My grandfather was a Conductor on the NN Ry between the late 1920s to 1940s, and he worked on the school trains that were pulled by #40. When my grandparents were married, they honeymooned on (Pres.) Jackling's private car "Cypress". Many of my grandfather's photos of the NN Ry. are in the Arcadia published book on the railroad.

@@michaelwolters3592 Yes, there were no schools in Ely. The schools were 12 miles north of Ely at McGill, NV. McGill is where the concentraters and smelter were to process the copper ore. The children from Ely rode the train to McGill to go to school every day.

40 was originally gonna be pulled from service just days from now but last week they Nevada northern announced that the FRA/federal railroad administration has allowed an extension for 40 to continue running til late October of this year and after that she'll be pulled for real this time for her next rebuild and I'm not sure if this might happen before or after she's pulled but Nevada northern 81 might return but only time will tell when but for now let's be happy 40 has 5 more months to run til her next rebuild. So want to see her before that rebuild but I'll see what happens since none of us even know when the quarantine will end

Great shots, especially doubheading. I have a long time question. When one or more engines pass through a tunnel, how do the crew handle the smoke packed in such a little space?

It's a rather elaborate technique of closing the cab windows and covering the face with a cloth

For what seems like the longest time, I have wanted to take a trip out to Ely, Nevada to take a trip on this train and see the museum. I'm a little afraid to travel over that part of Highway 50 by myself in a car though. Are there any buses that go into Ely?
@Vincent_Sullivan3 жыл бұрын
I have been to Ely several times to volunteer working at maintaining, repairing, and restoring the locomotives or anything else they want me to work on. I have always driven (though I come from the North down highway 93) because when I researched the issue in 2017 I found there was no commercial plane, train, or bus service to Ely. Ely is supposedly the most isolated town of any size in the continental US. If highway 50 is anything like Highway 93 though, it really isn't a bad drive. Barring Winter weather the roads are in good shape. Traffic is light but there is some so if you have a breakdown somebody will be along without waiting too long. I do take some extra food, water, and fuel just to have more options available in case of a problem but I have never had to use them.
