Netflix SeaSpiracy - Scuba Instructor Reaction, Review & Commentary (Condensed Version)

This is the condensed versions for the squirrels out there, or in case someone throws a frisbee ;)

I see there have been many videos posted on this topic, including some debunking or challenging the accuracy of various stats used in the documentary. I'd to have folks commenting on any facet of this Netflix documentary, or my review/commentary, as they wish.

There are government theory called iron triangles and capture by Wildavski. I think I spelled his name correctly. The theory is the agency that regulates certain industry gets captured and turns a blind eye to what is going on due to they become intertwined

Glad you mentioned how plastic straws are a..... red herring. I live way inland and never see plastic straws, mostly cellophane or other sheet plastic and plastic bottles

I didn't know that, David. Good cause, for sure. I was amazed at the time I found my first and only net here in Japan. It might have been 1/2 the size of a football pitch...

So you would think that fish farming would be a great alternative to fishing

There’s some interesting videos on YT about fish farming of Panga/Basa and Norwegian Salmon. There’s a lot of issues with interbreeding and also disease. Worth reviewing.

@@DiscoveryDiversTokyoFish farming is a “megabucks industry”. Big industry has money first at heart and environmental protection right there at the bottom. In theory, an awesome concept when managed and done in an environmentally safe manner. First some interesting facts: 1. Fish farming, or aquaculture, supplies about two-thirds of all salmon that land on dinner plates today. 2. In nature, the fish hatch and spend their first year or so in freshwater before moving seaward to feed and grow. Once mature, they return to rivers and swim upstream to spawn. Farmed fish are hatched in freshwater tanks from stock (often obtained in the wild) before being moved to large cages or nets in the ocean to fatten up before being harvested. 3. Some 2.3 million tonnes of the most popular type, Atlantic salmon or "Salmo salar", are farmed every year-about 1.2 million tonnes by Norway, which exports 95 percent of its production. That tonnage doubled between 2005 and 2014, even as national and global efforts to limit the environmental impact have scaled up. 4. Salmon farms spread parasites such as sea lice, while pesticides threaten other ocean creatures and plants. Antibiotics, used to keep disease at bay, leach into the surrounding environment. This boosts the risk of drug resistance and can give rise to so-called super-bacteria. 5. Stocks of wild fish harvested to feed salmon risk being depleted, and salmon excretions can smother life on the seafloor. 6. The proximity of fish farms to “wild fish: and natural spawning grounds - 21 of the 34 wild salmon populations investigated in Norway in 2011 indicated a moderate-to-high risk for genetic introgression from farmed escaped salmon. And yes, they do escape!
