Got to skip class that day...aw Mehak is so pretty! It was the all girls choir before Riley was added the year after. I miss everyone. Who did the mixing and thought to add vocal effects to an already great voice? Its wrong and not right for today's application of music, this is mixed like it came out of the 90's only accounting for stereo systems. Each track should be an identical copy of the main vocal. We have 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems and you need more layers to take advantage of that and bring it to the listener to the standard their equipment will allow (they can be on stereo headphones or speakers). Below is how you mix for surround sound, read on if you like. So first lock the track in time, then remove any spikes that are there, if everything is clipping then the singer is not singing correctly, nothing should clip unless you want dead speakers and/or headphones. So the singer always should have volume control so you can turn your attention to the surround sound mixing and not trying to fix a messed up vocal with a compressor effect or manually doing it, both are wrong. If the singer is good then you can utilize a surround sound in your mixing, if they are OK sounding then you have to make them sound great. So how to mix this song would be how MUSE or Billie Eillish's brother mix theirs. With layers of the same track, 1 dominate center track stays centers, the next 2 tracks/layers in a multi track setting get panned left and right even though the center channel is already in stereo. For a 5.1 surround sound the 3 layers is sometimes enough but does sometimes require adding more layers if there are no harmonies (2 voices in the song, in a 7.1 surround sound setting it needs a couple more to take advantage of the surround sound system You should do about . So for 5.1 or stereo you pan the non-dominate layers about Left:35 Right:40 (these are NOT panned to the same value because it works better with a singer who has volume control a little better, its a personal idea and choice because you aren't gonna notice a .5 decibel increase or decrease any higher you will, you can even got only a single point difference and it will be more subtle.) Then, if there are no harmonies you pan a another track layer to around Left: 60 RIGHT:65 then finally you pan another 2 to LEFT:100 RIGHT 95. the adjust the volumes to meld together it should feel like the singers voice is coming from literally every direction. Thats 5.1 for 7.1 just go another 2 layers and smaller increments of panning locations and also adjust the volumes of all. If the song has harmony vocals then you should use 2 of the layers you would normally put the main vocal in and put the harmonies in that location. You are trying to make the number of layers match the amount of speakers. The center channel is only in the event someone is only using stereo headphone then they still hear the song as intended, if everything is panned then stereo headphones get left out and that too common to not consider . You have to also take into consideration that volume wise the center channel doesn't change too much but still mixes, do this by turning the music up if it is still to loud drowning out the instrumentals up more. You should have only 1 backing track of music, all that mixing should be done by itself and you will do a good job, doing a bad one would be to give yourself more to focus on when mixing. So always mix down the instruments and export to a single file (also do this uncompressed......so to a wave file). To create a choir of only 1 singer, sing or have the singer sing in however many registers they can hit, say its 3, then have them sing 3 more, then 3 more, then 3 more, then 3 more and finally 3 more. The more you add the more it will sound like a choir. How to make it sound more natural, after blending the voices to your liking then on volume, then add a track effect of a parametric equalizer, make sure every voice has a similar equalizer setting on them, bringing highs, mids and lows in a way that every voices sounds slightly different, now add a pretty good amount of the track effect reverb (usually above around 35 to 50 percent, it mimics a decently large hall accounting for the fact more people so bigger room). The choir should rest and harmonize under the main vocal. Now what to do about the surround sound with that many layers. Way less increments or you can still go to the same increments of volume on the main vocals (this makes blending easier). Why can you do it to a choir and not a song without a choir........their volumes sit under the main vocals so the main vocals will punch through and be heard over it (you can still do this on a surround sound system but it will sound less like it surrounds and act more like you have stereo headphones, eliminating surround sound features all together (it might be right for the song). This is why you sing these individually, they need to sound like a natural choir and be dissimilar enough to still sound like a human, mimic the setting you would hear the choir in along with the volume and tone outlined above.) All mixing is case by case basis, sometimes mixing more traditionally might actually work better, its subjective. So this is how you account for the various systems people have, people appreciate it more when they can use anything and still get the same song and sound really close. You did a lot of work and it shows. I personally can sing and so I mix my own vocals, it was a learning process and I still am open to learn more about it. I am a bit luckier when it comes to a choir, my range is actually from a C2 to a C#6, but I can use the 7th octave with whistle notes and yes I sometimes do it but I use it sparingly even though I can control it, I consider it cheating the listener somewhat since its a trick to get to a higher vocal note (but I have heard people use it beautifully its a personal choice and opinion). There is a lot more to go into mixing now, the singer who mixed this mixed it like he grew up in the 90's. I also grew up in the 90's but I understand humans never stop learning and so I do learn new ways to do something that I sometimes already know how to do. I just had to figure out why MUSE's music more so much more than other artists, highly controlled and high attention to detail is why, both the vocals are controlled along with the structure of the music so it leads to a song that sounds like its moving on a surround sound system. If Queen would have had surround sound they would have mixed this way too, Matt from MUSe uses Freddie's style vocally, singing very opera driven, so its not copying it influence (some people get confused between the 2). Thats it sorry for the long post but I figured it might help someone who wants to mix their own vocals. All singers want creative control over the entire song, so a lot of them will mix their own song. Thanks for reading, if you are this far into it lol.
