I wish all instructors would teach swim without a mask; I've never heard of that and it makes so much sense to help divers not panic when their mask gets knocked off or they have to defog it underneath.

COMMON MISTAKE. At 3:38, the SPG is put face down with a hand behind it. In modern SPG's the safety valve in the back would blow if overpressured, unlike old ones where the glass would probably shatter. So, it's the back of the gauge we need to point away from "targets" as it is the most likely cause of injury.

Great video guys but just one thing on the CESA - we have been told here in Thailand that swimming diagonally from the deep end of the pool to the shallow end does not meet the standards for CESA of swimming horizontally so we have been told not to teach our DM's and particularly IDC Candidtates this way. Also, a PADI examiner recently told me that the skill should not be finished on the surface with oral inflation. My personal opinion is that I prefer your way of demonstrating but just passing on what I have been told by somebody that should know!
@Utiladivecenter
@Utiladivecenter 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, unfortunately it is inaccurate. The diagonal CESA is more realistic and sufficient to meet standards, as is the horizontal CESA. Again in reality the skill is finished on the surface with oral inflation in reality, and it is allowed to be practiced and performed like this to meet the standards in the pool. I would recommend you contact PADI Asia Pacific for further clarification.
@TheDiveAcademy
@TheDiveAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
This information came from Asia Pacific's and probably the whole of PADI's most experienced Examiner worldwide so I'm pretty certain it's not inaccurate. According to him diagonal does not meet the standard for swimming horizontal which is why the biggest IDC's and IE's in the world are not conducted this way on his say so. Like I said I prefer the diagonal demo but it clearly doesn't meet the standards which state horizontal and certainly here in Thailand candidates will be penalised if they perform the skill this way

Air depletion exercise and alternate air source use: NEVER leave tank valve closed when you close your students valve. You have to open it again when gauge points zero - after that you change to donator's alternate air source.
@Utiladivecenter
@Utiladivecenter 8 жыл бұрын
Either or works, it is an out of air drill and prepares student for realism, hence why conducted in shallow water initially.
@hskoffice8432
@hskoffice8432 8 жыл бұрын
In real world, only in 1st stage failure (total blockage) will make the same feeling like you shut off tank valve. Of course this is just an exercise, perhaps more like psychological feeling about out-of-air situation, but for safety reasons you have to ALWAYS open the valve again, regardless of whether the water is shallow or not. NEVER leave student in the water with tank valve closed. PADI Training Standards says: "Reopen the valve as the diver secures the buddy´s alternate so the regulator again becomes available to use".
@Utiladivecenter
@Utiladivecenter 8 жыл бұрын
The standard is "Respond to air depletion by signaling out-of-air.” If conducting this exercise as a stand alone then the tank would immediately be opened (as stated in recommendations in the Guide to Teaching, not a standard in the Instructor manual). If combining with alternate air source use as in the demonstration, then it is sufficient to breathe from the alternate and either open the tank immediately, or at the surface.
@hskoffice8432
@hskoffice8432 8 жыл бұрын
You are right, I have PADI standards here and also Guide to Teaching. ;) But if there´s real out-of-air situation, the regulator comes very difficult to breath when tank pressure comes close to mid pressure of regulator, which is normally 9-10 bars, depending of the reg model. So this exercise is useless if used to show how out of air situation feels. But there´s few other exercises too in Padi guidelines which are also useless when diving after courses or how to deal in various situations.
@hskoffice8432
@hskoffice8432 8 жыл бұрын
But my opinion to the open-or-closed tank valve question is that I would never leave student in-water situation with closed tank valve. IF something happens, how you explain that "ok, I left the valve closed in this exercise and the student drowned because he/she went to the bottom without air and bc empty..."

Regarding point #8: Mask clearing, I have always had to do this one completely blind because I wear contact lenses. Are there alternative Methods that would be better suited for people with contact lenses? I also can't go without lenses because my eyesight is too bad.
@Utiladivecenter
@Utiladivecenter 7 жыл бұрын
You could always look into purchasing a prescriptive lens mask.
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 7 жыл бұрын
+ Magdalena Moss -- The method shown works just as well if you have your eyes closed to hold in your contacts. You still exhale through your nose to displace the water with air, and still tilt your head up/back to to get the last of the water out through the lower mask seal. The only difference is that with your eyes closed you aren't "looking up," just "facing up." (And if your mask has a purge valve in the nose, you don't even look/face up; you keep facing down so the last of the water goes into the nose and out the purge valve.)
@carlosandleon
@carlosandleon 7 жыл бұрын
Magdalena Moss doing it blind shouldn't be a problem. You just need more practice.
@timblomeke5249
@timblomeke5249 7 жыл бұрын
You don't have to close your eyes to keep the contacts in; squinting is enough. Some people prefer contacts to presription lenses because they want to be able to take their mask off and still see clearly.
@ltcduggins
@ltcduggins 6 жыл бұрын
This - this is a big part of why I had LASIK. I lost too many disposable contacts, and I thought dummy-cording an expensive mask with prescription ground lenses to be too cumbersome. It worked for me; it may not work for you I also added a backup frameless mask in my BCD pocket later on, but that was long after I solved this problem
@pbillings808

11:36 - If you are "perfect" with empty BC and a full tank as demonstrated, you will be UNDER weighted by about 5 lb when the tank is at reserve level (assuming 80 cf tank).

Neutral buoyancy isn't a skill, it's a habit. - This really is what recreational skill demos ought to look like; very nicely done. Unfortunately, in these parts (Asia) we still see mostly the old kneeling-on-the-bottom style of teaching, all the way up to IE.
