Funny story about switch cleaner. My wife went to her sisters overnight so I decided to do some amateur radio at times I can't normally get on. All was going well till I reheated some spagh bol and decided to eat it in front of the radio. Bad idea. I unbalanced the plate and it landed on the carpet. I tried everything to get the stains out but you could still see it. Then I saw my switch cleaner and tried it. Believe it or not it worked. No idea what's in it but it lifted the red and I was able to sponge it off.

Stains on carpet while wife is away?... yeah yeah yeah..

Brilliant! Excellent video showing how to use and fix this old unit. Im looking at buying one second hand, mainly for the field strength funtionality as it has an antenna but will use the SWR meter too. Thanks. :)

As someone who used to own a Bird meter, it made no difference which socket was the input, and which was the aerial, and it shouldn't on a decent meter ? Ken

The Bird meter isn't a SWR meter Ken. So you can connect either way & turn the element either way to read forward or reflected power. To find out the SWR you then use a nomograph chart. The meter featured here is for a CB user to check SWR. This one is at the cheaper end of the market & originally sold for £14.99. So on cheap SWR meters like this, if you connect it the wrong way round, the forward/reflect switch will work the opposite way. Richard, G0OJF, UK

Am i the only one that's not happy with the PL plug on the patch lead going into the radio? however another great video Richard

I always blow the switches out with canned compressed air after spraying , then spray it again.

Looking for a little guidance. Maybe you can help me. I have an older Midland 40 channel CB. I can hook it up and when I go to check the Swr, it will not trigger the SWR meter at all. I started out trying to zero it on FWD, and on my other radios it works fine. But for some reason this radio is not putting out a signal to the coax it would seem. Other than that it seems to hear fine and transmit fine. I can have another radio 50 feet apart and they talk to each other. I haven't tried a longer distance. What do you think, or how should I test the output to see if it's making it to the coax? Can I do it with a multimeter? Of course this radio may have been operated before with a bad antenna setup. I did replace the transistor but it made no difference. I know how to check SWR. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A dead giveaway if the radio is transmitting is current consumption. On receive the radio will probably draw around 200mA. On transmit, this will rise to just over 1A. You can put a multimeter in series with the red positive lead of the power lead to check this easily & quickly. It's possible the radio has a fault making it only transmit at milliwatts rather than 4W; enough to talk to your other radio across the room, but not enough to drive your SWR meter. @@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 makes sense. I posted the question earlier today but refused to be beaten by this device. I traced the center coaxial lead thru the circuit board till I found a short. Solder had chipped away. I bridged it temporarily with a wire and it worked. So I soldered it, now it triggers the swr meter. Thanks for your advice.

How about getting some proper patch cables, I can see from a mile away, the one coming out of the rig is twisting around like absolute crap.

They get replaced regularly, being constantly connected & disconnected and flexed around. Richard
