To commemorate the 1st anniversary of my first ever review on KZbin, today I'm tackling the acclaimed "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea", the final album by indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel, and one of my true favorite albums of all time. The album's concept centers on Holocaust victim Anne Frank and lead singer Jeff Mangum's fixation on her and her posthumously released diary.

I saw the memes and backstory for this album and didn't give it a chance for the longest time. Like seriously, you're really keyed up about Anne Frank, from the book we all read in middle school? Now its my favorite album.

Another album that ends with that kind of feeling is "The King is Dead!" by the Decemberists.

Great video and review as always, but I gotta say I absolutely disagree with your take on the fool. That song is incredibly emotional to me. It's a funeral song.

i saw an analysis about this album that describes this album perfectly imo, the core theme of this album is, should you kill yourself or keep living? the latter idea represented by anne frank, who still wanted to live in spite of living through the holocaust. and the idea that you should kill yourself, explored on a lot of songs, but the best exploration in holland 1945, would be the view of mangums friend who killed himself before recording the album. the two-headed boy would be those two ideas. the analysis is split into 2 ig post from the user: rapthoughtworld. I think it's the best review of that album i've seen, and has made this album my fav oat

Sorry, just now saw this; my favorite album is Exile in Guyville by Liz Phair. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is also no longer my #2 but it's still in my top 5.

This is definitely one of the most impressive pop albums I've heard, but I'm not quite sure how great it is. It is in my 2nd tier masterpieces, with "Oh Comley!" as the heart of the album for me. The lo-fi production is excellent, feels like it was recorded from a camp. The surreal lyrics display a wide range of sensual images, but the most powerful aspect of the album is probably Jeff Magnum's voice, leading the emotional state of almost every moment of the album, especially when out of tune, constantly changing from low to high. No, this is not your average indie, hipster stuff.

As much as I enjoy that album, it's not my favorite Pumpkins record; I prefer Siamese Dream and Gish at the very least, and unfortunately my interest in their music has actually kind of gone down over the time since 2019 (I still love them, just never listen to them).

This is probably the album I can’t understand the love for the most. I think this album is quite literally a meme. When it came out, reviews were favorably but nowhere near glowing, and nobody listened to this band, nobody cared, that is until they starred becoming a meme on sites like 4chan because of the sickening lyrics and Jeff Mangum’s horrible voice. It’s just kind of one of those records that you’re told that you have to love or else you don’t know what music is. And if it’s all supposed to be about Anne Frank, why are there so many nods and references to semen and cannibalism in the lyrics? I mean, if someone told me that this album was written by Ed Gein, I would believe them! That said, you still reviewed it excellently, so I hit the like button! :) 👍🏼

I fell in love with this album long before I knew what mu was. My brother showed it to me when I was in middle school and I love it to this day. You may only see the album as a meme but that doesn’t mean others don’t find genuine value from it
@curly_wyn

@@cesyneighistaut3451 I’m not sure how anyone could find genuine value from an album like this, other than the fact that it just happens to be an emotional album. The lyrics make even Pinkerton look innocent by comparison. I guarantee if it was anyone but NMH and Jeff Magnum P.I. or whatever his name is who wrote this, you might immediately go: “oh my Gawd, this guy needs some serious help!”

I always get irritated when I see these types of posts. "I don't like it and I don't get it so nobody else should either and if they do it's only because they're trying to fit in." I love this album and I didn't need some obnoxious, elitist music nerd from 4chan to tell me that. The lyrics delve into dark subject matter, so what? The Velvet Underground were making songs about darker stuff back in the sixties. Anne Frank was just a partial inspiration for the album. As for Mangum's voice, it's an acquired taste I get that, but I really feel the passion and emotion he's trying to convey and I actually find his performance very infectious. Maybe come back to it one day with an open mind and give it another try.

It's good, but it's been done better previously, and I don't think it's really that deep. The most interesting thing about the album has always been the inspiration imo. It's no Spacemen 3 or Guided By Voices. Maybe personally I've never cared for lyrics as much though, not that they can't be beautiful but this being at peak popularity during the reign of Bright Eyes in the emo scene... over emphasis on lyrics has always kind of put a bad taste in my mouth due to how try hard Bright Eyes always was... highschool journal keeper music. Not exactly deep.
