A lot of people seem to forget a very important key detail: Gertrude fell into Fairyland HEADFIRST. And was not given ANY medical treatment whatsoever and instead was given a map to find a key home. She more than likely suffered from brain damage as well as trauma of being taken away from her parents and home. Plus she's was 6 and didn't have such knowledge of navigating a map in the first place. With the untreated head injury and trauma and Fairyland's passive aggressive toxic positivity and riddles, it's no wonder why Gertrude ended up the way she did.

Darketh Deaddeth was ironically the most reasonable person Gert had met in years. He gave her a difficult but straightforward task and gave her what she asked for when she succeeded. Iactually felt sorry for her when she was asked why exactly she hates Fairyland so much, and she explains it's because your made to feel like your obligated to have fun her, and obligation to do anything, no matter how fun it is, makes it not enjoyable.
@andrewowens44215 ай бұрын
Exactly. It shows that Gert was just in a bad position. She made a mistake, as kids are wont to do. But instead of being given a chance to make up for that mistake, she was pushed to continue on her "journey" the way the people in charge wanted her to. So she kept making mistakes because she wasn't given the chance the fix the first one and just added on the pile. Eventually leading to her many agonizing years in Fairyland. She hated it because they forced her to follow a script and that's not how you have fun. You should be led on a journey but you should still have control as to _how_ you follow that journey.

She got sick of her being in Fairyland. Or heck summon the other kid, but instead of being used to allow Gert to be killed.. Use her as the person to open the door for her. Pretty sure they BOTH could leave if they BOTH hold the key at the same time. Or considering how Happy was super nice, she probably would have chose to stay and give it to gert if asked to. Honeslty, Getrude was a 10 year old child, who was having fun in her room and then got Isekai and imediatly thought she was going to die, only to get injured and was told to go on a Quest to find a Key to return home... I dont think its just her being "abit" dumb but how do you expect a 10 year old to do a whole quest after getting a "near-death experience" even if they have a guide? The poor girl problaby had multiple mental breakdowns over time both from: - Missing her parents - Wanting to go home - Trying to speed up things and failing cause she misunderstood something or it wasnt clear - She at somepoint killed something either on acident or on purpose (either due to stress or anger or both) - Slowy stop caring about it all - The main reason she hates Fairyland: Your expected and obligated to have fun there, wich makes it unfun and just tiresome. It wouldnt suprise me if Happy was given a easier task since: - Gertrude kinda messed up multiple of them, often through murder, shortening the list further; - The Queen and others want her dead, so maybe Happy had a Cheat Sheet of sorts.

So she found herself in a Life that she never experienced or remenbers building.

She kills for the same reason she is trying to leave fairyland at this point; she is angry at everything. This is not the case. In the second volume, when she's back in the real world, she can't keep a single job without being fired. She tries to be a clown and ends up cursing at the children, she tries to be a bus driver but crashes the bus into oncoming traffic, and she tries to do lawn moving and literally gets drunk behind the wheel. Getrude realizes that it's not fairyland's fault for her not being able to find the key, she's just dumb and doesn't care enough to put in the effort into anything, and regularly has fantasies about killing people. Not magical fantasy creatures, actual humans. Getrude was doomed even as a child, with or without Fairyland

