thank you for the tips it was the NSSwitch that was giving me the problem..I did forgot to disconnect the battery when installing the nnswitch. It would not start so i disconnected the battery and after 10 mins, I connected the battery and turn the key forward and left it turned for 5 mins and it reprogram itself and started right up.. Thank you again..

Thank you for this video I recently bought a 97 Silverado , and the truck has caught me off in public and would not start, very embarrassing that I would have to crawl under the truck and short across the starter to crank it. I even had thought the neutral safety switch was actually on the column like the old ones.

Good video. One great tip - heat the electrical connections before trying to take them off. Two or three minutes with a hair dryer on its hottest setting is sufficient. You don't need a heat gun and probably don't want to use a torch. Worked like a charm. Also, when reinstalling, reheat the plugs and sockets a bit to resoften the adhesive. Makes plugging them in easier and resells them. Thanks for posting this.

@FoxInSoxx28 well I found out that I installed everything correctly. I was just fortunate enough that my cable was old and broke just from the little bit of movement it had. So after replacing the shift cable it works just fine and I have backups. It should also be noted the plugs for this switch is glued in which is what makes them so tough to remove. I had to crack the plastic around the plug to get mine free as well.

Working on a 95 Cheyenne right now. Replaces the starter a few months ago bc I had issues. Then I put a alternator on it this afternoon before learning about a safety switch. I will try to change from park and neutral then loosen and wiggle the switch. I have a new one but I was told I should try to wiggle first then replace it if it wont start.

@FoxInSoxx28 Thanks again for the tips. I did try to check the wires but didn't encounter any problems, so I replaced the NSS. Still no back up lights, however now I don't have the indicator PRND321 lights on my dash to indicate what gear I'm in?? What did I do to screw that up? did check the fuses too. Everything else is as it was before the NSS replacement. Car shifts as it should, as well. Thanks.

I know this is an old post but it maybe helpful to somebody. The problem you described sounds like there is a lot of junk in the pan, when you first start it up it gets sucked up into the filter, eventually blocking the flow of oil. Thus the reason why it moves for the first few minutes. When it's shut down, the convertor drains back and the junk flushes into the bottom of the pan and the process repeats.

TBH I'm not sure. sold this truck about 8 years ago and I owned the automatic trans model. The NSS did link up to the transmission cable and I believe it did relay gear info for lights, but I'm not sure how that linkage works in the manual version. good luck on finding out! and please let us know if you figure it out just in case someone else comes here with the same issue.

@tde83 could be the NSS in the 98 models there is a lt green wire that runs from the NSS to the reverse lamps, not sure what color wire is going into the switch is off the top of my head, but a haynes manual or exterior electrical chart will solve that. I suggest starting there: apply the parking brake, drop it in reverse and check to see if you are getting signal with the incoming wire with a multimeter, if yes and no signal is coming out the NSS it's a pretty good bet.

the electrical connectors at the nss are glued in place. you need to heat them up to get them to release, a mini torch or just something that will apply heat will work. just don't burn it.

the likely reason the electrical plugs were difficult to remove is because there was some factory clear colored adhesive on the electrical plugs. makes plug removal VERY difficult. in your case, it's what likely caused your switch to break. not sure why that adhesive was on there, but I've come across several with it on late model GM trucks. perhaps it's to keep the colored sealing rings in place. if so, looks like they used too much I use something like carb cleaner to clean the glue
@foxinsoxx
@foxinsoxx 13 жыл бұрын
@tde5 sound like a wiring issue and pinpointing exactly where it's coming from could take some more testing or a mechanic. I'm 99% sure that the signal going to your column indicators comes from the NSS, but it could just be turning onto one of those old trucks with old quirks. If worse comes to worse, One suggestion is to wire a toggle switch in your cab directly to your reverse lights and not worry about the NSS control at all.
@codyduda7804

you are meant to heat up the plugs on safety switch before pulling them out with heat gun or blow dryer
@foxinsoxx
@foxinsoxx 12 жыл бұрын
sorry for the late response, hopefully you fixed your issue: the reverse lights are controlled be the NSS, the turn signals are a different switch. I've never done this on a manual truck, so would love to hear any insights if it differs but to my understanding the depression of the clutch is mostly what the NSS is making up for in the automatic trans. most important thing is disconnect your battery, don't run the risk of hurting yourself or creating more work by damaging other electronics

Don't have to disconnect the battery,you will call the dealer for the radio code.Will read lock and the radio won't work.To get the plug ins out,use a heat gun to get the plugs out.They are glued in from the factory

@JUDGERAMBO still trying to figure out what's causing my problem. The truck will not crank at all but if i wait a day or two after running it, it cranks fine. I was told by several mechanics that it could be one of several problems and received a giant list of possible solutions... If your NSS is bad, your starter will not receive a signal from the relay, so there will be no crank at all in neutral or park. It is a safety feature to make sure you don't start your car in gear.

