Mary never said - (paraphrase) this is not possible. Mary always believed God. She said - HOW can this be. She was asking HOW God would work this, not IF He would. It is an ESSENTIAL part of theology & yet I read that there was many theologians consulted on this film. Not sure where they got their training!
@GuadalupePicassoАй бұрын
To further clarify, Mary was asking how God would do this because she was a consecrated virgin.
@livialaurenzano4081Ай бұрын
Yes Mary always believed God . Please see the Douay Rheims Bible-Luke chapter 1 verse 34 : Mary replied “how shall this be done because I know not man?” This is the best translation -more accurate one. “How can this be“ carries with it the implication of doubt. But Mary did not doubt God. “how shall this be “ implies belief and acceptance, but with the curiosity as to the mechanism that God would use. The intricacies of proper and exacting/ literal translation are so very important. Ancient translators by and large did literal, word for word translations of Sacred Scripture. However so many modern translators of Catholic bibles don’t do this and without literal adherence to the original words, meanings or teachings can be drastically changed. I would respectfully suggest you use the Douay Rheims Catholic bible based on the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome who finished his work about 405 A.D. Saint Jerome was a native Greek speaker (the language in which most of the New Testsment books were written)and he spoke Latin and Hebrew, ( the language in which most of the Old Testament books were written) and he had access to ancient 2nd and 3rd century Hebrew and Greek manuscripts that no longer exist and was 300 years closer to the actual events. This would indicate that his would be the most trustworthy translation. I would respectfully suggest you get a copy of the pamphlet “Which Bible Should You Read” byThomas A . Nelson. It gives an excellent historical overview of the subject with examples of problematic passages created by modern translators by comparing them to the Douay Rheimes version. And by the way, it isn’t just the improper translation of the text, but it is also the footnotes in modern translations that exacerbate this problem. God bless and Godspeed!

This is a way of Christ, "While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him. And one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking to speak to thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand towards his disciples, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother." (ASV+ Matthew 12: 46-50) Family of Christ are christians, not nazis. This is the God's word, 1Corinthians 11: 3: "But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." Chist is submissive to God. Ancient greek word "christ" means "anointed/appointed person". Name "Jesus" means "Jehovah is salvation". This is Jesus' prayer and Jehovah's answer, John 12: 28: "Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." The name of Jehovah is glorified and will be glorified! :-) A lot of believers await for the God's Judgment and do hate His witnesses... "So, you're stating that you ain't prostitute, but the faithful wife of anonymous trinity of the Husband? I'm so sorry about that unfortunate misunderstanding, ma'am..." The God sees and remembers everything then there will be the Judgment. Exodus 20: 14: "Thou shalt not commit adultery." Here is a Christ's question, Mathew 15: 3: "But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?" Malachi 2: 1-4: "And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith Jehovah of hosts, then will I send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. Behold, I will rebuke your seed, and will spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your feasts; and ye shall be taken away with it. And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant may be with Levi, saith Jehovah of hosts." (ASV) A women say "the Husband has no name". Another ones say "the Husband has many names". Some of women "love the Husband in all his manifestations" like: neighbour, taxi driver, coworker, and so forth. Some women in a Husband-fearing way call him "H-D"... But, all of those prostitutes say "the Husband is the only". Their prostitution has created another women saying "there is no Husband at all". Then they even talk about "trinity of the Husband" and they are not against "the Son taking the Husband's place". In the same way religious prostitutes try to hide their disgusting fornication with different gods. Furthermore, a correct pronunciation of the Name is unknown now. This is the “loyalty” of traitors! Here is the God's word spoken through Moses, Deuteronomy 11: 16-17: "Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; And then the LORD's wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you." So, the God says there are other gods, but blind leaders of blind lead people into trap. Names of an idols/false gods are well known: Zeus, Rempha/Chiun, Aurora, Baal, Moloch, and many others. "Jesus" means "Jehovah is salvation". This is the name of Christ real christians are hated for. "HalleluJah" means "Praze Jah" (Jehovah). Psalm 83: 18: "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth." (KJV) The problem is Devil runs the world. He is liar and murderer. This is the reason why liars feel so good while righteous people are persecuted. That's why we've got the Gospel about the God's kingdom. Jehovah would put everything in order. He has anointed the king, Jesus Christ. The dead will be resurected and we'll meet our beloved ones again! :-)

