Exactly, this song reminds me of my old local church "youth group" I used to go to so I could avoid going home after school because it was Like That. It's whole purpose was to keep miserable teens out of trouble because there was fuck all else to do. You listen to some "Jesus loves me" bible stuff for a bit then you got to go fool around for a few more hours.
My parents were extremely abusive to us and each other. Alcohol and drugs and mental illness it was a nightmare. This was my existence growing up until they went to prison. This song always reminds me of growing up

The whole controversial “I love you Jesus Christ” thing - Jeff was from an abusive chaotic family and my interpretation of it is he will sometimes revert to a belief that helps him deal with how bad he feels It doesn’t mean that either it’s a completely true belief or that he’s religious , he just goes there hoping it will fix something in him that it ultimately can’t. I am a recovering abusive victim who has done this myself and that’s what I feel Jeff transmitting here, whether it was his deliberate intention to when he wrote it or not. Probably just some powerful subconscious shit because he was an amazing songwriter and I imagine he just wrote what came to him. If you listen to the chaos of the lyrics and music versus that one random line about Jesus, it fits together I fucking love his music 💯💚

crazy how people have to apologize and explain away the name of Jesus in a song! He was a real, living person and He came as God in the flesh to show us how to get to God: repent and believe in His sacrifice. He said He is the way, the truth and the life and that no one can come to God except through Him, and He loves us so much He made Himself our bridge back to our Creator. look into it yourself, friends. Jesus loves you and He will not turn back anyone who sincerely comes to Him

@@slick_Ric no man it’s an artistic take you obviously don’t know about this guy he ain’t religious he said it in interviews so it’s odd for him to say “I love you Jesus Christ” it symbolizes his desperate hope as he came from an abusive family, he was looking for something to cope and all he knew was Jesus.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The flow of it all is one of the most flawless things ever, and Part 3 is my favorite song off it. No bad songs either. I tend to listen to it with headphones, but I recently brought my CD and boombox to work and listened to it while cleaning, and it gave me chills when I played it out loud. Jeff’s voice has a specific reverb effect on it that I guess can’t be heard on headphones, which makes the album a million times better than it already is. This album is only beaten by one other album for favorite though, but it’s in my top 3.

I mean idk if this song was really ever popular sure it’s well known among music circles but among the general populace if you we’re to ask someone that listens to only Taylor swift drake or The Weeknd they would have no idea what you’re talking about

This album was my first true comfort album. Sure, I had other comfort albums, but this was always a comfort album for me, whereas my other comfort albums were only comfort albums because of certain songs, or certain memories/things that I associate with the album. This entire album just makes me feel comfortable, like nothing can keep me down. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a top 10 album for me.

When you were young You were the king of carrot flowers And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder And dad would throw the garbage all across the floor As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for And this is the room One afternoon I knew I could love you And from above you how I sank into your soul Into that secret place where no one dares to go And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking And dad would dream of all the different ways to die Each one a little more than he could dare to try

I love you, Jesus Christ Jesus Christ, I love you, yes I do I love you, Jesus Christ Jesus Christ, I love you, yes I do And on the lazy days, the dogs dissolve and drain away The world it goes and always waits The day we are awaiting Part Three [Verse 2] Up and over we go Through the wave and undertow I will float until I learn how to swim Inside my mother in a garbage bin Until I find myself again Again, oh-oh-oh-oh [Verse 3] Up and over we go Mouths open wide and spitting snow I will spit until I learn how to speak Up through the doorway as the sideboards creak With them ever proclaiming me Me, oh [Verse 4] Up and over we go The weight it sits on down and I don't know I will shout until they know what I mean I mean the marriage of a dead dog sing And a synthetic flying machine Machine, oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh (Okay)

I imagine part 2 as waves of human cruelty and suffering crashing against a resolution to see the best in people. I was raised Christian, so there are also strong feelings of surrendering myself and the weight of all that pain to Christ. I don’t know if I still believe, knowing what I know now, but I believe some part of me still does in some way. I can only listen to this once every few years bc I feel that imagery so strongly on every listen and I don’t want to dull that experience

It’s quite interesting how the 3rd part of this song evolved. Initially the song appeared as „Synthetic Flying Machine“ by a predecessor-band to NMH with the name like the song. After forming NMH the song re-issued as „Up and over…“ on some tapes, eventually ending up as King of carrot flowers part 3. The sound and speed changed quite significantly over the course of time
