NEVCO basketball scoreboard

It is hard to think of this scoreboard as old when it doesn't seem to be electromechanical like boards were when I was in school. This thing is totally silent when the clock runs or when the digits are changed. The digit style is such that 8 bits can be used to represent them. The 2 and 4 are made the way that practically all scoreboards make them now so they can get away with 8 segments of lights. Scoreboards used to have controllers with buttons for each score digit, a minutes reset button, and a clock run/stop button and you got a nice clunk each time you changed a digit and you heard the mechanism as the clock ran. Different scoreboard manufacturers made their digits in different ways and the older boards had their quirks and personalities.

Old is a relative term....this is mostly 1970s technology. Although my 1976 pinball machine, which is one of the last EM machines seems much older.

3Cr15w311 I would date this model as probably sometime in the early 1990s, maybe even later. My high school which opened in 1992 had a Nevco scoreboard that looked very similar (different color paint but the digits and fixtures looked identical to the one in this video) and had an almost identical controller (in fact I remember the prompt about wanting to resume where you left off when plugging in the controller). I helped run it for some practices back in the day.

I was basing the 1970s date on the date codes on the electronic parts inside. I expect they made the same design well into the 90s.

I am guessing by the 1990s they switched from electromechanical to digital electronic chips, probably some sort of counters and segment drivers and then most likely some kind of SCRs or Triacs, or high power output transistors to switch the lights. I am guessing that the clock probably uses a crystal oscillator of some kind or a dedicated timing circuit IC that is very accurate. It is possible that they could use a divide by 60 counter on the AC line or a 555 circuit for the seconds but this would seem less accurate. It is also possible that this is CPU based too.

From what I know, this particular Nevco controller dates from the 90s. The board itself may be older, but will run with newer controllers. The older controller had a 7 segment LED or VFD display. The newer ones like this one has a dot matrix display and keeps 10th of seconds in the last 10 minutes. The board will display tenths in the last minute. Curiously the model code is one digit different for boards that display tenths (at least for basketball) 610 4732 versus 612 4732. Dont ask me how I know this... I must have timekept a lot of basketball in the late 80s and early 90s lol

It has a horn in it, which came with it, so my guess is that it's a scoreboard horn...????
