Panvel will always be in my heart because it is were my railway days started as station master. Infact i started as Yard master at an yard just 20 km from Panvel named Jasai near Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. Those freight trains which is entering Panvel station in this video, both BTPN and BTPGLN are both bound for Jasai Yard for loading.

Initially the train the Bombay Kurla (LTT)-Mangalore/Cochin Netravati (Cochin-Kurla) Express was plied between Bombay to Mangalore/Kochi as link via the inland Poona, Gulbarga, Guntakal, Renigunta, Krishnarajapuram, Palakkad route parting at Shornur Junction. Trains on the old route used to take 48 hours to reach Mangalore from Bombay. After the Konkan Railway line was operational in 1998, the route has been changed via the Konkan Railway and the Mangalore-Bombay running time was reduced drastically to 16 hours. On March 1, 1998, the Bombay Kurla (LTT)-Mangalore/Cochin Netravati (Cochin-Kurla) Express started running via the Konkan, making it the first scheduled service that ran the length of the Konkan Railway. The link express was made a single train till Kochi[1] and further extended till Thiruvananthapuram (which is the capital city of Kerala)

Those travelling by Konkan Railway route should remember George Fernandes then (1990) railway minister of India, Finance minister Madhu Dandavate and Planning commission Vice Chairman Ramakrishna Hegde for setting up KRCL as Indian Railways did not have funds to execute this project connecting Roha to Thokur near Mangaluru city by railway track via Ratnagiri and Madgaon.

Netravathi Express used to be via Palakkad. At Shoranur the train used to part into two with one going to Cochin and the other going to Mangalore. With the introduction of Konkan, it's route changed via konkan upto Kochi and then extended up to Trivandrum. Likewise before konkan Mangala Express was also via palakkad up to Mangalore. Then the route changed via konkan to Mangalore and extended to Ernakulam and renamed as Mangala Lakshadweep express. I usually travelled in this train when I was in school to go to Thalassery from Palakkad in non konkan days when it was single line and took only 4.5 hrs from palakkad to thalassery when Other trains usually took almost 7 hrs. Many fond memories I had with this train during my Mumbai days. Netravati express used to have one of the best on board catering. Not sure about now. Ok then bye.
