The advantages my VM gets are because it is behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) device. In the case of the VM, the NAT device (aka router) is the Oracle VirtualBox software which is configured to use the NAT Network. Most home users are also behind NAT devices because your standard Cable Modem or ADSL Modem also performs NAT. The NAT makes it so that the outside machines are unable to address anything inside your internal network. In order to get in, they need your machine to initiate a connection to the outside, which they used, but that would be difficult. Or you need to configure your NAT device with port forwarding so that the outside port of your NAT device is translated and forwarded to an internal host machine.
