I use a red patch cable between modem and router and then yellow patch cables to connect between switches. And another color for other things that might have been hooked up that are not part of the regular network. That way I can always quickly identify the most important network cables. Pull the red cable if an unintended email was send ;-)

Color coding is a great way to go. I wish I had taken more time and ordered colored cables when implementing some of our wire closets. God bless!

I am trying to join the IT industry and seeing videos like this are really cool. It's also awesome to understand everything being said and talked about here even at just a surface level. When you brought up multicasting and STP being possible issues on the switch I was like 'I've heard those before!'. lol. Currently I am not employed but I have earned my A+ and Server+ certificates and am a mere few weeks away from taking my Network+ and then hopefully onto Sec+. But yeah Thanks for uploading videos like these so we can see how the knowledge can be applied in real life scenarios step by step.

You must have Hercules working there. That UPS in the next rack at the top must be fun to service. Replacing a failed switch is always fun - we're running Cisco and I've lost two in a stack in the last year. We're just starting a project to replace all our access layer switches so hopefully I can get that done before we lose any more.
@Darkk69694 ай бұрын
Ya, I always put the UPS at bottom of the rack as those things are very heavy. I am guessing they didn't have any space at the bottom for it.

What cisco switches are you using and what are you thinking of going to
@NetworkAdminLife4 ай бұрын
Luckily I don't have to put them up there. Our engineering department takes care of that for me. Show to to Jose who is an engineering monster! If I design a rack from the ground up, as in our MDF, yes, the UPS units will always go on the bottom. But many of these older racks have designed themselves, meaning no one really put any thought into planning the rack out. That's when you see UPS units at the top of the rack. God bless!

We do not use Cisco. We are an Extreme Networks shop. Mostly X460-G2 switches. God bless!

Mornin and Grace & Peace 2 U and your family brother! Thanks 4 this awesome MDF closet showcase! I love it when we can see hands on work! The one OCD trigger for me is the label on the outside of the left hand wing of the switch between the cage nuts that you had to remove with the old (bad) switch. I was waiting for you to say that you were putting it back as the "last thing to do", but it didn't happen (on camera at least). 😉 We all forget those little things sometimes (at least I do).
@NetworkAdminLife3 ай бұрын
You got me. Next time I go for coffee I'll put the label back on. The closet is right next to the coffee shop! God bless!

@@NetworkAdminLife I onboarded our company with the extreme networks partner program and they referred to it as “selling purple iron”. That stuck with me. God Bless you too sir.
@keithsauer35744 ай бұрын
When we were sold on it, guy said, anyone can sell you a box that switches packets. We can sell you purple boxes that switch packets too, but we sell an entire ecosystem. We ended up with the whole Netsight / Purview / control / etc...

Supported elevated data cabinets in a manufacturing environment. Doing a quad switch stack code upgrade on a scissor lift 16ft in the air is after hours is a royal pain. Hopefully you got out of there at a decent hour to enjoy the day.

Yeah, I got out of there at a decent hour... if you're on day shift. Didn't get out until 9:30am the next morning. Though the situation you describe sounds like it sucked more than my situation. God bless!

Is it Extreme networks? Quite surprised that those are still alive and used. I had stacks failed many times when replacing 1 switch in the stack, and we ended not using them in stacks anymore, and replacing them with Cisco / HP. Nice vid btw!

Good video, but I have a few questions. I don't think I have seen "stack" switches? What purpose do they serve other than the obvious purpose a switch normally serves. Are they managed or unmanaged? Who makes them? and.....never admit your old...lol...Thanks
@cablekitten-xn6pz4 ай бұрын
Stacking switches allow you to connect multiple switches, but manage it as one logical switch.
@Murph90004 ай бұрын
Depending on the exact switch manufacturer, model, and licensed features, you can get some interesting high availability from stacked switches; in addition to managing them as one big combined switch. E.g. you can run aggregated links across multiple switches, so that your uplinks, downlinks, and servers have a high availability (fault tolerant) connection. I.e. no single point of failure and no network pause while STP and/or routing reconfigures for the topology change.
@NetworkAdminLife4 ай бұрын
Good question! But @cablekitten-xn6pz and @Murph9000 have already given great answers. And those answers are exactly why I stack my switches. In the stack we have greater port density and greater fault tolerance. God bless!

can you type your network cabling connection? I did not get well how do you connect them but it sounds very organized.

Each switch is mounted below a patch panel which runs out to the office areas. That way I only need a 12 inch cable to connect the switch to the patch panel. God bless!
