If your still confused think about it like this. Someone is selling poisonous lemonade, you buy all of their lemonade so you can throw it out, there for no one will get poisoned. But you not only got rid of the lemonade, u gave money to the person selling it so that they can buy the supplies to make more poisonous lemonade. So instead of saving everyone, you’re just supporting and encouraging the sale of that lemonade. What you should do instead is buy good lemonade. Then you are supporting the maker of it who is doing good, and tell everyone not to by the bad lemonade because it’s poisonous. Then the bad seller won’t get any money, and eventually go out of buissness!
@3xitthissid3
@3xitthissid3 5 жыл бұрын
Don't buy ANY lemonade - problem solved! Buy only domestic pets (dogs, cats, and farm animals), _not_ exotic animals, including rodents. A real animal lover will watch documentaries, not bring these animals into their homes for their personal amusement. As long as people want to see these animals in person and house them, places like mills and petshops, circuses, and zoos will continue to exist!! I watch polar bear documentaries, but is there a need for me to get one as a pet? Of course not, it's so illogical it makes no sense. People are so removed from reality, that domesticating wild animals like snakes and tigers, etc, is becoming desensitized and normalized. Why is having a pet snake, lizard, hamsters, etc is seen not odd, and even in fact normal nowadays?? Can you imagine the old times when this was a new "invention and was perceived as bizzare?

I worked for PetSmart and they had a Zebra Finch that laid an egg. It's their rules to dispose of any eggs laid. Well they failed and the egg hatched. They were going to throw the baby bird away. Well my good friend took the bird home and fed it every couple hours for weeks. Now it's a happy healthy bird. I am still pissed they were willing to dispose of a helpless bird.

@@namelesswolf2625 So they don't have to provide two cages for zebra finches, canaries, etc. It would take up way too much space. But what I don't get, a bird egg has to incubated by the mother (or father) for many days in a nest or at least nest like spot. If the petstore doesn't want any eggs, how long didn't they check on their birds to not see the incubation?

JerseyFireDragon20 Not necessarily. Dogs and cats are best from whichever place prioritizes their socialization, health, and training which could be from a shelter and/or a responsible breeder because they both prepare said animals for the best possible life with you or someone else. As long as you're not supporting irresponsible breeders (puppy mills, backyard breeders) there should be no issue with getting a dog/ cat from a breeder.

Anytime I go to petsmart they let little kids hold the animals and the little kids are holding them so tight and just being extremely rough with them. I feel so bad for those animals, I'm all for petsmart letting people handle the animals if that person intends to purchase said animal. But just letting a little kid go ham on an animal isn't right and it will just make the animal more aggressive.

Once saw multiple baby bearded dragons in the same, 5-gal tank at Petco. They had no substrate, no real hiding places (their hide was pressed up against the glass so that people could constantly see them), and their only source of food was a small porcelain bowl with live mealworms inside. ...On the bright side, they were priced at $70 per animal. Maybe that would at least prevent them from becoming impulse purchases.

I did an entire project that took a year to complete about this exact problem with chain pet stores like petco and petsmart. And a few of the photos in this video were featured in my project. Except I just focused on reptiles and not all animals but anyway, I really hope it made a difference to the people who saw my presentation and heard me speak. Also I want to start a reptile rescue when I'm older (I'm 14 years old). I can't understand how some people can't see the value in another creature's life and sustainability, unless it's another human. I am a huge animal lover, I used to keep fish but, one day my dad came to pick me up from school when I was ten, and in the back of his car was a skinny little adolescent bearded dragon in a 20 gallon tank with improper heating and lighting. I named her Clover and she changed my life, and made me realize where my passion really lies, not in fish but in the most misunderstood and neglected animals on the planet, reptiles. Clover is now in a 46.5 gallon tank with newspaper as a substrate and proper heating and lighting. I'm still working on her weight but she is so much more alert and active and healthy than when I first met my best friend. This video is my life and what I strive to stop. Thank you for spreading the truth GoHerping.

