To fair this has been happening for a long time,it's just now the assault has been accelerated,I remember doing my bachelors in East Africa and we constantly critisiced the government of the day and their foreign policy,when I decided to study in europe to my shock I found out there were issues and subjects that were a taboo especially since Europe was marketed to us as more democratic and tolerant,I immediately came to the conclusion that back in my University although not perfect but education expression had low if no restrictions.Academic expression should be free and fair to allow students to challenge each other and come with solutions, Education must not be made to be another bubble or coping mechanism.

Thank you for this video, I am currently struggling with this very issue 🙏🙏 This afternoon, I just skimmed through the alumni newsletter from a European University I used to attend (mind you, this is the European country that used to colonise my country). All I felt was a sense of dread & second-hand embarrassment as I cringed through Sinophobic retoric, some First World “protest” about education, and ZERO acknowledgement of the fact that Palestinians are being unfairly punished for the Holocaust they're commemorating.... Just very, very disappointing. 🍉💔 Especially after the Islamophobic media propaganda in Amsterdam exposed & even the mayor of Amsterdam backpeddled. They're turning a blind eye on everything-Apartheid, genocide, prejudice-it feels more like conservative media than a newsletter coming out of a critical-thinking academic institution. They're known for their International Law programmes too. And now I'm questioning everything I studied/experienced there & everything I was guided to do there too-I feel betrayed and brainwashed in the worst possible way as somebody from a former colony. You know it's a worthless degree when it's no longer about HOW to think but more about WHAT to think. I feel like distancing myself & “starting a new life”, starting fresh 🍃 and just pretending I never studied/lived there, it's utterly shameful.

The end of academic freedom is not a singular phenomenon. It is part of the restrictions, if not the end of freedom of expression that can be observed especially in the "western" world. It goes to the extreme of banning citizens of the EU from entering particular countries of the EU as is the case with Yanis Varoufakis, a Greek citizen, politician and academic, who is still banned from entering Germany. It reaches as far as military experts in the USA, Canada, the UK and the EU being shunned and excluded from publicly expressing their opinions that are based on personal experience and scholarly research. The term "freedom" has become a sad joke.
