@@KiwiRetro You're welcome. The 1988 Telethon, in fact, aired on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 7.30pm on the evening of Saturday 25 June 1988 and ran for 24 hours... with an extra five minutes as it finished at 7.35pm, according to the NZ Listener!

None of the nonsense we have to put up with today with the kids being taught that pedophiles and rapists live in every second house. And you could easily get peoples phone numbers and contact info from their companies because back then the anally retarded privacy loonies hadn't taken over. Back then we did something unheard of today, we actually helped each other. No hi-vis vests and yet the work got done just as safely as today. No mountain of paperwork required to make sure you are work safe compliant just to complete the simplest physical work. Oh and back then we smacked the kids (and were smacked) which is why we don't have all the social problems of today because the antisocial behavior was beaten out of us before it took root and became habitual.

@nzfalcon6578 the telethon is literally about family abuse... such a wonderful time! I remember every Xmas we would gather round the lounge and watch my drunk dad beat my siblings. Wish I I could go back... because Xmas these days is so boring

Most things were worse; worse racism, worse equality, worse car safety, worse education, worse food, worse roads, worse technology, more violence etc. How was it any better?

I can remember watching the 1988 Telethon and seeing mostly the Dunedin and Invercargill Telethon, we were on our way home to Southland from Oamaru that weekend so popped into the Dunedin Town Hall for an hour to watch the Telethon. I remember meeting Tom Bradley the TV1 newsreader and Gail from Coronation Street.

Everyone who watched that telethon remembers Leeza & Chris ended up together after this & Russell Smith before Play School working behind the scenes... my dad had a new wife and little boy... so I saw Russell on Play School in the afternoon with my little brother

In addition to Leeza Gibbons (from Coronation Street) and Christopher Quinten (better known as the dearly departed Brian Tilsley from Coronation Street), other international celebrities appearing at the 1988 Telethon included Blair Underwood (LA Law), Alix Elias (Hooperman), Estelle Getty (The Golden Girls), Mike Smith (The Late Late Breakfast Show), Max Gail (Barney Miller), Antonia Murphy (Sons and Daughters"), Kim Lewis ("Sons and Daughters), Susan Tully (EastEnders), Letitia Dean (EastEnders), Su Pollard (Hi-de-Hi!), Helen Worth (Coronation Street), Ian Rawlings (Sons and Daughters) and New Zealand's own Pat Evison (The Flying Doctors) to name just a few. David Rasche (Sledge Hammer!) and Corbin Bernsen (LA Law) were due to appear at that year's Telethon but it never happened... I think.

22:17 I have a question to ask. Who was the announcer, i.e. an Arkwright lookalike, whose voice was heard at the start of the live Lotto draws during 1988.

Unfortunately this is the only part I had. I found the tape at an op shop some time ago and I think it may have been part of a set, looks like whoever recorded it intended to get the lot but I only found the one tape.

It was 36 years ago, all of these people were well known in NZ at the time.. I guess the A listers you were thinking of didn't feel like flying for 14+ hours