I would like to discourage you from starting a reptile rescue. I'm a vegan and I volunteered at the Rainforest Reptile Refuge Society in Surrey Canada, which was ran by a vegan married couple. I read on the internet someone saying that they had to sell reptile eggs to breeders in order to make enough money. They made a request for funding to the city of Surrey, but it was denied, so they had to sell the refuge to a non-vegan guy I who rents out animals to the movie industry and other such things to I make money, because he doesn't really have a choice if I he wants enough money to be able to pay for all the food and everything else for the animals. The name of the building is now "Urban Safari Rescue Society" or something like that. I think you could save more reptiles if you would study STEM in school and become a computer programmer/software engineer/coder or physician or some other engineer or high-pitched job. This is for two reasons. One is that with all the money you are making, you can fund the printing of educational pamphlets to lay around in public to educate people on boycotting pet stores, buy books and DVDs to distribute to libraries, pay for the tuition of humane educators in schools, etc. You can also use your money to buy expensive explicitly vegan convenience foods at grocery stores instead of cheaper vegan foods that are not explicitly vegan, such as tomatoes, apples, cucumbers, oatmeal from the bulk bins, dried lentils from the bulk aisle, etc. And if you see a vegan magazine on the shelf at a store like Whole Foods, buy it. This will make it more likely for the stores to stock more of the product in the future, and thus gives the appearance that veganism is popular and thus normal to the public. Most people recycle, for example, not because they think it's eco-friendly, but because they believe that most people in their neighborhood recycle. The book "Change of Heart" by Nick Cooney discusses this. I recommend you also read Nick Cooney's two subsequent books as well. The 2nd reason is because I read that some restrictions on immigration are being lifted because the tech companies in Vancouver complained that they couldn't find workers, and I've heard that Canada graduates fewer software engineers than several other countries. In Burnaby, the health food grocery store used to offer two vegan cakes, and now they only offer one. I can't help but suspect the reason for this is the increased percentage of non-white people in Burnaby. Now Burnaby is majority non-white. Frank Raymond (not his real name; it's just a nom-de-plume) is a man of East Indian descent who was born in India to a Muslim family and has discussed how non-whites are bringing their lack of respect for animals into Western countries in his book "Sweet Dreams and Terror Cells". He has also discussed this in radio interviews on KZbin on his channel "When Giants Break the Spell", especially in his video with the word "Hunt" in it. He only has less than a dozen videos so far.

Well that actually depends; a variety of animals aren't as happy and don't survive as well due to their biomes being too big for hunting to be as capable. Take milk snakes for example; captive bred, they get more rodents, and it's easier for them to survive. Certain species of animals also would be better with us (and are), because of their colors being too bright, and too much predators being around, which is taken care if a bit more to humans. Now, don't get me wrong, we shouldnt kill the extra predators. We should just scatter them (with their families), into a more possible and happy enviornment with more of a varoence of prey to eatm

Dizzy Kitten there's tons of petitions you can sign. I guess there's originations you can support that focus around animal cruelty itself I'm not sure if there's anything that directly targets chain pet stores though. You can advise people you know to not purchase animals from them and obviously not support that aspect of their stores yourself. When people stop buying and they're no longer making money there's no benefit to them having and selling animals so in result they would have to stop selling live animals.

