NETHERLANDS: Vlissingen city - Zeeland

Vlissingen is a city (and municipality) in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands, that has been an important harbour for centuries. In the 17th century Vlissingen was a main harbour for ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It is also known as the birthplace of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
The windmill 'Oranjemolen' on the Oranjedijk (dike) is a flour mill and former peel mill. It is the closest windmill to the sea in the Netherlands.
The Casemates of Vlissingen are from 1811 and lie on the border of land and water. The casemates are a military structure that are used for defense purposes against enemy fire.

The Arsenal is a pirate museum and maritime attraction, mainly for kids. It includes a Pirate Park and a Sea Aquarium with sharks and rays. From the 65 meter high lookout tower there is a view of Vlissingen and the Westerschelde. arsenaal.com/

For generations my family lived and died in the little neighborhood under the Oranjedijk (dike) and windmill . We still live here , sadly mass tourism is destroing our community . Germans are buying up our houses as rental property , i'm the last generation who wil be living here. Breaks our hearts to say but we are the last family to live there still. used to be several fishing families and dockworkers families . It hase become a place for making money not for living.
