Seems Merle always get credited for his fantastic talent writing songs and performing them, sometimes credited for his eminent guitarplay - but never for his arrangements... it is SWINGING and every tune stands razorsharp! In his band as well as with the Texas Playboys! AMAZING and so inspiring❤️ Best regards just an Oki from Denmark🇩🇰

72 years ago I sat on Bob WIlls lap at Wills Point, in Sacramento; got sick when he smoked his fat cigar...Later took guitar lessons from Tiny Moore (Mandolin Player). Wills point was "the" spot in Sacramento, expanded over time to include Wills Plunge ! Billy Jack came later and Rose Maddox. Great times, great talent. Great memories.

I can hardly believe I've seen so many familiar names here! Jimmy Rogers whom My Daddy loved, Merle Haggard which I have his first album to play on my then New Circle of Sound record player-plus most of his Albums . Also, someone has the same name as Daddy's Dad's name. And one of my Dad's friends when I was a child; played fiddle for awhile with Mr. Bob Wills. Thinking it was just after WWII..

One thing about Merle is he NEVER closed his shows without doing his mentor (Bob Wills) songs regardless it it was 1 or 3 or 4. Merle always kept Bobs music alive during his performances. Most artists can’t say they’ve kept other artists music alive in their performances but Merle can & has. He’s also kept other artists music alive in his performances. Merle was a natural. Sad that he’s gone RIP Merle

I’m grateful I got to see Merle playing Bob’s fiddle. He was playing in NW Arkansas, and a lot of his kinfolks were there. He kept talking about the squirrel dumplins his cousin, Mary, had cooked for him that day. I know several of Merle’s cousins, The Villines. A lot of them play music too. 🤠🤠

@allenkennedy6748
@allenkennedy6748 4 жыл бұрын
ed p At one point, Merle was somewhat absent from the public eye. He said he decided he was going to learn to play the fiddle, after being a guitarist his entire professional life. He took about a year making the effort. He said he didn’t want to embarrass himself or push a vanity on the band. This performance doesn’t show the extent of his abilities, he was here to honor the Playboys, and memories of Bob. Not many people have stopped down in mid career and achieved this level. Merle was a musician, not someone who just played around. His talent, on guitar and violin will be missed by everyone.

Where's Eldon Shamblin, Johnny Gimble and Leon Rouch? I miss them. Used to do some twin fiddling with Johnny Gimble when I lived in Austin in the 70's and he had the heart of a teacher. He showed me his melody licks on all those old tunes the band is doing on this video and brought them to life as he added the harmony parts. Said Bob Wills wasn't really impressed with fancy all that much as long as everyone could count and started and finished together it was okay. He was a really good old man. Sitting around and playing with him was about as big a thrill as I ever had. I'm still an old time fiddler at heart, but that Texas swing gets me going.

I was thrilled to see Merle on one of his last appearances, here in Tacoma. He was frail, he was thin and tired, but he teared up when he talked of my Dad, Tiny and Mom, Dean Moore. That voice was weak for a few measures, but he managed to sound marvelous, that deep baritone I loved to listen to. Playing with Merle was one of Dad's all time favorite accomplishments.

I always was amazed when your Dad & Johnny Gimble played mandolin together, they played to each other on duets but like in this video, when it came to hot licks Johnny would stand back & listen! They're out in the cosmos serenading the stars now, Rest in Peace.

Shiboof- Your dad was Tiny Moore? Wow!...he was a great innovative musician. I, of course, love his work with Bob Wills but one of my favorite records he did was the one he did with Jethro Burns: "Back to Back".

My father was a native born okie and loved texas swing & Merle Haggard. My mom was from ozarks of Missouri (Joplin/Neosho) so she favored Porter wagoneer & others. I grew up listening to both & actually love texas swing, Merle haggard, Porter Wagoner, bluegrass & Bakersfield sound. Im glad to have had such a variety of music in our home!

It's pretty amazing to watch some of his old black and white concerts, if Bob and playboys came to your town they shut it down with the show, he had guest singers a wild west act. Bob was an original his music brought the family to his carnival.

BTW, I'm from SE KS, only about 90 miles from Tulsa. Johnny Lee & band came to Pittsburg, KS when I was in high school (mid '50's) and he had some fabulous talent with him too. Bob played in Pittsburg, Nov 24, apparently in the late 1940's (see The Tiffany Transcriptions Vol 8) when I was almost too young to appreciate all that great music. Bob Wills certainly had an influence on my musical tastes..........jwe
