Never-Before-Seen Footage of Jimmie Rodgers?

A couple of additional notes: this footage consists of outtakes, so it's possible that Rodgers was given more attention in the released newsreel, but I wouldn't know how to go about locating a copy, if one exists at all. And to all those commenting that it's Will Rogers and not Jimmie Rodgers; yes, Will Rogers is indeed the main subject of the film, however the character identified as Jimmie can be seen behind him in the background, and is specifically highlighted in the video at 00:49, 03:37, and 04:27, and with a close-up still at 03:44.

I read somewhere where Jimmie toured with Will Rodgers . They did benefits for people who were affected by the Dust Bowl. I don’t doubt for one minute that was Jimmie. It’s a wonder Will didn’t have him come up and talk to him also.

Will Rogers was known by all segments of society. I wonder if Jimmie Rodgers was known by the majority of Americans. I doubt if any of my relatives in Pennsylvania ever heard of him. But this was Texas so you might expect him to be interviewed. Of course, there are no recorded interviews of Jimmie, as far as I know. This is exciting film to me.

Yes, that is the figure presumed to be Rodgers. This footage was shot in San Antonio, Texas, no more than a day or two before they were photographed together at Blue Yodeler's Paradise in Kerrville.

It certainly looks very much like Jimmie. Given his enormous popularity by 1931, though, I find it very surprising that he was neither mentioned by Will Rogers nor given any media attention at this event. If I had to bet, I'd bet it's Jimmie, but the lack of attention is curious.

Notions of celebrity and propriety were probably different then, even with crowds. You'd have to wait for Sinatra and his bobby soxer fans, or the Beatles for more contemporary reactions. Remember also, Will Rogers was a HUGE celebrity then. I learned of him before I discovered Jimmy.

Jimmie wore the same hat as in the film (or an identical one) when he was photographed with Will Rogers at Blue Yodeler's Paradise the day after this footage was shot, as well as in many other candid photos. If you follow the link to the blog post in this video's description, you can see two different photos of Jimmie, taken days apart, wearing that same hat.
