"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" was produced by Robert Schneider at Pet Sounds Studio in Denver from July to September 1997. Schneider used Neumann U 87 microphones to capture Jeff Mangum's distinctive acoustic guitar sound and relied on heavy compression and microphone distortion to create the album's unique "warm" quality. Despite Mangum's preference for distorted sounds, standard effects were avoided in favor of innovative techniques. Vocals were strongly processed with autotune, adding an ethereal layer without compromising emotional rawness. Schneider also wrote the horn arrangements, collaborating closely with trombonist Rick Benjamin and trumpeter Scott Spillane to blend melancholic and chaotic elements.
