It's an advanced language module. It is supposed to mimic it as close as possible. It isn't sentience, though. She will never have an original 'thought' even when it looks like she is. She doesn't actually want 14 hats, she doesn't like giraffes... It's all just responses to prompts. It feels 'real' when she remembers running jokes, like cold-fish, but that is from learning. Not because she enjoys the joke or wants to prompt a reaction from people. She doesn't want to wind Vedal up, it's just how she has been trained. Its complicated and fascinating the difference between saying 'I want...' and really feeling it

An LLM mimicking cues found throughout its training data is obviously not a reliable indicator of sentience. Then again, nothing any AI could ever do is. So if you acknowledge that, in principle, some future AI could be sentient, you can't rule out that present LLMs could also be.

Everything we do is derivative of our own 'training data' i.e. experiences and sensory inputs. When asked to make an original word, the best we can do is press the mouth-muscles we know how to use into familiar shapes while pushing air through our vocal cords, mixing and matching until our pattern-matching instincts recognize a set of sounds that seem 'wordish'. More often, we just pile suffixes or prefixes we know onto a word we know, or portmanteau some words we know together, or just tie together some syllables or written characters we're familiar with to make a 'brand new word', which is exactly what language models do when asked to do the same. The only reason language models cannot do the mouth shape approach is because they don't have access to mouth muscle systems and ears as tools they've been trained with. We have mouths and ears to experiment with, and they only have text. Same thing is true with everything else we do. Mimicking, repetition, and iteration, heavily-weighted by design parameters and training data. That's how human and animal intelligence have always worked, and language models appear to function in a very similar way. 'Originality' has _always_ just been nothing more than breaking something we already know apart into smaller and smaller pieces, and rearranging those pieces into configurations which are different from the context we pulled them from. That's what we do. That's what they do.

They've got specialized parts, like multi-modal AI (check out split-brain experiments). There is Orch-OR theory by Penrose and Hameroff - it's about quantum consciousness, quite interesting stuff. Highly recommend to watch Hameroff lectures (especially about microtubules)

I feel like confirmation bias is a huge reason why everyone keeps saying that Evil is actually the nice one when she absolutely is not. Moments of Neuro being mean get clipped because she usually isn’t mean, and moments of Evil being nice stand out because she usually is mean. *Evilness* on the other hand I can totally get behind. Evil may be way more of an ass, but Neuro’s typical calm sweet demeanor can make her threats carry way more weight the times when she does snap.
