This is a great comparison! I have a pair of KM 184s, and I've always wondered how they compare to the KM 84s. Based on these examples, I definitely prefer the overall tonality of the 84, but the lower noise of the 184 is definitely nice. I always end up doing some subtractive EQ to my recordings with the 184s, and now I know that what I'm actually doing is making them sound more like the original mic they're based on! The nice thing is that the EQ adjustments are easy and they work well, and I don't feel a need to replace my 184s with vintage 84s. Thanks for taking the time to make this comparison!

Yes the 184's are great to work with and super silent! You can get away with some eq adjustments, not totally the same. But if the source is sounding good, you'll have a great recording! Thank you for watching this video David!

I think the 84 is more natural, it doesn't have as much middle as the 184, and I think it's more realistic, since the guitar neck doesn't have as much middle range. Regardless, the 184 is an excellent microphone, perhaps the best you can buy. 84 one, as far as I know, is no longer produced. Great video, it shows the two microphones well. thank you very much

I have both, and I like both very much, but not as much as my Beyer MC930s which are generally my favourite mics for acoustic guitar. I like the mellowness of the 84s for solo guitar. For ensemble playing, the brighter mids of the 184 help to cut through the mix. I also find it quite easy to remove the extra brightness of the 184s where necessary, using EQ.

interested to know how you find self noise on the beyers. they sound lovely. i have a 201 which is amazing but quite a lot of self noise

I have been using km184s for over 10 years. They’re bright and modern in a good way. If used with a good transformer or tube mic pre you get a great result. I did a studio session with original km84s on drum OH once. They sounded great but I’d save my money if it matters.

Yes definitely! Km184s are also working great on darker/dull sounding sources as well.

I would say that the 184 and the 84 have their own mids… the 184 lacks what the 84 has in mids, but the 84 lacks what the 184 has in the mids. While the 84 is a little more neutral and flat with a touch of transformer warmth, the 184 is a lot more realistic and 3D, and a touch of brightness that has to occasionally be managed, and that brightness is highly manageable- not problematic,.. it’s just the way it is

I had both mics. I sold the 184. The bass on the 184 was overhelming, other than the bass was a great mic. In your demo is not as noticeable as on my projects. ¿Maybe you eq or comoressed? I have 3 km84, and the sound is great.