Dizzy Kitten the thing is Petco, and Petsmart are big corporations. It would take a lot of people to say "stop!" to them. @GoHerping
@GoHerping 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a great question and I've been trying to find things we can do. Although petitions do exist like WhatEvenIsThis_ said, a petition directly against them will do nothing until they actually start losing money or going out of business. A petition via the government to address it probably won't do much, as I'm sure they get plenty of tax money from it, and have what they would consider "more important" things to deal with. So encouraging others to stop shopping there, along with supporting local shops, family businesses, small private breeders, reptile expos, adoption centers, etc. instead of the corporations seems to be what will make the biggest difference, along with spreading as much info as possible on the topic. But make sure to let me know if you ever figure out other things that can help fix the issue, and I'll keep looking myself

Honestly the biggest thing you can do to get these corporate fatcats to listen is to stop giving them money. I have worked at one of these chains for 9 years. In store, once they become petco or petsmart property, there are policies in place to protect the animals. And most of the employees who get jobs there LOVE animals and take as best care as they can in store. However, that doesn't mean the animals are coming from good facilities. I can gaurantee you that the only thing corporate cares about is numbers and money. So, as he said; Don't give them money. Buy supplies if you want but don't buy animals.

I'm going to take extra time to do my research and make sure I'm supporting a store that actually cares about the wellbeing and health of their pets. Seeing all those poor lizards, frogs, and turtles living in plastic boxes, living in their own feces, and suffering from nasty cuts and infections is so morally wrong on many levels. Supply and demand is all i gotta say. If everyone stopped going to PetCo/PetSmart to get animals, then there would be no demand for animals. Also know this, peace cannot exist without suffering. Not saying anyone wants things to suffer (well some do) but its necessary and will never stop. All we can do is try and reduce it.

There are puppy/kitten mills too, so it's not about the type of animal. It would also be hard to have any laws about who is allowed to breed animals, since people can always claim that it was an accidental breeding. The best that can be done, is have laws about how many animals a person is allowed to breed, since you can't really claim that you had 100 "accidental" litters.

I work in a petstore. I started working there years ago before I knew about the truth behind where they get their animals. Thankfully, in my store my petcare coworkers and I pride ourselves in how much we care for and take care of the animals. However it is sad how many times we've come across sick animals. It really sucks, I want to leave the job because of this but then I can't help but feel guilty if the next person to replace me will just not give a shit about them. I haven't bought any animals from them and will never. I think chain pet stores should stick to sales on pet items only.

This is sick. No animal deserves this treatment. They have minds, and beating hearts, and a longing for freedom. Those poor animals don't understand why they are living like this, or what they did to deserve this treatment, when in reality they did nothing wrong. I honestly think that the people behind this should go through a month or two of the EXACT treatment, no mercy. And DON'T YOU DARE say that that's "mean" or "unfair treatment" because in my eyes, people's lives aren't any more significant. Every life matters equally. (No I'm not a vegan, just someone with a passion for animals and their treatment. You don't have to be vegan to care.) Edit: most of this was me spurting my anger, sorry! The animals still don't deserve what's being done to them.

But these mills don't equate "survival of the fittest" or nature in any way. The animals aren't given a chance in the first place. In most conditions there's no food for them to fight over, no water reservoirs to join together at, and no self-dug burrows to defend. They're given nothing but plastic boxes and rotting corpses. Please, reevaluate your outlook on this situation. It's more serious than you seem to think.

And even if your local pet store takes good care of them, you have to consider the fact that they market these animals as toys you can put in a small box, (ones they often sell and promote) occasionally feed some pellets they sell that have no nutritional value, as a result, the vast majority of these animals end up in uneducated peoples' homes where they're cared for horribly just because people keep on feeding this cycle

