Hey Kenny--the beauty of a layering system is that you build a kit that works for a wide range of temps. If I remember correctly, these guys were seeing 60-70 F during the day, and 30-ish during the night.

Is there a video showing someone sitting up in the ultra star? seems like the way the roof is angled you would be rubbing your right shoulder against the tent sitting up, I'm on the fence if I can get away with the ultra or if I want to do a 2p, worried about being too cramped in the 1p

+Marcus Wehmeyer You'll touch the side a little when sitting up, but there's plenty of height and length. Most of the time, you'll cook while laying on your side. Best place to sit up is in the door, with your feet in the vestibule area. Like Todd said...we don't go hunting to be pampered!

First off I love your guys gear. Kuiu really is the best quality and functionality all around. But I have to ask since everything is wet and drying off does that mean that the tents were unable to handle the consistent rain?

It had more to do with the condensation on the single wall tents in this case. They're a little less moisture-resistant than the 2P, which is a double wall. If you know you're going to be in consistently rainy conditions, a single-wall tent isn't the one to bring no matter what--a double wall does a better job in general, but has a weight penalty. So it's a balance.

+anthony crumley Weight-wise, the Super Down pieces give us warmer layering options with less weight. If things get really cold, we'd rather layer the jacket over the zip-t, rather than having one down piece and something else that weighs the same but is less warm.

Hey Craig - the UltraNX is more waterproof and more breathable-it's made with a more expensive specialty fabric, and is very high-performance. The Teton is a touch lighter, but has waterproof fabric more on par with what you'd find at a typical retailer--fine for most situations but not as good as our higher end rain gear. If you hunt in areas and times where rain gear is usually not important, that's the one to get. If you need higher performance but still want to cut weight, the UltraNX is the way to go.

KUIU Ultralight Hunting thank you. Sounds like I'll get the UltraNX. And just to reiterate, they are both only the most outer layer order? Regular jacket flies over the insulation layer, then if needed you put on the final rain layer. Correct?

If you plan to wear insulation only while glassing, you can size up and wear over your soft shell. But if you plan to hike with insulation, you'll wear inside your shell. And yes, rain gear goes on the outside!

Kuiu clothing sized very small vs other brands. Sitka fits better in my opinion. Kuiu packs are sick tho. Love my 1850.

I noticed one wore vias and one wore verde and were hunting same area. Is this purely preference on what each of you like? I'm trying to decide on Camo pattern and at this time can't afford both patterns

It's mostly preference when hunting ungulates, especially in the mountains; both patterns handle rock, trees, and shrub extremely well. The Verde might have a slight edge where it's less rocky and more green, but the Vias is still a bit more contrasty.

Good info in this video. Question about the boots. How'd they perform? Are they stiffer than the Gran Dru? I also hunt Nevada, and was wearing my old Lowa Renegades last year, packing my deer out of steep country. Pulled my groin badly, probably due to slipping with a heavy pack and no real ankle support in the boots. Found a pair of the Charmoz for a steal on REI (sorry Kuiu, it was cheaper) but have only seen a few reviews online for hunting applications. Knowing Nevada mule deer and elk country, what do you think?

The Charmoz is still quite stiff on the rear three quarters of the boot, with plenty of ankle support, but has some flex in the toe box. It's a fantastic all-around boot, and would work great for the application you're looking at. The Grand DRU GTX is stiffer across the whole sole, so it's better for really extreme country, but harder to use in rolling hills.

"not a vacation ... luxury at home" That is luxury, for me. Everday clothing more in line with going to the gym. I expect to get cold, but after several hours my body acclamates. Regular boots and a rain poncho. Top end Nikon bios or spotting scope and a bow with a some arrows. Rifle is way too easy...

There was a lot of rain and fog the day prior; while rain isn't as big an issue, fog is a huge drag because of the condensation.
