@MrDeerbomb6 ай бұрын
@@clowderrrnot offended, but some people in indonesia generally want to be seen as modest or able to take care of themselves when visiting others. Leaving a bit of food or not finishing your drink entirely kinda means "I'm good, I don't really need this food/drink". For me, it's a stupid tradition and I actually see more and more people, even one generation above me, admit that they don't like that too. That tradition still somewhat exists in less urbanized places (ie. poor people in village), other than that you don't really have to worry about it. Even so, you have to know your place. - Leaving food as someone who's from poorer background when visiting a rich person house means "I'm good, this food doesn't amaze me". - Leaving food as someone who's rich when visiting a poor person house means "This food doesn't taste as good as what I usually eat". All foreigners are basically deemed richer than locals, so you should always clean the plates to respect their foods

Smiling in Russia is just as it is in any other country - smile to strangers when appropriate. You can smile to staff (waiters, cashiers, etc.), people who starts a convo with you, people you just met, children if they smile at you, your taxi drivers. Don't smile at random passerbiers. It's not even the smile itself, it's the fact that the person is looking as if they know you and expect you to greet them or anything, which is awkward as hell if you can't recall the person in any way.

I'm from Indonesia and this is the first time I've heard about the don't finish your food rule. In the ancient culture of Indonesia, especially Java and Bali, we believe in the goddess of rice, and to honor the goddess of rice, we are taught to always finish the rice until the last grain. Indonesians are very appreciative of guests, especially foreign guests. If there is a specific culture rule we don't expect guests to follow that rule (if you make a mistake we know you didn't mean it), we will only be offended if the guest is from the same culture (because we will think you did it on purpose to insult). The most important thing to us is that you are friendly and accept being reprimanded (If you are reprimanded it means you have made a fatal mistake, usually religious).

(times change and maybe you won't be considered as a foreigner weirdo) and another fact is that it hurts to smile in the cold times of our winter. per se... cold and dry air. if you smile, then your lips could be literally hurt because they're shrinking via moròz. and that could cause an open bleeding wound right in the middle of your lower lip, which is pretty horrible to have in the cold street far away from home.
