Hey Chuck to continue my background info I stated during the live stream of this video I have little experience I gain when I was at ECPI years ago. I know another guy stated he went to ECPI as well. ECPI is basically a fast track technical school. I sadly didn’t finish my degree. The rest and most recent experience I have is the freelance T-mobile gigs I have been doing the last couple of years off and on, but it was not a Contrator or full time IT job.

I was a 33 year old plumber and started my IT certification journey earlier in the year, my plan was to complete the CompTia pathway and try to get entry level cyber role, I loved the learning and I felt I was wasting my time in my job and I should just try to get into IT and build my skills. Well I did it, after an extensive interview process I've landed a IT Support Engineer role at a cyber company having only ITF and Net+. I recently discovered your channel and I plan to go through it all. Good luck to everyone out there and don't get discouraged and keep fighting.

I think we all deal with some imposter syndrome but I'm happy that I am following a long time dream of mine, I never saw myself growing up being in blue collar work but that's how it ended up and its an honest living but u felt I wasn't living up to my potential and I felt under utilised but I see it as an advantage having seen the real world and gained valuable life experience where as some people IT is all they know. If you want it go for it, you can always fall back on your building if it's not for you. Good luck

Chuck, you are the man. After watching this video and having no IT experience or certifications. I started applying to jobs and finding a way to directly email HR. I explained that I was currently studying for the A+ and even offered to shadowing. They saw how hungry I was to learn, and I got the job as a entry level data center technician. One step closer to the goal. Update: Hey guys, sorry I was not able to respond sooner, I'm currently overseas with the military. Overall, in the civilian sector, things are great mainly because I had the opportunity to work with great people. All i had to do was show interest and ask the right question. You don't need to know everything to create a difference in your work environment. I was never late, never said no when extra work was needed, and took plenty of notes. Made great friends that even at the moment, some of them have reached out to offer me other opportunities. Currently, I'm studying for my security+, and I will try to get into cybersecurity when I get back to the States.

For example, mouse not working. What to do? - Just unplug and replug, check if laser is working, try a different mouse etc. They said most other interviewees make it too complicated, thus blowing their chance. They also appreciated my customer service background and people skills. And I took your suggestions about how to make the resume, I think that helped me a lot. Thank you very much for your help. @@emilyau8023 Hey Tangerine 😊. I have found that this is a common complaint with many job positions. There are some job postings that list 0-2 years of experience, however few. I would suggest using any technical/customer support experience which you have gained. Being able to explain in detail technical/customer assistance which you have provided to friends, family, to a religious organization or social group can help better define the "years" of experience.

I'm working in IT Helpdesk for over 15 years. Not because I'm dumb to climb the ladder, but it is because when I would go up there is little customer contact. And that is something I really would mis. For me I do 1st and 2nd tier support and love to do workplace support and taking on calls. It can be a great satisfying feeling helping the person in need.

One thing I would add to the entire subject at or around 1:14:13 Help desk experience will be required for many jobs, it teaches you basic fundamentals that will go a long way. If you have 3 certs but no experience I would suggest to jump into a help desk immediately! Even if its for 6 months, who knows? you might find your dream job within. Or if you go door to door or word of mouth to some administrator you might know can possibly get you an in as a analyst or SOC engineer.

After settling in I found myself so freaking fired up to work the help desk job that I couldn't get enough of it lol! Bring on the tickets man!!!! I gained so much experience in 6months time that management saw how much passion I had helping people and learning the whole IT department that they offered me a promotion to Infrastructure within 6months. I accepted the promotion and now make way more money but the story doesn't end there...I am having freakin fun working in infrastructure as we speak. The key to IT from what I've learned the past 7 months is that I am there to help people get back to work. No matter how high a role you're at you're still bringing customer service to everyone. I am keeping that same passion in infrastructure while I keep learning and helping employees get back to work. Bring on the network problems man!!!! If you break it I will fix it lol!

I got my first IT job at a local computer repair shop while going to school for Network Admin, which was GREAT EXPERIENCE!!! The repair shop job really taught me a lot... repair & building PCs/electronics, doing at home/business network repair/setup, and then sales in the shop its self. I've been following you for a while now and hearing a few stories, I wanted to share one of my own. Despite the age of this video. My dream job was to work on videosgames. My path to that wasn't the average path and I'll skip the boring stuff. From school I joined the Marines. Did 10 years, then continued to work in retail as a Store Manager for GameStop (gaming related) and been working part-time on the weekends while still in on active duty. Later on, I managed to break in officially by becoming a tester (QA) and was working in the gaming industry for a few years. Later, I got into software after another contract gig has ended and I tired of the contractual game industry gigs. Software was where it was at, but the company I was with had issue and I was laid off only to get hired back a few months later and laid off again 2 years later. After many other job offers, final interviews, I landed a job in IT because I was familiar with IT and had personal experience with customer service and computer knowledge. It was huge pay cut going rom a Lead QA Engineer to IT Support Specialist, but 3 years later I'm making more now than I was at my last company working on software. Always learning new stuff. Spend most of my time on KZbin watching IT videos. Getting refreshers on things I use to know and learning things I didn't. Attending IT conferences and etc has helped and yes, if you're great at customer service, that's the most important thing. You may not have an immediate answer, but communication and a great attitude goes a long way.

@@bluntdocto2571 Not sure if you already thought about this, but create AWS account and start practicing Active Directory. All hiring managers just wanted to know if I know AD. Which I didn't. So, I started creating basic Windows Server and Active Directory accounts in AWS. You can also practice DHCP, DNS, Exchange in cloud. I have been on Helpdesk for over a year and now thinking about going back to AWS and work on advance skills.
