I make sure I drop my thumb on the spool before my lure hits the water. I have pretty good luck with it. Not going to lie tho, I have blown it up so bad I just put the rod back in the rod rack and fish with another rod😊😂

I'm not great with a baitcaster, I've been raised on spinning reels. However, when the lure hits the water, the resistance increases, and if you don't stop the spool at that point, you pretty well can guarantee a backlash. I don't have much trouble with a full cast, it's those more delicate short casts that get me. And I've never seen any professional fisherman change magnets or brakes every time they change lures. Maybe they do but I haven't seen it.

Great video. I wish I had known all of this advice when I bought my first baitcaster. It would’ve saved me many hours of frustration trying to dig loose bird-nested line.
@teetimeaz
@teetimeaz 11 күн бұрын
A major reason for birds nesting is due to line tightness on the spool. After casting and retrieving without tension the line is loose. Then when you snag debris or a fish you will cause the outer spool line to tighten over the spooled line. During a future cast the line will not clear the spool uniformly. I always on a retrieve place a hand in front of my reel and covering the line.
@WisGuy4

If you do get a birdsnest, here’s a trick to help untangle it: put your thumb down hard on the spool and then turn the crank about five or six times. Then press the release button and start pulling loose line. This can untangle light bird nests on the first try. With worse birdsnests, you may need to repeat a few times.

This is the method I use, and for me, heavier mono is easier to do this with than other lines. 20 pound mono makes this easy.

Thanks Randy for this video. Excellent tips on backlash. I haven't used my baitcaster reel as much because of the backlash problem. I will try these tips. Thanks again.

You adjust the tension on your spool after you tie on your lure. Hold the rod at a 45 degree angle and press and release the thumb release and allow the spool to free spin until the lure hits the floor. The spool should STOP turning when the lure hits the floor. Your tension is set and for any casts your thumb stay near the spool to feather the cast as needed.

I’ve also seen pros recommend that the spool is held vertical rather than horizontal when casting. I’ve found that it seems to help.

I taught my son when he was 7 years old how to cast a bait caster by setting it up and then pulling off about 20 yards of line then put a piece of tape on then reel line back on and as he got use to it I moved the tape to 50 yards and so on But it helps a lot . But you can take a cast your farthest cast then pull off a few more yards then put tape on and if you do back lash it will only go down to the tape . And there is nothing wrong with using this method and besides Bill Dance showed this method of using tape about 30 years ago

Randy would you still use a spinning rod for jerkbaits around big bass, I live in no cal and any cast could be 12 lbs or bigger?
@WisGuy4
@WisGuy4 12 күн бұрын
Why not, if the rod is an appropriate weight. Most people fishing for salmon, steelhead or ocean fish use spinning outfits to catch fish that easily could exceed 12 pounds, and that fight much harder than any largemouth bass that’s ever lived.

A piece of electrical tape on the spool just a few inches past your longest cast will help.

I've heard of this too. But what happens if you hook a fish at the end of your longest cast and he pulls out more line? Has that ever happened to you? Just curious.

What causes a lot of backlashes is because a lot of people don’t know how to set up their reel. On the other sometimes it takes some coordination too.

Why not mention the magnetic settings along with the break. Did not show how to use them together. Very important not to set the magnet at 1. Better to start at 5 or 6 and adjust from there.
@rwhanks
@rwhanks 12 күн бұрын
Agreed, set magnets at middle setting, then fine tune after setting brake.
@jefferytodd3265
@jefferytodd3265 12 күн бұрын
@@rwhanks Agree with both. I'll add, adjust magnets if the spool backlashes early in the cast. Adjust tension if it's late in the cast, or after it hits the water. Learning this years ago changed everything for me.
