting and animation. All hail animation. It’s a truly wonderful media and shouldn’t just be subjected for just children. Great review sorry for the long comment 🥲

🌊I agree with the conclusion that you came to at the end. The show wasn’t all bad and had some good stuff in it. But it also had some major issues, especially when compared with the original show. Because the main heroes apparently aren’t allowed to have flaws anymore, I wonder how the new show runners will handle Katara being tricked into learning blood bending, swearing that she will never use it, and then using it on the man who she believed killed her mother. I thought that those were some of the best episodes in the entire series, especially because of how they handled the themes of revenge and forgiveness (the show never says who is right, but it is heavily implied that Katara is the one who is in the wrong). But if Katara isn’t allowed to have flaws in this live action adaptation, will she go through all of that, or will the show runners just cut those episodes? I also felt your pain when you were struggling with those braids. There are some things that I just can’t seem to draw right no matter how many times I try to draw them (I’m looking at you, heads facing any direction other than straight ahead).

I think both adaptations have their ups and downs. I remember sitting to watch the movie with my family and my whole family was REALLY hooked on the world of avatar. My aunt even said she REALLY wanted to see the second movie. I had to break it to her that their wasn't going to be a second movie and she riot on why. So I sat down and explained to her what happened. She said it was dumb. I said it is what it is. And I went to this show with the same mind set, would it be something my family (who doesn't watch cartoons) would enjoy? And yes. They would. Me personally, I see it as a fine show. It's not bad. It's not good. It's fine. Fine is good. The bending was off. The characters were none existent. I forgot Katara was in a scene once and then she showed up like Casper and I was like GEEZ. the costumes look cheap to the extent I apologized to m.night for saying his costumes were terrible. They weren't. And his wigs were better. Yep. His wigs were better.

Overall I'd give this adaption a B-. I liked Iroh and Zuko's relationship but was sacrificed for Team Avatar's "Family Dynamic" subplot. However, I find it hypocritical that Sokka can't be sexist but the villains can?! That made no sense and felt like they didn't want a hero to be that heavily problematic. Also, no tease or mention of Toph was "utterly ridiculous" to borrow a phrase. But I never actually seen the M. Night version and don't think I'm ever going to in the future. But great two parter and good essay overall.

🌊 I'm definitely still not interested trying to watch the show, but zuko and iroh would have probably been a slight reason to want to see it! Sigh I concede couldn't spot glimmy these two times! But this was still such a great video and had fun ! (unlike this live action ATLA 😂) Absolutely awesome job on the chibi Yue (Especially during the braids drawing 🤣👏) Oh also I wonder what your father's thoughts would have been on this show 😅(since you mentioned that he liked the other live action in the sub v dub video)