@FoxInSoxx28 ahhh yeah found out that the little bit of messing around cause the cable to stretch and break I can't shift any higher than D3 and can't shift back down at all. So I'm fixing the cable this friday. I guess it was a stroke of luck that my cable snapped for me lol. But at least I have backup lights now lol.

@tde83 before you do that, trace the lt. green wire from the NSS to the tail lights, could also be where the wire splits to hit both L and R lights has disconnected. Then all you need is a coupler and some electrical tape :) good luck.

If the connectors dont pull out with a gentle pull its because a sealant was used inside the connectors. You have to use a heat gun to CAREFULLY heat each connector and they will slide right out. You will also have to heat the male connectors to reinsert them into the switch. Also, the switch inner ring has a line up. This is the neutral position. With the shift shaft in the neutral position the switch will slide right on and will not need further adjustment.

Over the last 2 weeks in my home garage I replaced every seal in my 03 Suburban, oil pan, rear pan, crank and cam sensor, oil pressure switch, rear main, cooler line block gasket, rear head freeze plugs (both sides), rebuild transfer case (bad bearing) and cleaned all the mess the leaks had made. Well I go to crank her over nothing? I remembered all this gunk on the 2 neutral safety switches, so i take a sewing needle and clean the female connect a little bit and then plugged it in and she fired right up. So I let it run for an hr, no leaks I almost did a back flip but for the fact im out of shape and could never do one anyways, but when I go start a test drive and put it in D it shoots to 2 and the other gears werent showing on the dash. I ran to Oreilly's and bought some electrical cleaner and some tiny wire brushes and clean the heck out of the male and female leads. Well try after try its 12:30am and I got all gear to read on the dash as I shift they match up but I go to drive and I got weak power to no power and vehicle cuts off. Earlier when I first got it started I only had P, 3rd and I reversed all the way thru the alley perfect but now reverse cuts off the engine? Help!! I have put 40 to 50hrs Im desperate! Thanks!

sounds like it's not a problem with the NSS, but the cable leading from your shifter to the transmission (the NSS bridges off this connection). of you make adjustments to the NSS, you actually can re-install the shifter cable upside-down which will leave you shifting to the wrong gear.

Thanks for the quick reply ill take a look at all your advice on that... the guy at the shop told me limited information because he knows ill probably fix it if he'd tell me i guess its buisness right. He told me the transmission is fine and the 4x4 is fine. But i dont understand what he means by i have a short and two cables in the harness are stuck together and he would charge me 350 to fix it its kinda irritating because i payed to know what my problem is and he didnt clarify it 100 % . Ill look around for other places but when i find the actuall problem i hope my solution helps more people on youtube... next time ill just get a ride to work and take my battery to get charged at kragen. Anyways thank you for your reply and advice.

@Raybajosexto007 could be, or just could be a bad connection in the electrical in general. Start by getting a multimeter and a wiring digram and test your connections. the diagram will give you the colors of wires you should be looking for. jack the car up, apply the parking break, put it in drive... if you have a no crank issue, use the multimeter to check that you are getting signal from the wire that runs to your starter relay switch. other problems could be your starter switch or keylock.

@evilcowboy the alignment issue could be from installing the arm that connects to the NSS backwards. You should be able to rotate the arm all the way forward and push the shifter into park and everything will align. As far as battery, by not disconnecting you run several risks, worst being personal injury by electric current or damaging other electronic components or connections by shorting your wires.

that's a tough one... if it is the NSS, the cable from the shifter will be loose. it might be an issue inside the transmission. did it sputter/grind before it died or does it seem like the truck is just stuck in neutral?
@foxinsoxx
@foxinsoxx 13 жыл бұрын
@tde5 could be a bad replacement NSS or the wires were not pushed in securely. i'm actually shocked that your truck is running with the bad switch installed, it's actually not supposed to start without a verified signal from the NSS. The switch tells the dash what gear to light up, that's why alignment is key, once you have signal going to your dash, you'd be able to figure out if it is misaligned. If I had to guess, you ended up with a bad replacement switch or you need to recheck your wires.

