I love how they framed this scene, especially the first half. They're directly facing each other but the toilet partition provides a divide that lets them both express their emotions perfectly: Steve's rising sincerity and Robin's crestfallen despair. It was so bold and unexpected to *NOT* have them end up together (what a swerve) but geez do I love how it developed both of their character's even more.

@@bigboulder I don't think this was any kind of gut punch for Steve. His crush is unrequited, sure, but he obtains a best friend which is in many ways what he needed as a character. It also directly shows character growth compared to how he was dealing with rejection in the first season. I would expect him to fully transition into a father/big brother figure in the fourth season. I suspect there might be a romantic subplot for him as well

Her laughter to his jokes felt to me, on top of him being funny, like a catharsis for her, like she was so relieved she was accepted and they could still be besties, and possibly even relief beyond just Steve, as he may well be the first person in her life who knows. So the moment is doubly cathartic because for the first time in her life, she's unburdened from this very personal secret that probably made her feel afraid and lonely and self conscious. This scene is everything, and to me, the best scene of the season, and a definite contender for best of the entire series. I'm so excited for Maya Hawke. Media when male and female are hinting to romantic interest: haha no they're platonic, in fact the woman is gay and the guy is a soy drinking beta male so he continues his friendship with her Media when male and male have a platonic friendship: they are GAY and will express it in a GAY shy timid way. And then we will introduce homophobic characters that end up becoming GAY and joining a monkeypox orgy with the two GAY men Tldr; Hollywood sexualizes male platonic friendships and platonizes male-female relations.

To me the best part isn’t even that she came out and he’s cool with it. It’s that he poured his heart out to her, basically confessing his love, and then she revealed that not only does she not feel that way about him; she never will - never CAN, even - and he not only accepts it; he immediately starts joking with her like he didn’t just get his heart stomped on (again).

Robin's emotions are joyfully explored in this scene, but it's worth saying that this is also a turning point for Steve. I think he really shows his maturity in this moment. Instead of being distraught by Robin's rejection, he digests it and lets it wash right over him. Their friendship outweighs any fleeting romantic disappointment. He embraces it for what it is, accepting and adapting like an emotionally intelligent adult. It's like he's really, finally left high school behind. Being chased by psychic monsters and secret agents surely gives you perspective on what's important in life.
@Eris_Norregard

Preach! And what makes it even better is that the reason why he forced himself to get over the rejection so fast is because he could see in how much distress she was - scared that only he will stop being friends with her, but also that he could go into some sort of homophobic freakout and start insulting her, maybe even attack her, or that he could tell everyone and turn her into a total social outcast for the whole Hawkins. Sad as it is, this is a small american town in the 80's after all.

@@svenr.3803 I think it's a little bit of both. On the one hand, Steve has come such a long way from the arrogant, judgemental d-bag he was in season 1, so it is totally in character that he would be so accepting of Robin regardless of her sexuality or the fact that she didn't reciprocate his romantic feelings for her. On the other hand, he probably understands on some level that coming out to someone (especially back then in middle America) is / was a pretty big deal, and ripping on her choice of crush is his way of showing that nothing has changed between them. Without explicitly saying so Steve is showing Robin that he accepts and supports her, because that's what friends do.

I remember in season one, the time where he was at first to be thought of the worst character, he insulted Jonathan by saying he mistook him for a queer. Now he completely accepts his best friend as gay. Goddamn this is another reason to love Steve’s character development

You're not wrong though I think it's the best type of letdown. It's one thing for a crush to say they just aren't into men but it hits harder when they are into men but not into YOU. That being said it's still a beautiful scene and Itotally agree with your premise.
@MelissaSz89
@MelissaSz89 2 жыл бұрын
He was like that with Nancy too in a way, when he fully realized and accepted that she doesn't love him anymore. That little scene in s2 after Nancy and Jonathan slept together during their trip and when they met up with Steve again, he knew that things had changed. And instead of making Nancy feel bad about her kinda cheating on him (they hadn't officially broken up) he reassures her that "it's okay". And he looks and sounds like he absolutely means it. I respect that a lot about him, that he takes rejection in such an accepting way, even though it must hurt him, but he still cares about this person (Nancy and Robin) so much and does everything to make them not feel bad about it. I just really love Steve.

Yeah not just not being homophobic but also not having that toxic attitude after being rejected a lot of women are scared of. But I get it he wasn't interested in her until they were friends, he didn't go in to that relationship with that agenda of becoming her boyfriend and getting "friend zoned."

The way Robin cares about having to reject Steve romantically, the way Steve reacts when he is rejected but quickly realises Robin is vulnerable and and puts her at ease with a joke about her crush...this whole scene is prime. Two people becoming genuine best friends once they fully understood one another. Also, Steve's heart wasn't broken, it was not love, love is deeper and takes longer than a summer in an ice cream place. Steve really liked her and was romantically rejected. It can still hurt but if you've emotional intelligence you can process that pretty quickly. Steve processed that he wasn't rejected as a person, as a friend, just as a romantic partner. It's that emotional intelligence that allowed Steve to instantly realise the person he cares about is isolated and vulnerable by her admission to him and quickly put her at ease. She was also scared of losing him as a friend. The way the chords of the music slowly builds again the second he jokes about Tammy mirrors Robin's emotional state as it too slowly builds up again once she realises Steve accepted her for who she is. It's such a powerful scene.

Stranger Things is really good at breaking stereotypes and that's one of the reasons I like it. Like back in season 1 I thought Hopper was going to be one of those adults who doesn't listen to the kids at all and thinks they are just making up all the stuff so that the kids have no choice but to solve the mystery by themselves. Instead Hopper became one of the main characters who also tries his hardest to solve the mystery and that was definitely a good thing.

You can see how much Steve was taken aback by this. He really had to process the prejudice he’s grown up in, conflicting with the person he’d grown to know and care for, and when he finally settled on it, he turned it into a joke that showed he not only accepted her, but still wanted to be besties. This is one of the greatest coming out scenes in TV and I will not take arguments

Totally, the moment where Robin huddles into herself because she knows that Steve deserves to know the truth, but this being the mid 1980's, she's nervous as to what his reaction will be, and that he won't want to be associated with her anymore. Maya's acting really sells this scene!❤😀

@jonathanguito1168
@jonathanguito1168 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I can't think of any other single scene from any other Netflix original that instantly won me over this hard, and that's saying something. It's the perfect confluence of expert cinematography and blocking, character development, relationship development, dialogue, score, acting and pacing, not to mention being perfectly adept social commentary and progressive in its normalcy and rawness. It's essentially a three act short condensed into six minutes (and yet, rich and generous in its length in the context of a television episode, especially for a show like Stranger Things). Plus it's the moment people go from liking Robin to loving Maya Hawke, because at least in this show, this is her shining moment and she knocks it out of the park. Personally, I'd have loved for her to get an Emmy nod out of this, because it's a masterclass of understatement and expressionism. Everything about this is a masterclass. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if professors showcase this in television writing classes.