On one hand this sounds exactly like the type of comic 12 year old me would draw with stick figures and then show to nobody. I love that sort of twisted Fairytale stories even as a 30YO. On the other, looks like the punchline is always the same "Fairy Land is gory and/or gross and she kills" in progressively more unhinged ways. That doesn't quite work without actual commentary on what's being satirized (see One Punch Man for an example of how to do it well. See Disaster Movie for how to do it horribly horribly wrong)
@ToothedKrux5 ай бұрын
I only read the first few chapters, but it was pretty apparent that this comic does lack a lot of storytelling content. It looks amazing, but it's hard to stay engaged because so little of consequence is actually happening. Kind of a shame, really.
@JoannaSunshineBun5 ай бұрын
@@ToothedKruxand now you know why Gertrude is miserable and hates where she is. The story sucks and nothing of consequence happens in fairy land. Nothing happens, nothing changes, she's there for eternity since she doesn't age and all her actions are meaningless until she gets back to the real world.
@ToothedKrux5 ай бұрын
@@JoannaSunshineBun That doesn't make the story magically better however. Antiheroes feel so great because they react to a situation they empathize with and act in ways that others do not dare doing. They succeed where others don't. With Gertrude however you don't see any kind of progress, she just lumbers around, pretty much aimlessly, no progress to show for. Even for a "monster of the week" format the spectacles seem to be much too shallow to be entertaining, as there is no real struggle visible. Generally the works of Image Comics (the publisher of this comic) do sort of have a reputation of putting flashy graphics before stories, and I feel this is the case here. Seeing as the artist is also the writer, it does make sense. It's hard to write stories AND make art, as each takes a lot to master. A prime example are the Asterix comics, where the quality of stories plummeted after Goscinny died and Uderzo did both art and story.

@ThermiteKitty5 ай бұрын
The story covered in this video is _20 chapters long._ In One Punch Man terms, that's just after Saitama joins the Hero Association and Genos moves into his apartment. Most of the commentary you're thinking of comes much later, the first 4 chapters that hooked most of the fanbase from the start are _literally_ "Saitama is overpowered in a shonen battle manga world, he's bored of it and then he kills a shonen battle manga villain in a gory/gross way" And you know what? It hooked so many people for a reason! That's perfectly fine! The premise broadens out to "a cool shonen manga trope happens and then it gets comedically undercut" and eventually commentary on the nature of heroism and strength, but other series that try to do that from the start with more nuance tend to flop because they don't instantly hook new viewers. What hooks people? Punching a DBZ Piccolo knockoff into chunky salsa. There's no shame in that. So even if you boil the IHF formula down to "Gert is overpowered in a fairytale world, she's bored of it and then she kills fairytale characters in a gory/gross way", surely you can see how that hook can sustain a simple 20 chapter story with excellent art, creative worldbuilding, a few neat twists and a fun mix of comedy and violence. There's plenty to enjoy in each chapter, it's exciting to see what concept's going to be riffed on next and how our main duo's going to deal with the next big headache. The sequel gets more complicated, but even it's just an added 40 chapters for a 60 chapter IHF series total. Murata's OPM is at an ongoing 200+ chapters and is quite bloated with many fights that are just excuses for more elaborate action setpieces outside of ONE's original webcomic concepts. There's no interesting commentary inherent in the year straight of drawing and redrawing Phoenix Man's fight during the MA arc, and there doesn't have to be.

The series biggest issue was always the lack of direction. Hence the first run was the best. The author couldn't figure out what to do with the Queen Gertrude premise, so she lost it at the start of the second run. Second Run was about her trying to find alternative methods to escape and dealing with new characters Duncan and Pervis. Third Run was about Gertrude trying to redeem herself. Neither run was overall that great, and the third run just ended with Gertrude dying. The 4th one was genuinely an improvement. Cloudia gets resurrected and starts massacring everyone in a rampage, forcing the Magic council to bring back Gertrude to stop her, who then uses her power to blackmail them into sending her home. (Thus setting up floundering Adult Gertrude who was the protag when it got revived a decade later). Personally with a full re-write I'd have kept the first run the same, merged 2 and 3 with the Queen Gertrude idea (have it be about her ruling Fairyland and running it into the ground, you can include some characters and elements from the other two, ends with her dying) and then the 4th run. If you still want 4 total runs have the 2nd one be about Queen Gertrude and the 3rd about her life in exile.