Hi and thanks for the video. I have a 1996 k1500 that is having starting issues. I replaced the starter/solenoid, the engine chassis’s grounds were pretty bad so I replaced those. Along with the starter going bad my truck also blew the 40amp ignition fuse and starter relay. I replaced those and tried again but they blew. My next attempt is replacing my ignition switch, but that seems to test right with my multi meter. I was going to try the neutral safety switch also. Any ideas. I sure could use some help. None of my mechanic friends want to touch electrical

check that the leads from the positive terminal on the battery are all receiving proper voltage. I have a video on this channel on how to cut out all the rubber that causes general starting issues. also re-wire the lead to the starter with a brand new wire... there could be corrosion or a stripped section grounding to the frame somewhere along the lead.

@FoxInSoxx28 Hi again - I noticed yesterday the tailgate trunk latch/release button no longer works. As a safety feature, it does not pop the trunk unless the truck is off and/or in park, so I'm guessing this means I DID install the NSS incorrectly, but I'm not sure what I did wrong. As I mentioned previously, the indicator lights under the PRND are out after NSS replacement. Is it possible the NSS wasn't "all the way" in neutral when I installed it or the plugs not re-inserted all the way?

sounds like it could be one of many problems, my suggestions will be a shot in the dark but i suggest a mechanic. could be an issue with the drive train, maybe transmission is not engaging, could be a security lockout, could be a general computer failure, best case scenario... your shifter cable snapped and needs to be replaced, so check its connection on the NSS - you'll know if you can move the lever by hand from below while the column shifter remains in park. Does the engine run well?

I have been watching quite a few videos on the steering column trying to figure out what could have happened. I have an 88 chevy The wheel does not lock in when the key is pulled out which is not that big of a deal, but I always have to turn my wheel to find that sweet spot so the ignition will turn. When I was working on the oil line and was easier separating the column. Everything looks fine in the top end. Could this be the switch or the lock cylinder? I can't find a video on those either.

Earl, above your brake pedal there is a switch thats going out,, Its about $10, and the Switch in the Video above Isn't actually a Neutral Safety Switch, Its a manual lever position switch), or MLPS, it requires two 12 mm wrenches and two 15 mm wrenches,, All it does is communicate with the transmission to let it know what gear you shift lever is in, This is why some people refer to it as A Neutral safety switch, being a component of that system is just one of its jobs

Hey i saw your video and im currently in doubt to what my problem is... heres what happened to me. I left my key on the ignition all night so when i woke up i had to go to work. So i had to push it back on neutral to jump it. The thing is i jumped it and my wife never changed the gears from neutral to park so she started it in neutral or tried to but couldnt it sounded still dead so i waited for a charge n then i noticed the gear wasnt in park so i put it in park n it started perfectly only......... Now the 4x4 selector switch lights all light up but i cant switch from 4hi to 2hi or anything. It makes a scraping noise after 15 mph. I wonder could this be that neutral safety switch bad...? I took it to the shop they charge me 350 to fix it and said it was a wire harness but i dont trust shops they rip u off for small stuff...

I don't have a 4x4 model, so i'm only throwing out guesses here. Could be that you knocked up something in your 4wd transfer case when you did the neutral jump start, or knocked around something with your transmission. does the grinding sound like its coming from the transmission? or maybe you popped something in the differential? the sensors go buggy when that stuff is off and they are very intricate gear systems. I'm not sure that the NSS does any controlling of the of the 4WD though. It's main job is to be a safety gateway between the starter switch and the starting mechanism… so you don't start the truck in gear. the 4WD may bridge off of the NSS if your truck does not offer switching on the fly. I hope all of this made some sense. The NSS a fairly cheap fix so it's worth a try, but i would find out where that grinding is coming from, that could be triggering a sensor that inhibits your 4WD for safety reasons, I'd hate to hear that you dropped a transmission or blew out a differential or transfer case. look for leaking fluid underneath or around those areas ASAP.