I think this is a personal choice you're gonna have to make after weighing pros and cons. I have worked for one of these chains for 9 years and can give you some info on that. First of all, just understand, the main thing corporate cares about are numbers and money. They don't care WHY the numbers are what they are and will make up their own conclusions but won't step foot in a store to get to know the real problems. They are making their 9-5 paycheck, and have put rules in place to protect themselves from lawsuits and everything else is not their problem. Most people in the corporate offices have never worked in the bottom level or investigate anything and have little understanding because they are safely in their bubble. Now, the bottom level usually consists of people in stores who usually get jobs at the stores because it means making money while working with animals. That's a range. Each store is going to have its own personal environment based on individuals hired. It can range from competent to incompetent based on who is there and sometimes who is hiring. So you may like your local petshop employees enough to want to keep them in business or not. Now, these petshop chains do do some good things. They allow local rescues to show animals to get adopted at NO profit for the store, other than what an individual is going to purchase in supplies. I know for a fact that petco doesn't get any money from an adoption in and of itself WHILE offering free coupon books to new pet owners for deals on supplies and services. They also give %100 of donations to their intended causes. (Probably for a tax write off and reputation...but still.) There are also policies in place to protect animals in store. However, I couldn't personally tell you where all the animals come from before they get in stores. I can also tell you that the reason they sell animals is becausr people buy supplies when they buy animals. They actually make more money with supplies and services than animals themselves. Selling the animals is just a means to boost those sales. I personally think that if you like your local petshop employees, you can support them and buy supplies and services while avoiding buying animals. As I said, they understand money and numbers. Not complaints. Not petitions. Not praises. Money and numbers speak loudest. But if you think your local store sucks, then don't shop there at all. If you find that this stuff bothers you so much that you feel it outweighs the pros, don't feel guilty about not giving money to the corporation machine. You are the consumer, you have that power of choice. And it can be done gracefully without pitching a fit. Fits don't do much anyways, especially if you're still buying anything anyways.
@amberschwendinger7902
@amberschwendinger7902 7 жыл бұрын
Zebracorn2012 buying supplies is different than purchasing an animal. The company uses statistics on what they are selling and what they aren't selling. If no one buys the animals, it is different then no one buying decor. It's all about inventory. When you purchase a fish tank, they mark it gone and another returns. Showing the money earned. If no animals are selling, prices will drop, and if still nothing. I've seen local petstores adopt out free. Again this most likely doesn't happen often since many people are unaware that mills like these exist. In summary buying decor or a tank does not effect the petstores profit from animals. I personally shop at my local petsmarts and Petco's when needed be for sales on decor and supplies. I hoped this cleared some things up.

Unfortunately these stores will likely never close. I buy my supplies from mom and pop shops, mostly because they offer much healthier alternatives food wise. However, in not buying pets from these places,it slows the process of more animals coming in at least. I dont think they will fully stop, but it may save a few lives.Like this kid said in his other video, Petco/Smart looks at what sections sell the most and order more based on sales. If the animals arent selling well, they wont bring more inor will at least order lesser numbers.

I know this video is mostly touching base on smaller animals and reptiles, and that cats weren't touched on during this video. But, I do want to speak up for Petsmart in one department, which is their cats. You should -absolutely- never hesitate to adopt a cat from Petsmart. Petsmart works together with your local Humane Society to get cats adopted through their store. All those cats and kittens you see at Petsmart come directly from your local shelter. When I adopted my last cat I adopted him through finding him at Petsmart. He was moved to Petsmart because they were struggling to get him adopted through the shelter. He'd been at the store for over a month when we found him and adopted him. So many of the employees knew him and were so relieved to see him to go to a new home. Furthermore, we took him straight from Petsmart to the local shelter to finish up the last of his vaccines and get him microchipped. When we walked in, three of the ladies working there lit up to see him again and were ecstatic to hear someone finally adopted him. So please, PLEASE, do not hesitate to adopt a cat or kitten from Petsmart. Adopting a cat or kitten there is just the same as adopting from your local humane society. They work together.
@no1caresanymore

I have adopted two cats from PetSmart that were in the same situation. They were bonded and could only be adopted as a pair, so it was even harder for our local shelter to find them a home. Other than providing a venue, PetSmart itself has nothing to do with the care of the cats. Staff and volunteers from the shelter are there and take care of everything, and it's just a good thing they've got going.