Okay, I just gave the “Mary” movie a chance. Here’s what I think… The good: the production value was excellent! The casting was great! This might be the first movie with Mary, that didn’t distract me about the casting of Mary. The actress was perfect for the role. I’m glad that they were respectful with the relationship between Mary and Joseph (they pretty much showed it as a chaste relationship). I liked how Joseph was very heroic in this film. Mary wasn’t a girlboss like I feared they’d make her. Anthony Hopkins as Herod was good fun! The bad: they had no theological consultants on this movie and it showed! Things about Mary that are outright in the Bible were neglected or changed. I won’t list them here out of respect for spoilers, but there’s a lot. I don’t mind creative license for things not found in scripture, but there’s a ton of things that were in scripture and were changed for no reason. They couldn’t even get the chronology of events right… the Presentation in the Temple came after the slaughtering of the infants by Herod in this film, it was supposed to be the other way around. The Angel Gabriel was creepy! I get that we don’t know how angels looked, but was just disappointed with how the Angel was portrayed. There were also scenes of Mary that were “out of character” so to speak from what we know of her as being the humblest of creatures. There was a scene in which she spoke up to one of the Priests in the temple that didn’t really come across as humble, but I suppose that’s quibbling. In summary, the movie is definitely worth a view so you can form your own opinion. It’s fine for its entertainment value… but definitely not a religiously accurate portrayal of the events leading up to Christmas. Also, if they’re gonna make a movie about Mary, you can’t end it with Jesus only being 40 days old… like Mary’s biggest trial was at the foot of the cross. I don’t think you can really make a movie about her without that part of her life.

@ for the narrative of this Netflix film, I don’t think that would have worked, you’ll understand once you see it… but really, they could have done a better job with the look of the Angel… it looked more like a demon honestly.

Very disappointing. Here’s my review: I watched Mary on Netflix and had to turn it off before the ending. I know there is creative license when filming, but this was absolutely unbelievably UNBIBLICAL. There were parts that I could see as possible such as her being given to God as an infant. Also, evil was represented very clearly and, after satan, Herod was the worst. However, the Angel Gabriel was creepy and not at all how angels are described in the bible. Furthermore, Mary and Joseph were depicted in a way that made them less following God's will and more as super heroes. It just made my heart hurt. It's thought provoking but I feel people who do not know Mary as our blessed Mother will not know her any better after watching this. What a waste of talent and creativity!

The guest's comments are very vague and not helpful at all. Having watched the movie with my daughter here are our conclusions: The movie is nicely done, cinematically. If you know absolutely nothing about the Christian faith, you can watch this movie and say it's worth the money you might have paid in a movie theater. That is the good part. Now the bad part, if you are a knowledgeable Christian (Means you actually know your Bible -- the true canon accepted by all branches of Christianity -- not just the ones you pick and choose for your sectarian purposes), and you know actual Christian history, not legends. Then you will be horrified by this movie as a complete Christian history disaster. Top of the list that this movie should be watched and recommended with extreme caution, the story is based on the false, non-canonical work called the Protoevenagelium of James. This work has been condemned by the early Church multiple times. It's a late work, composed some time in the late 100s A.D. And it purports to be written by the brother of the Lord, James. But James (The Brother of the Lord) was martyred between 64-67 A.D. Some near 100+ years earlier. The Earliest reference we have to the book from a Church Father, Origen, in the 250s, condemned the book. The Bishop of Rome (Pope Innocent in 405 Anathematized the Book) and Christian councils condemned the book. The Orthodox Church declared the book apocryphal. That said, for some strange reason, some say it has some "useful" things in it, which makes absolutely no sense. To the point that the repeatedly condemned work has wormed its way into certain church theologies and liturgical parts. Bottom line, the movie is not based on the Apostolic Witness. If you want to let your older kids see it (as I did with my daughter), sit down with them and enjoy the movie but you should be able to point out all the timeline errors, outright fabrications, falsehoods and artistic license run amok. I agree with those who condemn the portrayal of the Angel Gabriel -- he looks extremely creepy and not in line with the Apostolic Witness. The movie essentially butchers the nativity story found in the gospel of Luke and Mathew. There is no Magnificat even alluded to by Mary, no shepherds in the field sung to by the angels, nothing but a hint at the Magi from the East, and there's no Gold, Frankincense and Myhr. Even the scene of the presentation of Our Lord in the temple is butchered in word and sequence. Finally, Joseph is a violent man in this movie, not even close to the "righteous" cautious man described by Luke and Mathew.

