So I got two major questions for this series. So, if they wanted to write Wesker as this completely different character, one who doesn't look, act, or sound like Wesker, why did they change Albert Wesker? There were no less than 13 canonical Weskers in Project W, and we only ever saw Alex and Albert: they could have done whatever they wanted with any one of those other Weskers, done a wholly contained side-story that compliments the story in the games, and then have Albert Wesker show up in the final episode as like a cliffhanger or something. They could have wholly justified their use of original characters, had their Wesker AND the canonical Wesker, and actually given some interesting behind-the-scenes info about how Umbrella worked if they actually gave a shit. Why do they always go the "global apocalypse" scenario for adaptations of Resident Evil? The global zombie apocalypse is a horse that was ridden to death, zombified, and then ridden to death again. None of the games ever dealt with a global apocalypse, and that was one of the biggest things that made them both scary and interesting: it was scary that this shit was just... happening behind closed doors and under the streets while most people didn't even know, and it was interesting because it always gave the characters a reason to move forward. Also, true story: Alice was created for the Resident Evil movies for no reason other than to make a wish fulfillment character for Milla Jovovich because Paul W.S. Anderson wanted to get in her pants. I'm actually being serious.

The most baffling thing about the Netflix adaptation is that they had every resource available to them to get this right. They made Resident Evil as a TV show so they could have faithfully adapted the first and second game over multiple episodes for the first season. The budget for the show seemed to be pretty good as the visual effects work / cinematography / set design seemed to rival anything you can see in the theaters at the moment. They also had a massive platform to gain a large audience. It is just a bad case of hubris where the writers think they can do better. I also watched every episode. According to an interview with a VFX coordinator on First Aid Spray Podcast, the season 2 plot was going to have game characters, like Chris Redfield, and would be more faithful to the games in general, whilst killing off oc characters from the first season....which raises question of why they just didn't start with the Season 2 scripts for Season 1.

Because favors were owed of the creators of season 1. Bet.

@@gaiasguardian205 I mean, it was still the same people on both seasons at that point. It just seems their plan was "Introduce controversial oc characters in season 1, kill them off in season 2 and replace them with canon characters" Now that's not necessarily unheard of, there's a precedent for an Alpha Team or decoy protagonist that gets killed and replaced with the Beta Team. So that seems what the showrunners/writers wanted to do, and Netflix is typically hands off on production oversight. It's just, when one does that trick, it's supposed to be for a portion of an episode, maybe two episodes at best. Not an entire season. Because the people who didn't like the decoy protagonist won't want to wade through the first season for the real protagonist, and the people who did like the decoy protagonist won't be happy they were killed off. One of the more baffling parts to me was their motivation for these OCs as the main protagonist/antagonist. Usually when they do something like this it's because they wanted women for the main characters, but Resident Evil is a relatively rare example of a franchise that has featured strong female characters from the very beginning. The very first game featured a woman as one of the two playable characters, as did most of the others. Characters like Claire, Jill, Ada, Rebecca, Sheva, etc. They had some solid lady villains as well. So what was their motivation? Why use OCs? Why make their own, completely bullshit plot? I really, really don't understand.
@ffordegroupie49312 жыл бұрын
they can't even used diversity as an excuse bc two of those ladies are Asian and one is black. I think the new OCs are self-inserts for the writers, bc those strong ladies you mention aren't selfish, stupid, unlikable people. They are all cool and likable in their own ways and usually badass, so they're unrelatable to modern Hollywood writers.

Like dude you know any blood will draw the zombies cover the fuck up that's so basic. And she nearly dies from it and I'm half hoping she DOES because she sucks. Honestly, the ONLY saving grace this entire dumpster fire had was Lance and the whole "clone" twist. The guy is a brilliant actor and we got four of him, even if only for a short while, all with completely different personalities and ALL acted well, AND one was pretty close to being how Wesker SHOULD be, something none of the movies/series have successfully done yet? If the Wesker clones had been the main protags, we potentially could've had a good series. Instead, we got.... *urgh* Jade.

I genuinely love the writing of the original Resident Evil video games. The reason is because the characters are endearing. You want the best for them, no matter how B-movie the circumstances may be. That’s the ultimate secret to their success.
@KOTEBANAROT2 жыл бұрын
Omg i had the same exact sentiment after watching the first two RE movies! My biggest problem w those was that the characters are completely unlikeable and seem to genuinely hate each other. Even game characters like Jill are written to be super aggressive and foul mouthed. Meanwhile, re1 with all that horrible dialogue and VA, still had characters caring about and looking after each other and i really cared about their safety in the end.

It’s seems Hollywood has this hideous trend where they take massively successful gaming franchises and insist that they can write these compelling stories better than they were…only to shoot themselves in the foot. The same issue exists with the Halo series where they straight up named it Halo like they did with Resident Evil. The writing and the characters are all complete and served on a silver platter for the show runners. They just cannot leave it alone. Hollywood just has to prove that they, and only they can write a successful script… the success is already built in, they just need to adapt it for the screen. Otherwise, make it clear that it’s a spinoff or an alternate timeline. -I like this kind of content but in your style of criticism. Keep it up.

It's not that they think they can do a better job writing. They think no one will come and watch the new thing if it has the same plot. It's so silly. Comic book fans and book fans come to watch live action remakes with the same plot all the time.

Supposedly back in the day when the first movie was being worked out, Capcom themselves told the filmmakers they could not do a 1 to 1 story. Capcom did not want the movie to simply be the video game filmed, they wanted something new that used the plot points from the game(s) but was different enough that fans wouldn't know what to expect. Capcom also felt that if the movie followed the game story exactly, it would hurt game sales since people would just watch the movie. I believe that is why, at least with the Milla Jovovich movies, it forgoes most of the source material in favor of original storylines using characters, monsters, and plot beats from the games.

I don't understand why they made Jade wholly unlikeable and then make her pivotal for everything. She's a mini john wick, shes better than the head scientist, shes the most important person to everyone. She's supposed to be smart while actively showing us how she makes all the worst tactical, moral and scientific decisions. She's totally unrelatable, unlikeable and not resident evil. Also as someone who worked in security systems, the umbrella break in by 2 little girls is just entirely too much of a stretch. None of the tech or procedures for entry work like that

Bert's Olive Garden scene (and the clone scenes in general) were great, but I'd argue that the highlight of the entire series was Baxter's Hardboiled-style long take in the prison. Genuinely entertaining and fabulously choreographed and shot. The "real Wesker" scene, on the other hand, was kind of a letdown, because I don't think it was well choreographed or shot, and it came off as kind of goofy. I think his haircut wasn't doing him any favors there either. He looked more like a Blade cosplayer than anything.

I feel like the key to an RE show is one, working with the already existing ensemble of characters rather than adding in new ones, two, playing into the horror aspects rather than the action (most of the time), and three, actually allowing it to be campy rather than what these shows and movies have tried, which is a weirdass combo of seriousness and cheese that doesn't capture the charming aspects of the actual series. I genuinely think the sonic movies have done a surprisingly good job at finding a similar balance, and that RE would benefit from someone who (a) wants to pay real homage to the actual cast and (b) isn't afraid to embrace RE's campy form of story telling. Was talking to my friend and mentioned that Riverdale, despite being a god awful disaster show (we forced ourselves to watch, and despite being one of the most chaotically bad things ever it's so self aware that it's often absurdly fun to watch), sometimes feels like a better representation/adaptation of RE than RE's official films do. I'd love to see a team like that be given the series to play with, because with RE I think you have to either commit to being a small, focused horror story, or a big, stupid crazy fest, and either way you have to embrace the camp of the genre and be willing to be out there with it.
