This song never ever gets old because it's less appealing for a catchy melody and more appealing for incredible lyrics. Lyrics that you could repeat over and over and over and over again and they never stop resonating with you on an understanding and personal level. This is one of the greatest songs ive ever heard lyric-wise, it's poetry. Every line is special and meaningful, and the message is just so human- in terms of being a bad person and hating yourself, hating everyone else, knowing that you don't understand anything and desperately wanting to. It's the acknowledgment that life is suffering and nothing cares about you and you can't understand why. It's humble and self-destructive and a bit angry and that's what folkpunk kinda is at its core. I find this song works best with the contexts of their other songs like "People" and "Survival Song" and "Rejoice", because all of AJJ's songs together seem to tell a story of "the world is a horrible place to live and people are hateful and selfish and we all want to die, but somehow we don't and we keep on living, and somehow we find good things despite it all."
@josephschultz33019 ай бұрын
To me, what makes this so terribly upsetting, is that unlike a lot of other "weird dudes with a guitar" kind of music is the fact that I've seen Sean live and he's _uncomfortably_ sincere. This isn't just him preaching. These are the actual awful thoughts in his head. That both makes this song so much worse _and_ so much better. If that makes any sense.

She came out just to put me my heart on strings again, to tell me that she misinterpreted my compassion as love, and to shame me for being compassionate to the world

Does it bother anyone else that it is your sympathetic nervous system and not your parasympathetic nervous system that is in charge of fight or flight response?

I always thought that was the point. I interpreted it as your body desprately wanting rest but your in fight or flight.

Loved this song/band so much when I was in high school. In retrospect, that Mrs. Robinson verse is horrifically embarrassing.

Parts of this song sound so similar to GG Allin's "When I die".

Theres a little scientific mistake in this song the parasympathetic nervous sistem doesnt spark a fight or flight response its actually the sympathetic🤓