@@crhombifer12 First of all, Alex was talking about birds, rodents, etc in addition to reptiles. But sometimes things need to be specified because some people can't think for themselves. That's not intended as an insult to anyone, I'm just saying that some people hear "don't buy animals from PetSmart" and assume that means every single living creature, and they may be unaware of the shelter/store partnership. It's fine to adopt the cats because, as OP stated, they come from animal shelters, not from mills. Buying animals from the store indirectly supports mills, while adopting the cats supports the shelter. If defending cats makes me a crazy cat lady, then I guess I am. It doesn't mean I don't 100% agree with the message of this video, or that I don't care about reptiles, birds, fuzzy critters, fish, etc. I personally care about all animals, big and small.

@@crhombifer12 No worries, we all have bad days. I'm in complete agreement that buying the animals from chain pet stores is bad and makes the problem worse. The Humane Society is, of course, a great place to look for animals in need of a home, but the idea behind putting them in PetSmart is that people might fall in love with a particular cat they didn't even know they were looking for. For me, personally, this was the case. My sister and I were at PetSmart for our dog's training class, and afterward we were walking around the store and wandered past the cats. We both love cats but didn't have any because we didn't know how our dog felt about them. Our dog spotted them and was very interested. Instead of barking and going nuts, though, she just sat staring at them while wagging her tail with her happy face on. This set us at ease, and there was a pair of cats that had been there for a while. We took turns going in to see them and fell in love, so we adopted them. We wouldn't have known we could have them without this interaction.

I recommend when going to a pet store, asking them if they have a pet in the back. Those ones are the ones who were returned, escaped, etc. That’s how I got my hamster Jordan, but he had a very different story than those hamsters. He was left in a box with 8 other hamsters (the total amount of hamsters was two boys and seven girls) I took Jordan home with me and unfortunately passed away due to wet tail, but he lived a very long life. If the pet stores have any in the back I suggest getting them. I have heard lots of professionals say it’s okay to get those. And when you get them, you aren’t creating more room for the store to buy more pets because those ones can only be in the back. And they are less likely to be adopted

It's so disgusting how people would do such horrendous things to poor, innocent animals! All they care about is making more money, in the long run, these stores would probably do better if they actually cared for the animals because people could rely on them. I hope one day these types of stores and mills shut down for good.

THANK YOU, it's not always about the care in the store, it's the mills behind those stores. If you want reptiles contact breeders, find reptile rescues, or go to small chain stores that get their reptiles from local breeders and are a specialty store that revolve around only reptiles and their care. Direct from breeders is best because you will know their morph and bloodlines. Rescues are also nice and you can find a lot of common species looking for homes. I rescued my crested gecko from a woman who got it for her daughter from petco and didn't realize they can live 25-30 years and wanted to get rid of him so I took him in and I love him. He doesn't need to be a rare morph for me to love him.

As a plant lover, this also applies to plants in any store actually. They suffer the same negligence in Home Depot, a dollar store or a pet store even. A plant nursery maybe more reputable but not all are the same. Most circumstances the plant is not watered often and like some pet stores, the plant is rescued if it was purchased. Again, it depends on the actual establishment not all are the same but the origin of the plant or pet in this case may not come from an ethically pure or humane.

@--Paws--
@--Paws-- 4 жыл бұрын
@@werewolven6335 Plants may not "fear" but they feel pain and react to it. They may not have a nervous system like certain muticellular organisms do, yet they have electrical and chemical impulses that act like nerves. When certain parts of a plant is broken or damaged, they release chemicals and will actually learn to grow a stem, a leaf or make the rest of its body more resistant to the cause of damage. The chemicals a plant releases may also attract other organisms to aide the plant; ants will mobilize like white blood cells to remove the threat of their host plant and home. Plants also attack chemically against other plants either through the roots which may release gases to hinder the growth of the opposing plant. Yet in some cases plants cooperate with one another in a network, especially trees in a forest who "talk" with each other through their roots with the help of some fungus. Certain fungus have a relationship of not only feeding off plants but aide them with transferring nutrients which a plant cannot obtain by itself.

