Title music from the game Netherworld. Unique, fantastic music by the Finnish maestro Jori Olkkonen. Jori created music to a few Finnish made computer games in the 1980s and he was/is also a demoscene musician known as Yip of Pure-Byte. Pure-Byte was the first Finnish internationally known Commodore 64 demogroup.
The song itself runs on Jori Olkkonen's custom coded music routine and it is truly excellent example of using sampled sounds on C64 hardware. Very CPU intensive too.

Released 1988

C64 music by: Jori Olkkonen
You are trapped in Netherworld. With your space ship you have to make your way through different levels with a hostile environment. Under a time limit you have to collect diamonds to get to the next level. The game is filled with dragons, moving mines, acid spitting creatures and lots more. Your space ship is able to shoot, furthermore you can collect several power ups, such as sand glasses to ease the time limit, shield restore or items that give you invulnerability.

My thought that is that video game music is truly art unto itself. The chipset in the C64 had some muscle that few think about. Kind of how the GBA music chip had a slap-ton of hidden power too.

In this case though it's using audio samples, not the synthesizer. So the experience is along the lines of what you got with a SNES video game (which supports 16 audio samples at the same time while this Amiga game plays 4 at a time).

Just fyi, this is the 1:1 original PAL speed version of the song. As it is meant to play :) Netherworld is one of the early masterpieces of Finnish commercially released games and the game is displayed in the Finnish Museum of Games as one of the cornerstones of the whole Finnish industry. www.vapriikki.fi/en/pelimuseo/ The song itself runs on Jori Olkkonen's own custom coded music routine and it is truly excellent example of using sampled sounds on C64 hardware. Very CPU intensive too, so no chance of running it during gameplay. Also, see below the composer's (Petrik) comment:
@petriksalovaara2805
@petriksalovaara2805 2 жыл бұрын
The music routine was coded exclusively for Netherworld, and has not been used in any other release. It started out as an experiment - I wanted to find out if it was possible to play more than 1 sample simultaneously. It was. Netherworld has 4 (drums + bass + 2 guitars). I played + recorded the distorted guitar samples myself, and snatched the bass and drums from somewhere (don't remember the source).

Most game composers do, just that tech is good enough so they don't need to reinvent the wheel just to get good sound, so now they experiment on new things of using the music to express what you're doing like in the doom reboot, to immerse you in the world like elder scrolls, or to simply complement the worldspace they belong to like most modern games

Back at that time the title screens often had the best musics. People did stay and listen to those. But they could throw everything they could to the title song!
