Almost everyone today who knows even a basic thing about acting agrees that Phoenix was just simply better and gave not only the best performance of 2012 but also arguably the best performance of the entire decade. @owengraziano72883 ай бұрын
I think my favorite part of this scene (as someone with divorced parents) is the self-centeredness of everything. They’re arguing and gaslighting each other and blaming one another for their own insecurities and failures in life, but they’re not really thinking about their son OR each other. I’m not condemning them for that, but it’s just such a raw, honest, and real depiction of two flawed people taking their flaws out on each other. I still vividly remember overhearing my father tell my mother than he would rather be with my best friend’s mother than with her in the middle of a heated argument. Another time they both trashed the house and after my mom stormed out my dad asked my siblings and I to help him clean up a mess that we had no part in making. I’ve forgiven both of them for a lot of that stuff but it just goes to show that even adults sometimes behave like children, especially when they’re so caught up in their own drama that they ignore the well-being of the people around them, and at the end of the day even our parents are incredibly flawed, imperfect people.

Adam breaking down after realizing what he said is so raw and real, it makes me feel like he's actually in the situation. All the pent up rage he lets out before realizing it and finally letting it go and letting his defenses down and just crying is so raw.

They just verbally and emotionally abused the sh- out of each other then turn around to say I love you? My jaw is on the floor. This is what I never wanted or want in my life. Ever. I would run 🏃♀️ like idk what is going on (brain shuts down with extreme emotions) but, you’re not making sense to me where my default button becomes oo ok, yes, no, mhmm and I become a mute. When my family went through things like this I did the same as a kid like yeah headphones on I’m going to my bedroom idk how to process you.

It’s a terrible thing, but once those words get out, whoever is in earshot can’t unhear them. Adam’s character looked and sounded like he wished he could have rewound time to change all those horrible things. I mean, I’m not fond of my ex-wife, but you’d have to be a psychopath to speak that way to anyone without feeling terrible immediately afterward like Adam’s character did. It took me this long to realize just how good Johansson is. I knew Driver was good all along.

I like how this argument confirms the problems in their relationship. He does reframe things so that she sees things his way i.e. "you shouldn't be upset I f*ed her, you should be upset I had a laugh with her", instead of acknowledging and validating her feelings he insists on implanting his point of view. On the other hand, she complains about how she changed for him to fit his needs (which she did), but she doesn't see how much he changed for her. Great writing.

They're both deeply flawed people. Both are selfish, both are petty and both are pretty much unlikable, but that's why they are believable.

3:05 His little voice crack is just astounding to me. It's something that always happen when one gets too emotional, it doesn't even feel like acting. I don't even know how anyone can reach that level of acting, that level of total immersion in the scene and in the character. Both of them are fantastic, but Adam was out of this world in this movie.

His voice crack, and the sound of his delivery on the word "die". I feel like it's a mix of rage but also the very very end of the word sounds like it's suddenly being taken back because deep down he knows he doesn't mean it, but his anger is pouring out of him and he's let it build to using those words. This scene breaks me every time. 💔
