I think this might be strictly for local and domain only accounts. Online Microsoft accounts will force a password from the looks of it. Following the steps listed, this is what I got: I booted the PC, I held shift and clicked restart. The PC booted in to the safemode / recovery mode screen. As seen in the video, I selected the trouble shoot, then advanced options, then clicked the start command prompt option. The PC then reboots to a screen where the administrator account is listed only. When clicking on this option, it asks for the administrator password. So in this case, this method does not work.

This works believe me. If you somehow manage to open the cmd (with accessibility icon) you have to type *control userpasswords2* in the cmd. This will open a password manager window. You will be able to do the rest yourself :D GIVE A LIKE IF WORKS

It doesn't work if your computer is encrypted because your computer doesn't decrypt anything until the boot process and this is bypassing that

I have a dell pc with intel rst active and raid mode on in bios and not ahci, which doesn’t show the internal hard drive or the windows directories in it if i boot into the pc using strelec winpe. I think you already know this software package. I’ve read somewhere that we should integrate into the winpe the intel rst drivers but i don’t know how to do that. Thanks again

This helped me even though I got the prompt to enter a password in recovery mode, I used a knoppix flash drive to boot the machine, mounted the windows drive and copied the Utilman.exe file as shown in the video.

​@@dimasnr00 No, changing file name back just restores accessibility options and does not restore the encryption keys. When you reset the password, encryption keys are lost and files can not be decrypted any more. Just google "Accessing EFS-encrypted files after resetting Windows password"

Changing the file name back at the end of the video just restores the accessibility features functionality at the login screen. It has nothing to do with restoring access to encrypted files.

What about it's bitlocker enabled drive? Bitlocker on windows drive c do not prompt you for password nor recovery key when you log in to your windows account. Does that mean strangers will be able to use this method to access our encrypted drive c? Update: Doesn't work if you have bitlocker

I seem to remember having a problem with that long ago, when using Linux, and I can't remember. You just say "close it" (but not how to) and then jump to a windows screen offering "Continue" with no instructions in between. I'll wait to hear from you before I do this. I forgot my password because I've just been using a pin for years - my accounts settings say my account is local. Oh, and what I really want to do is to NOT have a password at all, I think that can be done in Settings?? You have just shown me that a password is useless here, if someone is determined. I'm 83, live alone, and no one has access to my PC. However, I don't want my son to have trouble getting into my computer when I kick the bucket.

I am having trouble opening the command prompt after having overwritten utilman.exe with cmd.exe and restarting. When I click on accessibility I get the command window flashing for a split second only and then it disappears. :((( What shall I do now??? The second time I tried this solution, I experienced what you describe. I got around it by logging in using safe mode. That allowed the accessibility activated cmd.exe to launch. I was able to then reset the password on a local admin account then reboot and use that account as intended.

This method MAY work, it certainly does NOT work on a AsusPro notebook I am asked to recover. Instead of opening the selected Command window during the reboot process a blue Windows login screen (with both accounts listed) pops up, requesting the very password the users do no longer remember. The device has no CD tray so I cannot even use a Windows CD to boot. Even worse: the device does NOT react to any of the standard BIOS/Boot menu options (ESC, F2, F8..) when firing it up. All attempts are ignored and lead to the standard Login screen of Windows. What NOW? I promised help, came here and leave without any real solution..