@@--Paws-- While all that may be true, they don't have a brain to process things like fear or pain. There is absolutely no comparison between the suffering between not getting watered at home depot and being starved because it's inconvenient to feed you at petsmart or at the actual supplier. I can't even call places like Reptiles by Mack a breeder, they are straight up just reptile suppliers.

We made the mistake of getting one of our snakes at PETCO before we knew any of this, the reason I started to look into it all more is that my bp ended up having a TON of mites and was very stressed (it was hard to see them when we got her as she's pretty dark). I had no idea they had mills for anything besides puppies/kittens until now. Now every time I see people looking at reptiles there, I always tell them to steer clear because of the horrid experience my snake went through. Thank you so much for spreading awareness and shedding light on this huge, yet little-known issue !

Thank you for making this video. All of this needs to come to light. I used to work at a chain pet store and I quit because they housed 3 snakes together, two ball pythons and one red tailed boa. I protested against this and said it was not okay. I suggested we keep the tarantula in a 10 gallon aquarium. My manager said that wasn't allowed so they put all the snakes together because they didn't have enough room because of poor planning and ordering 1 extra animal from the supplier. They also had a horned mountain dragon that needs running water in order for it to notice the water and drink it and it didn't have it and I'm sure it died of dehydration. I couldn't support that so I quit. When I worked there, there was issues with humidity in ball pythons. I was probably the only one misting the reptiles on a daily basis. Our beardies and leopards were on sand, I protested against this. When it came to our snakes, I told people that they should wait for reptile conventions to come to town to get a snake and don't settle for our snakes because they're cheap. At the time, one of our balls was having a horrible shed so I was trying to convince people not to buy it. I also had someone come in right after they bought a snake and were wondering if their snake was hungry because it struck at them. They tried to feed it the first day they brought it home, then they brought it back to the store the next day to ask me why it wasn't eating. I guess my point is...I tried and I couldn't help. I had to quit because I felt like if I worked there I supported that treatment and I don't.

As an employee of PetSmart, I can unfortunately confirm that, at least in Kentucky, our reptiles come from a large mill known as "Reptiles Incorporated". I have personally seen animals in our isolation area dying and being denied treatment. I give customers all the proper husbandry tips for their animals, and have been scolded for doing so because on occasion the recommended setup is less expensive, or so much more expensive that the customer doesn't purchase the animal. I refuse to give false information to make a quick buck.

And this is the sad reality of the cruel (bit of an understatement) Pet Trade. This i s why i always kinda agree with Peta, whilst many of us care about our animals a lot, the majority don't and that's maybe why we should have never developed a pet trade. This is why i haven't and will never support a Chain Pet Shop. No matter who you are or what your intentions are if you're 'saving' these animals, all you are doing is fuelling the pet trade and making it worse. Even buying dry stock from these places contributes to what you see here. Anyone that partakes in these actions cannot be labelled as humane...

You are 100% right with everything you say. As a kid I got a guinea pig from a petstore, we didn't know better at that time, it had a bad skin funghus, and abszess in its' face (both had to be treated by a vet) and died about one year later. I then didn't have any pets for several years until I moved out at age 18 and finally could fulfill my dream of getting a dog and cats, these were all rescues (and they did amazing). At about age 20 I planned on getting a dwarf hamster. And actually I didn't know at that time that there were rescue facilities for them. I also was afraid that if I didn't get a baby, it might be bitey and I wouldn't be able to handle it properly (as I had no experience with hamsters). I got one from the petstore, she got diabetes with about 18 months and died. She was the sweetest and loveliest thing. This is about 15 years in the past and I still have cats and a dog (all rescues) and I would never ever buy an animal from a petstore again. Over the past (more than a) decade I did so much research, worked at a shelter, and know how bad the conditions for the animals at petstores are. When chosing my cats and dog, I looked for animals that would have a hard time being rehomed (because of their temperament, age, illnesses). This is what I go for, cause I know I can provide them a good home. When I'm getting a snake, some time in the future (I plan on getting one for about 15 years now, but it was never the right time), I also want it to be an older rescue, which has low chances in being rehomed.