Gertrude would 100% fit on Kazuma's team in Konosuba. Think about, she's a girl who's actually older than she looks, she's got yellow on her so they can distinguish she's on Kazuma's team, she has pretty bad luck, and she's a capable, but also kind of a murderhobo and would constantly have to be kept in check my Kazuma and the rest. Also, she keeps Larry because the team needs a mascot of sorts. This also completes the five man band, with Kazuma as the leader, darkness as the heart, megumin as the smart guy, aqua as the lancer, and Gertrude as the big guy. Edit 1: ok, so I would like to say that, from what I remember from reading the comics, Gertrude doesn't kill everything (at least not on purpose) for no reason, and will kill for a reason, even if it's a very small reason, so she would still need to be kept in check, and/or directed to something else. As for why Kazuma would keep her around, the answer is simple; a somewhat stable income, and someone actually somewhat competent besides him. The income part, aside from Kazuma's stuff that gets sold, Gertrude could help gathering monster parts, and then selling them, since she doesn't COMPLETELY destroy the body, unlike megumin. As for the combat part, Gertrude, thanks to Larry and his hat, has MANY weapons, creatures, and tools at her disposal, which she seems to know how to use them all, and is Quick to learn to use weapons, as seen with the axe she took from Bruud the Brutal. She's also capable of growing as a person, as seen nearing the end of the first run, with Larry, and more so in the second, where she's grown up, and full on willing to help a kid get back home (If I do remember correctly, she might have been also planning on going back with the kid, but the point still stands). So I could see her being more like the start of the series Gertrude (as in the part where she kills the moon) with Kazuma and his group, but overtime, she could mellow out and come to gain a closer bond with the rest of the group, maybe even seeing them as a new family, even maybe come to terms that it's likely her parents aren't around anymore, and if she goes back to her world, she'll have no one. Edit 2: I removed the loli part and replaced it with girl

Wouldn't fit the tone. Megumin has a similar problem, she gets into fights, threatens people, and bullies Yunyun, but at least she doesn't kill people ( who aren't bad guys ) They wouldn't keep a literal murderer on the team

The best thing about this story is how Cloudia was such a fucking hater that she’s willing to let herself be killed all because she wants Gertrude to suffer for all eternity, keep in mind, she could have lived happily as the Queen for ages to come but she actively went there just because of sheer hater juice flowing through her veins.

@ejm12255 ай бұрын
If you think about it, this comic is basically a tragedy. A six-year-old girl is taken away to a magical world without warning and was sent off to a magical quest to find the key to door back to her old world without know-how. She probably suffered a lot of trauma, anguish, and misfortune for all these 27 grueling years of finding that damned key, and it all culminates into a slow, grim transformation into the sociopathic, alcoholic, foul-mouthed, ultra-violent Gert we all know and pity for. And even after finally escaping into the real world, she still remained as the maniacal, vulgar ASH TREE she grew up into; she's just now restricted into a realistic environment. She could never be the bloodthirsty slaughterhouse she was once. And yet, what she said in the final page of the final issue of the first volume perfectly sums up what life she rather prefers: "Fuck Fairyland."

The west's isekai genre is usually called the lost child or the kid in fairy land (alice in Wonderland, narnia, peter pan, etc.). Instead of being a power fantasy the genre is usually a coming of age story. The other difference is modern isekai trends are for pure escapism for teens and adults but the lost child genre is a journey and the characters are meant to return after having to grow up internally. This comic is a deconstruction of that genre. It's not a good one imo. It's more of an edgy parody really.
@vvalteria26604 ай бұрын
Do you have any good suggestions?
@Greyinkling2764 ай бұрын
@@vvalteria2660 For western "lost child in fairy land" stories? I gave the classics (Oz, Neverland, Narnia, Wonderland). But a new modern classic is Over The Garden Wall. For a good deconstruction of the genre there's Discworld's Wee Free Men.
@lunyxappocalypse70714 ай бұрын
I disagree that modern isekai is pure escapism, the market has just been flooded with rapid production, so only a few gems come to light.
@Greyinkling2764 ай бұрын
@@lunyxappocalypse7071 Well I'm comparing it to isekai anime and manga from before 2010, which was also more often coming of age stories. It's just the current trend in Japan is escapism settings. It can be reincarnation, video game worlds, full immersion VR games, but they're not a journey there and back again. They are an escape from the real world into another one. Exceptions and subversions are exceptions. The current trend of Isekai is escapism. To say the market is only flooded with exceptions is to ignore what the actual trend is. The "gems" are not like the decades prior. They are usually subversions, or about world building. The characters aren't trying to get back home.
