Great tips James thanks for the video! I'm still in the phase of writing my research proposal, and it's been a long journey so far (I work full time + have a family), but networking and specifically a cold email was what started my whole PhD journey over a year ago. Since then I've met so many people who are doing incredible things and have had such helpful perspective for me. The struggle I have is maintaining these relationships with how crazy life is (could also be said about my personal social relationships lol).

Hi! Dr. Hayton! Love the content of this video! Any tips to deal with supervisors/mentors who don't encourage collaborations/industry internships??

Depends what you mean by "don't encourage"... what have they said about it? If they try to stop any communication with other students or academics, then in all honesty I would change supervisors or leave.

I have been waiting for your video about Ph.D and research perspectives on this rapid development of AI era. How is it going to change the research system and the academia. Your taught on this will be very interesting to everyone. Also you taught about using AI(like chat gpt) as an assistant for researchers should be a hot topic. Thank you.

My thoughts are developing on this, but my general view is that whatever software you use (whether that's analytical software or AI), as a researcher you still need certain key skills. For example, I've long said that if you use statistical analysis software, you need to understand what it's doing on your behalf so you can interpret the results correctly or check for mistakes. The same goes with AI. If you use chat AI as an assistant, let's say to summarize a paper, you still need the ability to do that work yourself. I heard a recent interview ( I think with Kevin Kelly, but I'm not sure), who said that AI is like an intern- you can get it to do certain useful tasks but you have to check its work. If you're using AI to do everything, or you're using it to write your thesis for you, you shouldn't get a PhD.

Thank you so much. Any advice for PhD students who have withdrawn from their field of study?