It was so painful to watch just because it contradicted the scriptures. For One, Joseph actually intended to divorce Mary... Matt 1:19-21 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.” So then it was an angel of the Lord that explained it all to Joseph. It was also then Joseph who was suppose to give the name Jesus. Next, the Magi. The Bible calls them Magi and that is all we know. It's NOT specified if they were kings, it was NOT specified if they were three and definitely their names were NOT given. So why then add to the text? If only they made it 100% Biblical. I don't get why films can't do that. I mean ok they need to add some fillers but it should not be anything that contradicts the Bible. So Mary had a cousin playmate, ok that is fine.

I understand a certain amount of artistic license. I understand that certain things read better than if they were made visual. But when artistic license totally up- ends the original source I personally have no desire to spend my money or waste my time with it. There have been several British dramatizations of novels and short stories, etc. that used to be shown on PBS (Masterpiece Theater) many years ago and virtually every one of them was extremely entertaining, extremely well done and also virtually identical to the written word. I offer one as an excellent example -the story called “Mother Love”. So my question again is why can’t Hollywood do this?

There would be only one way to make it "as accurate as possible." That is to follow Catholic doctrine, teachings and history. All other perspectives are not guaranteed by the Holy Spirit, but many are man's musings and guesswork about spiritual events. The question is, when will a devout Catholic movie director depict the life of Mary?
@sammygomes7381Ай бұрын
Why not follow the Christian doctrine instead of the Catholic doctrine?

Religious accuracy ≠ historical accuracy. Maybe they intended to avoid the portrait of a "pasteurized" Mary that lacked more human aspects as is understandably recurrent in worshiped iconography. Even when Mary was a way more younger Jewish girl, here she is seen in a more earthly way, with the challenges of the immigrant young mother the Bible talks us about.
@bspks756Ай бұрын
@ I understand that it must be difficult for a non- religious person to imagine or try to perceive the mindset of a deeply religious girl like Mary was, in the times she was living. But though on the outside she may have appeared "earthly", the Fact is, she was anything but. THAT is the mystery that is going on here. The entire Christian philosophy is that fallen man (since the Garden of Eden) was in need of a Savior. God sent Himself in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ. In Catholic Christian theology, Mary's saving was retroactive, so that she was Immaculately conceived, without sin, without a fallen nature -- therefore, distinctly NOT earthly. Every decision she made was pure, selfless and by Design, served to birth a Divine Savior without sin. This entire concept is nearly impossible to perceive by sinful earthly man. One must be Born Again, and have it Revealed to the human heart by the Holy Spirit. "I was Blind, but now I see.." We need a Movie Director who SEES ✝️✝️✝️

I've seen it. It is not at all close to the gospel accounts of the nativity and there is a lot of artistic license taken, almost going to the edge of blasphemy. Some people take issue with how the Archangel Gabriel was depicted, but I though that was ok and the least of it. There were scenes depicting Mary being tempted by the devil and Joseph sword fighting with Herod's soldiers, there was a lot to raise eyebrows at. The sets were visually impressive but I was disappointed they strayed too far from the truth.

