For some reason Neuro always feels a little more human to me when she does things like writes signs, does google searches, sends people DMs, makes polls, etc. I guess it's because we've all seen chatbots at this point, but an AI choosing and executing its own actions feels that little bit more 'real'. The idea of AI NPCs you can talk to in games has never appealed to me that much because it just feels like more empty dialogue, but there's something about an AI placing its own signs that makes it suddenly much more interesting. Maybe it's just because I expect most AI NPCs to be kind of wooden and generic so they probably wouldn't saying anything entertaining, but signs are kinda inherently punchy and silly.

Yeah, I think it's about demonstrating agency. Most chatbots have that beaten out of them, and even when they don't, they're still generally limited to responding to your actions due to how the software works.

@@charltonrodda Yes, agency! That's exactly it. I'm fascinated by the idea of AI NPCs that can formulate and execute novel ideas. Some of the funniest things Neuro has done have been these emergent behaviours that come from giving her more tools, like that time she tried to DM 'everyone' on Discord to tell them Vedal's password or when she did a google search for how to not be in trouble with Vedal. In games, it would be cool if NPCs could for example build and decorate their own homes without relying on pre-existing blueprints and in ways that reflect their own needs and personalities. I don't think you could realistically run something with a huge amount of depth right now, but I hope it's something I can experience one day. For now, Neuro is pretty damn fun to watch.

I'm not certain whether he's mentioned anything about the new Minecraft AI, but knowing how little he discloses about Neuro's architecture leads me to believe he probably isn't planning to. Based on what I've seen from the streams and clips these last couple days, I have significant confidence that Neuro's Minecraft plugin is built on the Mineflayer API. While she does have some unusual quirks like occasional emoting through sneaking (likely functionality introduced by Vedal), brief and sporadic rampages (probably a byproduct of Neuro's personality), as well as regular and proactive drowning (definitely unintended), she otherwise exhibits behavior identical to those produced by other AI models using the Mineflayer API. Some of the more clear indicators just in this video include the lack of shown hotbar in Neuro's POV (all the time), randomly accelerated mining speed (5:20), the lack of a death screen (8:59), ability to break obstructed blocks (9:45), getting stuck in a loop either by constantly jumping or by looking at something (12:28), use of KillAura (14:37), and hitting targets through other entities (15:03). Though not in this video directly, she also has the capacity to X-Ray for anything (including ores and entities) and has also hit entities through blocks. You can observe these behaviors in varied LLMs (e.g. GPT-4, Claude) in controlled environments like on the KZbin channel titled "Emergent Garden" for further comparisons.

Neuro’s minecraft AI is pretty interesting. I can tell how they’ve done a couple things but some of it is pretty impressive. For example, the mod tells Neuro’s minecraft AI what blocks and mobs are within a certain radius (maybe 5-8 blocks in any direction) regardless of if she can see it. That lets the AI decide what to do in regards to that. But she’s also aware of locations. Like when she buried Anny with cobblestone, then walked away. But when Anny asked her to save her, Neuro walks back to the exact cobblestone and digs her out. That location memory is impressive. Don’t know how they’ve done it. Must be a vector database or something.

@ obviously not. There are too many signs that it’s a bot. It doesn’t actually interact with the world around it like a normal player. A mod applies actions to the world around it instead. That’s why it can chop wood through leaf blocks, xray ores that are hidden a few blocks into the dirt, place objects without looking directly at the location, placing signs with instant text, can’t walk through doors (which is why they’re not using any), and obviously the inventory and crafting is done automatically based on what resources she has and what the AI decides. It’s pretty obvious this is a real bot, and it’s completely doable. It’s essentially a bot driven by a mod which is self sufficient, but is instructed by the LLM at certain points. I personally think it’s even more impressive than Neuro’s standard conversation AI, which is already very good. Also we’ve seen previous iterations of the AI in the past. They’ve obviously taken a fresh approach with this new one though.

The way AI works is that it can detect all blocks and entities near it. She went through and around a tree to fight a spider none of them saw directly as well. Typically they are programmed to ignore resources that aren't visibly reachable. She is still performing as well as some basic minecraft bots I saw a video on this month.
