It may be "suggestions" and "guidelines"... But a code is a code, and there are always hardlined rules. Every pirate knows it, every freighter and mover knows it, even most of the Longarms know it... First and foremost, you don't kill if you don't have to. Its bad for you, and its bad for everyone like you. Second, if you do kill, you make it quick. Torture is for the godless and the damned. Third, if you damage a vessel beyond saving, you take the crew of said vessel and drop them at the nearest port. Don't have to be nice about it, but you don't leave them to die. And, finally... If you start breaking any of these three rules, you'd best believe that the bounty on your head won't be what causes the bigger and badder to want you dead. No, you overstepped, and broke the Unbreakable Tenants of the Code. Which means every pirate, from King and Queen down to beginner will desire your head on a plate...

Don't know don't care, the fact that there were kids in the picture would suggest that Daws is a women, but even in history on many ships where groups of men were kept toghether for long times relationships bloomed (Matelotage on wikipedia)

Gay couple, with most likely adopted kids. The issue is not the make-up of the couple, what matters to the narrative is that Daws partner was most likely on that civilian transport with said kids that the bugs destroyed and this was a "payback" scenario.
