Neumann U47 vs U47fet

I like the FET on the louder passages and the U47 on the softer ones.

The U47 just has that classic warmth in the bottom. Deeper, richer, no harshness, shaves off transients. The FET is more upfront, more immediate, less saturated, less smooth. Both great mics but the clear winner for this style vocal is the u47. For a modern hip hop vocal or something faster in tempo the fet would probably win in that scenario. Thanks for the comparison

Great points! I do think I prefer the u47f against the u87 atleast. Very clear and fast. Tube mics are usually nicer on vocals but sometimes they can be a bit sluggish. Thanks for watching!

47fet is my favorite. I finally saw a quality comparison of microphones on KZbin, where everything is perfectly clear and audible. This is the bomb. Why can't other bloggers do that? It's not that hard

Great video! the tube one is a little bit warmer, but nothing you can`t do by eq and some tube emulation or using a tube preamp for the FET one. Is nice to hear not such a big difference, at least not a one that justify the price difference.

Both great but I liked the brighter tone from the U47fet better in this particular case, it's a slight "brittle" on the higher notes/volume 4:44 but it just personal taste.

u47 f sounds brighter in the song in my opinion sounds better but on the raw files the u47 sounds better specially at minute 4:46 . u47F starting to sound a little harsh and almost distort a little bit , I like the u47 better but I will definitely , will not spend the extra money on the U47 wen 99% of people won't notice the difference but my wallet will lol . what an awesome video brother thank you for giving us the opportunity to hear the difference between this 2 awesome mics

Awesome video as usual. I downloaded the Raw files, the Fet is more flattering at first just because of the extended high end and scooped mids but by opening up the 47 a bit on top, it really comes alive for this performance, and the rich mids just give it a great vibe and intelligibility. Though with just a little eq touch up in the mids and lows, I was able to get the 47fet to sound really close though it's still hard to match that weight the 47 has, which makes your voice sound a bit deeper. Ultimately I could see both of these mics working really well depending on the instrumentation. I could imagine the FET being really cool for heavier rock where the voice needs to cut but there's already a ton of midrange info coming from the guitars.

Good analysis! The fet is snappier, brighter. I kind of like it! A bit annoying around 1khz but that's why we have Eq. I think I have a V76 tube pre incoming and I'd love to explore fet mics with tube pre's To see if you'd get the ultimate combo. These tests though kind of sentiment what I already thought which is that all vintage Neumanns are quite alike tone wise especially if you process them.

@@Christian_svedin I agree, particularly in a lot of today's music where the vocals really need to be processed. I still think the 47 has an extra something for vocals, the way it compresses, particularly in the high end when a singer gets really dynamic is something I haven't heard in the Fet Neumanns. Neumann into V76 is such a classic chain. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed. As far as solid state preamps go, I've always loved the Neumann PV76 pre with Neumann mics, you never hear about it but it is such a wonderful preamp.

U47 still has that warm magic on the lows and silky rounded off highs. The fet less warm without that kind of warm surround feeling of the tube 47 and a bit sharper like a faint buzziness to the highs.

Pretty similar. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Both have a K47 capsule. I do wonder if a tube preamp would help the FET though. Nudge a little to the tube sound of things (round off the transients and a bit more body perhaps). But I thought overall the FET performed great. Especially considering the price difference I guess.

Maybe! I don't have much experience with different tube pres except my V76. But the v76 brightness up the source oppose to smoothening it. But say an la2a or something like that could probably work. I feel most vintage Neumanns sound closer to each other then what people think.

I have a Summit MPC-warms up the most strident/edgy mic. btw-meant what I said on your vocal. Better imo than the original recording, which also was good-esp that nasty octave jump at chorus.

Hey Christian, checking in after 6 months. Just picked up my new U47fet fet this week, and this work/video you did was one of the reasons to go that route vs a tube mic. Did a lot of other research as well, but this video was outstanding, and clearly compared the mics . No tube comp yet, but do have some decent neve-style pre's, and an old Meek V7 I'll try it with. Just wanted to drop a note of thanks for the original video and your suggestions.

I think the original u 47 sounds a lot warmer and rounder with less high end. I feel like the u47 high end is a little too sharp for my taste, but anyways the u47 fet is a pretty solid mic

I would probably not get a U47F if you're thinking of recording vocals. I mean I like it but there are allot of options in the 2-4k range. U47 is a whole nother thing. U47 is glorious on the right voice.

I recently had a TlM103 and to me it sounded thin and harsh, even my sm7b sounded much warmer and thicker. I was thinking of getting the u87ai but do you think it will have the same thiness and harsh highs of the tlm103 ? Or is it closer to the 47 in warm and mellow notes ?

@@EM-km8em I mean if I could chose :) . The U47F seem to be faster (transient resp) and has a different mid boost then the u87. I'm not a u87 fan so if it's between those two then U47F. But in that price range there are allot of better options. Chandler TG if you want a Fet. 3k+ range you have access to pretty much any newly build mic if you search on the used market. I prefer tube mics for vocals . Good luck 💪

I've used the Stam 47 and the 87. They sound good but they are a modern interpretation of the Neumann sound, a little brighter on top, a little more scooped in the mids compared to the vintage Neumanns I've used. If that's something you want, they are a contender and most people would probably like that sound better as it fits contemporary recording esthetics. I personally still like the classic sound better but maybe it's just because I'm used to it.

​@@karaokesypistasI'll start by saying I've never used an NT2a but in my experience cheaper condensers tend to be a little harsh in the high end. I'd imagine the Stam to be a pretty significant step up but again, microphones are so voice dependent that maybe your voice would sound better on the Rode. The U87 voicing is a pretty safe bet though, it tends to work on a lot of people so it's a good first buy. I'd probably save a little bit more and get a used 87ai, in the EU you can find one pretty easily for around 1500€ and resell it if you don't like it. I personally like my voice better on a Beyer M88 or an SM7 than on my expensive Neumann, Schoeps and Telefunken, so you know, you just have to experiment.

Would be great to hear a comparison of these two on other sources as well. Outside kick for example, since that's a common position for the FET one. Also on a bass amp would be interesting. And of course ac/el guitar. But mostly on drums, since I'm biased from being a drummer lol

Absolutely! But I don't have a studio anymore I'm afraid. But if my channel grows I will absolutely do more extensive tests. Btw I don't think any mic is worth 3-4k to put in front of a kick. There are probably a ton of mics that would work equally well.

@@burnradio9681 the u47f is probably the fastest Neumann I've tried so that is probably why people like it on kick. But I'm sure any clone would do since atleast I usually tend to Eq the kick quite heavily. There's quite a few clones around 1-1500$ mark (Y)

It has more vibe for sure! Preamps matter. But most preamps are good these days. If you like you can check out my "Neve ovverated" Ep where I compare a Neve clone to my RME ufx preamp. Most prefer the Neve but I could use either. Mic is so much more important. Thanks!