There are many breeders who sell their animals online from their website. You can also check forums/classifieds. Check the adoption section on reptile forums, often people will ship and maybe even pay the shipping just to get their beloved pet rehomed with a good person. Who knows, you may find someone locally. Contact your local herpetology society, they may have animals for sale or adoption. Travel to reptile expos to buy from a breeder in person. There are many alternatives to buying abused pet mill animals available.

One time, when i went to petsupermarket, i saw a betta fish on the brink of death. it’s fine we’re almost totally gone, bloody with fin rot, and it had no color, just a sickly gray. it barely moved, i couldn’t leave it there. i went up to the manager and said “hey, this fish is gonna die really soon, can i take it home to help it?” she said she had watched his fins disintegrate over time, and that she couldn’t give it to me for the lowest possible price. which was $2.00 so i put the betta who had been living in a dirty cup into a heated, filtered 10 gallon filled with plants. i treated the fin rot, and figured out he was a dragonscale. i makes him hades, he had these bright red anal fins and these fluffy fins which were a muted dark purple. he was beautiful! i showed photos to the manager a few months later and she was so happy. he lived happily until i was taken out of the home... he died while he was out of my care, unfortunately. my point is here, if you are considering getting a sick animal to nurse back to health, don’t outright buy it as if it’s a normal animal, especially without addressing its condition to the manager, get it for free. in hindsight, i should’ve pushed getting him for free, but at the very least i didn’t pay the full price.

My leopard gecko was from either petco or petsmart, I didn't buy her she was originally my cousins friends. The store recommended her the kind of thing you put them in for 5 minute while you are cleaning just a few things out of their tank. No light, no heating pad, nothing but one little hide and some cork bark chips for the substrate. She then went to my cousin and I'm not sure why, but she freaked out my cousin so she gave her too me. My cousin had put her in a 10 gallon tank with a light which is way better then what she had but not the best. When I got her, we weren't 100% prepared and we were moving because we kind of got her very suddenly. We recently moved her into a 40 gallon tank (we thought it was gonna be 20) with and under the tank heater, a light, three hides, water bowl, food area, and some more stuff for her too do because she acts more like a crested gecko then a leopard gecko idk she has a lot of personality lol. She is super healthy now, I might change her food soon but rn she is with mealworms with the calcium and vitamin supplements ofc and crickets sometimes because whats what she likes but she is starting to change taste.

I've worked at an unnamed major pet retailer for about two years and you're of course correct about sourcing from mass breeders, but if an animal has so much as an eye booger we take it to the vet immediately and keep it completely unavailable for sale until the vet clears it. If the stores that you guys are going to have sick or injured animals, they aren't doing their job properly and you should leave a review to get the attention of the district managers! There's no need for additional suffering

Thank you for posting this. Im sharing this. Yes its uncomfortable and yes it's sad. The only way it's going to stop though is through awareness and stiffer penalties for animal abuse and for animal mills. The hermit crab videos are heartbreaking as well. I used to get one at the beach as a child. Now I go to the shops on the boardwalk and try to talk people out of getting them or at least encourage them to look into the level of care they actually require before purchasing them. Thank you again and I hope you continue to share more videos like this. We need to feel angry and uncomfortable. Its the only way we will start to fix the problem. A few minutes of being uncomfortable is nothing compared to what those poor animals are going through as we speak.

So sad watching this, I was unaware of the conditions and environment that the leopard geckos I purchased from Petco went through. The first gecko I purchased was literally the only one there at the time and a baby maybe like a month to 2 months old. The second one I got was after I saw the videos on the animal mills they purchase from. Thank you for your video it sheds light on an interesting perspective. Cause in my mind I saved those two but in reality I allowed more to go through hell. Never again.
