Perfect summary and understatement extraordinaire ☺ My son suffered severe nerve damage from a Pituitary MacroAdenoma and the resultant, nearly fatal development of 3rd/4th Ventricle Hydrocephalus. Understanding symptomology specific to midbrain/brainstem injury and their manifestation through cranial nerve dysfunction has been critical in helping his clinicians stay informed of emerging instabilities immediately (and avoid hospitalizations). This video is a Godsend. Thank you for producing/posting this.

Thanks to Dr. Krebs and UBC Medicine for this videos. Both of them present the material with ease and clarity, which makes it incredibly helpful and insightful. "Understanding cranial nerve function is an important diagnostic tool", a senteces that perfectly summarizes the importance of knowing and understand the midbrain/brainstem to apply the knowledge in the practice with the specific symptomology they present. All I can say is that this is an amazing content that helped me learn a lot more in this process of being a Med student. This was the best way to explain the brainstem, making it look so simple that I questioned why did it took me so long to understand it.

The video is of great quality for 8 years old! The brainstem is complex, from which the 11 cranial nerves apparently originate. Do not forget that the substantia nigra is found in the mesencephalon and that the colliculi are anterior and the peduncles posterior. The nerves that are apparently born in areas such as the mesencephalon, these really are born in nuclei of that area (III and IV). Personally, the most complicated thing about the brainstem is the pathways. Good video.

The brainstem (brain stem) is the distal part of the brain that is made up of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. Each of the three components has its own unique structure and function. Together, they help to regulate breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and several other important functions. All of these brainstem functions are enabled because of its unique anatomy; since the brainstem houses cranial nerve nuclei and is a passageway for many important neural pathways. The brainstem begins at the level of the cerebral peduncles (anteriorly) and the corpora quadrigemina or quadrigeminal plate (posteriorly) or tectal plate. It continues along a slight posteroinferior course until it ends at the decussation of the pyramids (at the level of the foramen magnum of the skull). The brainstem is widest at its proximal end and becomes narrower toward the distal end. There are three parts of the brainstem: The medulla oblongata is the narrowest and most distal part The pons lies anteriorly and in the middle segment of the brainstem and the midbrain is the widest and most superior segment.