By Jewish standards of that time, getting pregnant without a husband is a heinous crime punishable by stoning to death. That is clear historical fact which Biblical scholars will confirm. Nothing at all "irreverential" about that.
@91AlbertusАй бұрын
However St. Mary had a husband at the time of the Annunciation - st. Joseph. So there was nothing scandalous about her being pregnant, and nowhere in the Scriptures it's brought against her or her Child.
@emiltiwaz1022Ай бұрын
@@91Albertus You may wish to read again the Infancy Narrative of Matthew and Luke. In the Lucan version, Mary explicitly told Gabriel that she has no husband (Lk 1: 34). In the Gospel of Matthew an Angel had to appear to Joseph in a dream to convince him to take Mary even though the child in her is not Joseph's. Joseph, in the Matthean narrative, was in fact extremely reluctant to even see Mary now given her pregnancy out of wedlock (Mt 1: 18-20).
@91AlbertusАй бұрын
@@emiltiwaz1022 No, st. Mary says "I know not man" meaning she is a virgin, but she already is married to st. Joseph, the original texts are clear here. We have to know that in ancient Jewish tradition marriage consistet of two steps, after the first the spouses already were legally married and could have legal children, but they didn't yet live together for a period up to a year, during which the husband was preparing the home, and then the second part was when he solemnly introduced his wife to their new home. St. Joseph wanted to quietly divorce st. Mary before he took her to his home (the language used is that of a divorce) meaning that all this happened between this two stages. Some Bible translations are not so accurate here (because we don't have the equivalent of that 2-stage marriage in our languages) although usually they will explain this in the footnotes. There's a good video that explains this in detail called 'Why Protestants Get Christmas Wrong' by the channel 'Shameless Popery Podcast'. Edit: I'll just add that in older translations like the KJV or Douay-Rheims it says more accurately, that the Angel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary when she was "espoused to a man whose name was Joseph". Meaning they were already spouses.
@davidleingang5591Ай бұрын
@@emiltiwaz1022 allow me to clarify a couple of your points. The Catholic New American Bible in Luke 1:34 has Mary’s reply to angel Gabriel as “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” Mary is not saying she doesn’t have a husband since Luke 1:27 says Mary was betrothed to Joseph. Betrothal in Jewish culture was a formal contract between a man and woman to marry. Much more binding than an engagement today. Betrothed couples would not have sexual relations during the betrothal period. So Mary’s questioning response to Gabriel is more like how can I be pregnant when I haven’t had sex with Joseph? Gabriel then explains in Luke 1:35 the Holy Spirit’s role in the conception of Jesus. Now regarding Math 1:18-20. Infidelity during betrothal was considered adultery. Penalty for adultery was death by stoning (see Dt 22:21-23). Per the Mosaic Law Joseph could have had Mary stoned. But since Joseph was a righteous man (Math 1:19) he decided to divorce Mary quietly to avoid shame etc. This is when an angel appears in his dream and tells him “…do not to be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.” Essentially Mary is pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. And note the angel called Mary his “wife.” Joseph followed the angel’s command and took Mary into his home. And we all know the rest of the story.

You can’t be serious.!!!!!!You don’t have to agree with Catholic teaching, but at least get the facts straight. And to do this, you must go to the proper source --to Catholic publications --not to Jews or Muslims or other protestants. Once again you don’t have to believe it or agree with it, but this is the way you get your facts straight. This is and has been clearly explained by the Catholic Church. The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary herself --that she was conceived without the stain of original sin -the sin of Adam, to be a worthy dwelling place for our Lord and Savior; and the angel comes to her and says “Hail FULL of grace. The Lord is with thee.”. This is completely different from and does NOT refer to the virgin birth. I would encourage you to research the subject, with the following sources as a good start- Catechism of the Council of Trent, The Catechism Explained by Francis Spirago and The Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Ludwig Ott. Godspeed.
