this movie took the quirky, wacky version of the original movie and made her truly psychotic and a ton of fun! While I don't think Emma's portrayal is as terrifying as Pam Ferris', I think it still works in its own way. Her version puts more of an emphasis on Trunchbull basically being an insecure coward who hides behind abusive and controlling behavior. It actually highlights the irony from the stage version of how she calls Miss Honey pathetic for the whole show yet she is truly the pathetic one - while Jenny is strong enough to stand up to her abuser to defend her students, Agatha by comparison is actually weak and chooses to be cruel to children because they are easy targets. Emma's Trunchbull is a great (albeit exaggerated) representation of what bullies are often actually like, insecure people who wear cruelty as a mask to make themselves feel more powerful than they truly are
@lynnmcghee94592 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Even in this song she says she doesn’t need happiness or self esteem as long as she follows the rules. Honestly let’s be real Agatha probably had no friends or people who loved her because of her nature. The ONLY time where she got to feel that validation is when she won the hammer throw. To her it must have been such a rush that in that moment so many people loved her simply for being a champion. But now nobody really knows her anymore. She can’t feel that validation anymore. However it’s easy to obtain self validation and be a champion when you competition is school children
@fd32 жыл бұрын
I actually thought this Trunchbull was really more disturbing and terrifying than the 1990’s film.
@lynnmcghee94592 жыл бұрын
@@fd3 Mhm it really showed her own deranged way of thinking. Like she literally envisioned a life with her sister’s husband where he magically made origami for her with horses….the same man she killed and abused his daughter…after aiding her sister’s death and then open’s a military camp she calls a school
@apersonwhomayormaynotexist98682 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree with this. This version is much more courageous than any other version of the character we've ever seen, and it kinda messes up the climax and themes of the show. In the finale, the entire point of the chalk writing is that matilda is able to defeat her with her mind, and her powers only serve to enable that. This suits the theme so well because the point of the musical/book/movie is that you can stand up to bullies and stop them without needing to be strong physically. Trunchbull in every other version of the story is like you describe Emma's portrayal, so terrified of the ghost of magnus that she runs away from just the chalk writing, and this serves the theme well. matilda didn't defeat the trunchbull by overpowering her with her magic powers, she defeated her with all the information she gathered over the show. But in this movie, Agatha isn't deterred by the chalk writing, she actually stands her ground, the bravest feat we've ever seen of her (other than apparently killing magnus, which didn't happen onscreen anyways). It definitely shows how she's much braver than the other iterations, and is more than just a bully who makes empty promises, she shows that she can truly back them up. It takes a lot of force on Matilda's part, superpowers, throwing her out of the building, etc to finally defeat her, which really messes up the theme trying to be conveyed by saying "oh you actually just need superpowers and to be super strong to defeat bullies" which is a bad message. Anyways, those are my thoughts, but I just think you may be looking at her wrong. She's more courageous than the version from the stage adaptation, and pretty much every other version.

I was liking the movie fine up to this point but when I heard the kids sing the sweet patriotic tune through a garbled 1984-style speaker I was sold

You should watch original then. Emma did great job but Pam Ferris is the best.

I have a theory, bear with me: Agatha Trunchbull did *NOT* win the hammer throwing competition. Hear me out... 1:14 notice how after asking "Did I let myself go?" she furiously, almost agonizingly says "No" several times, almost as though she's reliving a traumatic experience. What if that traumatic experience was her falling short, despite her best effort and doing everything perfectly in her eyes? And what if because of this trauma, she forever demands perfection from her students and those around her, just to show how no matter their perfection, they can still fail, which she mocks them for? (Notice how whenever anybody does anything to her liking in the movie, she'll still find a way to criticize them) "But what about the trophies? Her abilities to throw children? What about all the "proof" that she did win?" All things that can easily be faked. Anybody can get a trophy with their name on it if they pay for it. And nobody ever said she wasn't a good hammer thrower, I just speculate personally that she failed that day and has been living in an almost alternate reality ever since, pretending she did succeed.

Also in school song they say " and even if you put in heaps of effort you're just wasting energy " so possibly there was a student who worked their butt off trying to win her approval but got nothing. Said student became so burnt out they possibly lost their minds.

Agatha trunchbull or Mrs trunchbull, has won all the hammer throwing awards, proven by She can throw Amanda trip very well, and maybe the trophy he was holding was his first trophy, maybe the scene of Mrs Trunchbull playing hammer throw in the field was her last hammer throwing competition, But Mrs. Trunchbull was off guard and accidentally threw the hammer so she lost and didn't get the trophy, and because of that she was badly traumatize, Mrs Trunchbull has severe trauma because it is the first time in her life she has failed to win a trophy,And why is Mrs Trunchbull the principal of the school doesn't she hate children, Because by becoming the principal she could easily vent her trauma on the children, Mrs. Trunchbull hates children, maybe because they are very noisy and mischievous, So that she would exterminate all the children of the world.

@@Callimo That she did. Once again, my theory isn't saying that she's not a great hammer thrower, simply that that day she claimed she won, she didn't.

@@Bigmom9753 I'm not the most familiar with Matilda, so correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe it wasn't that she was caught off guard, she actually may have done everything perfectly, but she was just not as athletic as when she was young, and fell short of her past record.

Pretty amazing she was able to win a trophy for a championship that didn't exist until 1991 all the way back in 1959.

If i were principal in any school, I would also force the children to learn a highly complicated choreography of a catchy song to play whenever I'm bored