When I put it in gear to go it won't move I put it in all the years and it won't move I put it in reverse to see if it was reading and my reverse lights came on but will not move, so I tested another therory out and put it in neutral and tried to start it would not start! I more than likely didn't have the right box wrench at the time... or it was lost in the bottom of some random tool bag in the corner of my garage... HA! This was the first vehicle I owned where I decided, "I'm going to fix things on my own"... with a random assortment of barely enough tools and the dedication to get it done. a decade later, I have acquired more of the right tools for the job. but as far as respect goes... I'm pretty happy I decided to step out of that comfort zone. it's saved me thousands in repairs and opened up a whole new understanding on cars in general... maybe that's worth something to you, maybe it isn't, either way hope this video helped your personal repair in some way... that was the intention.

Have your truck scanned and see if 02 sensors pop up. If they are bad they will act like your transmission wants to slip and buck. Also clogged catalytic converters. Clogged cats can ruin the 02 sensors. Ask me how I know lol just had mine rebuilt and took it back to the shop pissed off and they scanned it and said that was my problem. Also google the symptoms of bad 02 sensors and bad catalytic converters. You’ll see what I mean. Hope this helps.

i have an 2005 tahoe with 4x4, would this switch cause the vehicle to go into neutral while it's in drive, and to fix it, i have to pull over put the shift selector in neutral and then press one of the 4x4 buttons (doesnt matte) then push it back into 2wd and it drives fine again, until it decides to do it again, would this switch be the cause of it????

potentially, this switch is the main electrical connection between your shifter and the transmission. there could also be an issue with the cable running down to the NSS. Sorry for the late response, Hope you were able to figure something out.

Mr.Ajd1982, have you had your Tahoe scanned for codes? Does your display indicated a four wheel drive malfunction? Your problem is most likely the switch located on the transfercase. You need a scan tool that can scan for codes other then engine codes, it most likely has a C code stored for the transfercase.

Bryan Russell it ended up being the encoder motor sensor, which is inside the encoder motor itself and is attached to the transfer case, yea, swapped out for a new one from advance auto parts, (about 270.00 bucks) and hasn't done it since, not a tough job actually, if your pretty mechanically inclined, for the '05 tahoe at least you will need to remove the front drive shaft to get to one of the 3 bolts (of course lol) and then just unbolt, unplug and reverse order for the new one, but one thing i learned, make sure the input shaft going into the encoder motor is lined up correctly and sits flush against the transfer case, before you tighten the bolts, it's a little pain at first but it will line up and go in all the way

what was causing the problem to make you change your nss because I have reverse only, no forward gears engage at all, only reverse

I had starter issues, and a simple replacement starter didn't fix the problem. i had replaced the starter switch, starter, and NSS before the system was working again. You have to consider that the youngest of these vehicles is now 19 years old, that's a lot of wear and tear on all parts. if you plan to keep it around for many years, if one part of a system starts to show signs of significant wear, it's a good idea to just replace the whole circuit. For your issue, start by checking your spring and cable running down to the NSS, it could just be a bad cable. worst case scenario is a bad transmission.

Go buy a button and about 5-6ft of wire and just wire in a push to start. It's only 1 wire, very quick and painless.

Is it just me, or doesn't anyone understand what a neutral safety switch is? Usually, they're under the dash, mounted on the steering column. I'm about to check mine, and this video is misleading. And I did just crawl under my 1993, and it is on the column. GMT 400 series trucks (like his), run from 88-98.

your 93 would be a different setup. I believe they started putting them on the underside like this around 95-96.

I stand corrected. You may be right. And the sw on my column may "not" be the safety sw, but the rev. lights. I don't know at this point. The wires look too small, and are the wrong color for a neutral safety sw. I need to find a diagram.

@evilcowboy the alignment issue could be from installing the arm that connects to the NSS backwards. You should be able to rotate the arm all the way forward and push the shifter into park and everything will align. As far as battery, by not disconnecting you run several risks, worst being personal injury by electric current or damaging other electronic components or connections by shorting your wires.

can the safety switch on my transfer case stop my blazer from starting? used to start in neutral. now just turns over but won't start at all..
@foxinsoxx
@foxinsoxx 8 жыл бұрын
+Angela Valdez Turns over as in cranks but won't start? If the NSS is working, it won't allow the starter to crank in gear, so if it is cranking in neutral, the NSS is doing it's job. the problem may depend on how old the car is... sounds like it could be anything from a bad battery, to a bad starter cable, to a bad starter. If it's an older truck, it could very well be a worn out starter, start by removing the starter and getting it tested at a local auto parts store. If the truck is around 15 years old, it would be a good idea to run a new starter cable too.
