PEPSIMAX2022 I don't think that's true, according to Mulaney. On the Fallon show he said when Jake got to set he asked him how he wanted the part to be played and John told him his first choice was Harry Belafonte in 1961(obviously impossible), so Jake said do you want me to have a Caribbean accent? John said no that's kinda problematic, so Jake went ok what if I go with a European guy trying to sound like he's from the Caribbean? John said genius and this was the result

@@squattingheads It’s not very common because it’s not super practical or efficient with the way film sets normally run. Generally actors are expected to spend entire 12 hour days on the same scene doing it over over and and over again because on top of just doing it until it feels right, you’re also setting up the same scene to be shot from different angles. If you’re singing live, that’s a lot of strain on your voice to do it that many times (and even more so if there’s a dance routine involved that you also have to do repeatedly). It’s also a lot of extra work for editors and sound mixers to take all of those takes and blend singing audio from them to make it all match and hide the illusion that different pieces of it were recorded at different times (which is not an easy task to do well). Working to a pre-recorded track also gives the lighting and camera team more freedom because they don’t have to worry about where the mics need to go. This piece is very much an exception to the rule because everything plays out in static single shots without any complicated lighting or choreography and there are little breaks built into the music and the scene so he doesn’t have to give off the impression that he’s been singing the entire time. It also means he was likely not spending more than 2 or 3 takes on each 30 second part of the song so it all sounds much cleaner and more cohesive live. Live singing for film can be done well, but is a very high risk, high reward style situation because it introduces a lot of technical complication to a process that’s already very technically complicated.

I’ve never been able to look at Jake G the same after Nocturnal Animals. “Didn’t he die?!!! Oh right. Just a nightmare of a movie!” NA really is a magnificent film.

Jake Gyllenhaal turns in the comic performance of a lifetime as my new favorite character on the planet, Mr. Music, and I'm just so glad we humans must have been good enough to deserve such delight in our lives.
