Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 3D Animation

A video created for inspirational and creative enthusiasm. Holland, 1945 is from the 1998 album IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA by the band NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL.
Done over a 6 month period, in my spare time, using Maya 3D, Photoshop and After Effects. Everything was made from scratch for this video. More to come.

Supposedly, Jeff wrote most of this album after hanging out in Seattle for a year (mostly Capitol Hill). A lot of the songs were based half on reality, and half on the dreams he had during that time. The first half of this song takes a very linear approach, following the Life of Anne Frank, but then kind of ascends into a dream (beginning with the line "Now she's a little boy in Spain, playing piano's filled with flames) The song then follows random dreamlike trajectories before coming back and finding resolution with her death. (It's so sad the world to see, the world agree, they'd rather see their faces filled with flies) NOTE: Anne Frank did -not- die weeks before the guns (as once thought) her and sister Margot died at about 2 months earlier than previously thought, probably of Typhus... READ THE BOOK if you haven't already...

I mean there is speculation about the exact month she died, February or March, and the camp was liberated in April. So either way it was weeks maybe more than a few but it was not long, and I don’t think he means weeks in such a strong literal sort of way. But anyways most of the song isn’t strictly pertaining to her as opposed to this whole charade of life, we all go through this tragedy. There are specific things that relate to her and the Holocaust, but I think it also captures this large drama of the human experience and condition.

This is so well done. I like the blend of concrete images along with psychedelia-- much like Mangum's lyrics. I expected the animation to just literalize the lyrics, but you added a lot of original ideas in a way that pairs well with the aesthetic of the song. You put heart into this, I can tell. This is so interesting, because when I listen to this album I can often vividly visualize what I am hearing, and the initial shots you have of the camera rolling over a tubelike landscape is EXACTLY what I tend to envision. Except, it’s usually what I envision when I listen to Untitled versus Holland 1945. Super interesting that we have similar takes, felt cathartic somehow

Hi there! Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I did all of the modeling/animation/FX in Maya then I just used After Effects to comp and Edit. Man, what I wish I knew then. Had lots of learning to do and I used this project as a primer.
