Portable solar panels and inverter were not an emergency option?
@waveman15007 жыл бұрын
That would take several days to recharge. The battery is 37kWh. A solar panel which would fit in the back of the car would produce approximately 250W. Given a generous 10 hours of maximum output per day, that's 2.5kWh of energy per day. Even assuming 100% charger efficiency, it would take approximately 15 days to recharge. If you fully covered the roof of the car in solar panels, you might be able to get 1kW out of it, which would still take you 37 hours of sunlight to recharge.
@ahaveland7 жыл бұрын
I wondered about that too - if I were to do this trip, I'd carry at least 2kW of portable panels like the ones I made and show on my channel, only 10kg per kW. That way at least you could spend a day or two charging in the middle of nowhere and have some means of escape!

I've considered trying to figure out how to do an electric conversion on the car we have that's no longer registered. I assume it would be difficult and expensive, and I have no idea what kind of mechanical condition it's in. (for a conversion, the drivetrain doesn't matter, but stuff like the suspension and the underframe is still critically important to safety.) Still, it wouldn't exactly be efficient. Besides, I think a beat up 1993 Holden Commodore station wagon that happens to be electric would confuse people quite badly. XD Not that it would be the first time. After all there is a rather notorious electric drag racing car embarrassing petrolheads for quite a few years now. It's converted from a 1970's era Datsun 1200... Electric conversions are great for messing with people. XD Sure, you could show up in a flashy, shiny Tesla model S and wow people with high end luxury electric stuff.... Or you could show up in a 30 year old car that looks like a piece of junk and confuse the living daylights out of everyone with all it's makeshift electric conversion nonsense. XD

Level 1 or level 2 or level 3, CHAdeMO or CSS, DC Fast charge or Tesla supercharge versus diesel or bio diesel, ULP or 95 or 98 petrol or lpg or cng. There are competing standards everywhere in our life: Mac/Windows/Linux; Wine/Beer/Spirits; LGBT/GLBT/BLT/smashed avo... whatever. Next you'll be complaining that worse than too much choice you have no choice. With choice comes market determination of best. Maybe there will never be a clear winner in the CHAdeMO versus CSS standards but it doesn't much matter as driving a PV powered EV is my antidote to the Exxon-SA-ISIS axis of oil..

so he says that the car has the gearbox in it still, but he always drives in 2nd. Two questions here: if he is going to drive in second all the time, why did he not take out the gears and save weight?, and since he didn't, why not use a longer gear?

Wouldn't it be really inefficient if it's stuck on 2nd gear?
@MrGoogle877 жыл бұрын
Normal electric cars, including the tesla P100D don't use gears. They all have a fixed ratio, same as this car in 2nd gear.
@Knyght3737 жыл бұрын
Electric motors don't need gearboxes, it doesn't matter what "gear" the car is in as the gearbox is (presumably) completely disconnected from the system - it just hasn't been taken out of the car.
@JehanKateli7 жыл бұрын
But 2nd gear is a very low ratio, which would mean it needs more RPMs to reach a certain speed.
@Knyght3737 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure you read the comment. The gearbox is disconnected. There are no gears. Electric cars do not need them as they provide high torque even at low RPM.

Wiebbe Wakker is one hell of a name, he must have all the jokes and banter to go along with that =P He was stuck a lot of places for 6 - 12 hours, with hydrogen it wouldn't have been as long... if the dick heads got on with it and sorted out the infrastructure tidy, on renewables like with most of California, or use a more efficient electric car. Good episode, the camera man did a pretty good job at this fair play. Maybe if one of the two regulars are not able to do the discussion thing, he could take their place with that too. Oh yeah and that box in the boot that's locked for warranty reasons, there could be anything in there, bones, drugs, bombs hahaha, only messing.
@indianasquatchunters7 жыл бұрын
Johny40Se7en The long rest was due to him using a regular plug no a high power plug like ones people normally charge at. Hydrogen would be even less available in the the places he was traveling most of the industrialized world has electricity. Electric infrastructure is much cheaper and available than hydrogen.
