Can't argue with anything here! Having practiced Parkour for a good while now, we've basically tested various landing techniques to find out which one is most useful if you don't want to destroy your knees. Essentially a break-fall roll becomes useful anywhere from 1m drops and beyond. However, I'd like to point out that when you mention "normal landings" you're actually using two different techniques in the footage you show. The first one shows you just bending your legs to absorb the impact, whereas the second example, with the fat height drop in the rock climbing hall, shows you not only bending your knees, but also tapping the floor and bending your arms to absorb impact as well. In Parkour, we usually call this a "safety tap" and it makes a massive difference in how the impact is absorbed across your body. Just to show you how effective it can be, watch this; kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp29na2kZrN5jbMm5s Try taking that drop without your hands... your knees would probably equal pudding after that.
@a-blivvy-yus6 жыл бұрын
Because Science video analysis of District B13 landings next?
@acdchook6 жыл бұрын
I noticed the same thing. I always assumed a "real" superhero landing would involve the feet hitting first, then the legs bending to absorb a lot of the force, slowing down until the knee impacts the ground a lot more gently, and at the same time the arm hits the ground and similarly bends to also absorb some impact. The way these calculations are being done is seeming to assume a single point of impact on just the kneecap causing them to come to a complete stop as an essentially rigid body, which is clearly not how it's done. At least not by non-superstrength heroes.
@rmsgrey6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's a significant difference between the rigid-body drop where you're already crouched/kneeling before you hit the ground, and a landing where you land with your feet then collapse down into a crouch, and rebound to the classic pose. Keeping your thigh vertical the whole time is going to hurt (and limit how low your core can get before you stop, thereby limiting your stopping distance and stopping time), but I can get lower on one knee than I can squatting, so landing in a position that naturally rebounds into the SHL pose gives me a better stopping distance than anything that doesn't leave me flat on the ground...
@terranempire26 жыл бұрын
Yeah I consider every time batman does that style of landing a poor choice,. If you have Superman or Wonder woman fine They have reinforced bodies even Deadpool or Wolverine can get away with it as there healing factor means that it would hurt but repair. Iron man I think can cheat it. If you think about it he has 3 thrusters pointed downward. one on his foot two on his hands so he can cut the thrust above the landing zone then do a last second suicide burn a couple meters above impact to slow his impact and give the appearance of one.
@arkhamrejectscommunitybatr65996 жыл бұрын
PK safety roll for the win! When I was practicing parkour I’d do them all the time! It’s all about extending time when landing and spreading the force of impact
@Nimelennar6 жыл бұрын
I think your velocity numbers for Iron Man 2 are off by an order of magnitude, because he's not dropping from a standstill.. If you watch the scene leading up to that, he's not going from a stabilized position 30m up, he's jumping from an airplane at cruising altitude, descending in an aerodynamic position. Let's assume the extra mass from the suits exactly cancels out the extra wind resistance from being slightly bigger, and say that his terminal velocity in a head-first position would be about the same as a typical person's (about 300 km/h). He then accelerates himself further (just eyeballing it, it looks like his speed roughly doubles), and then smashes into the ground, making no visible attempt to decelerate (although he obviously reorients in the last second or so). So, that's about 600km/h, or about 166 m/s. So, I get a total force of 772,000 kN. Alternately, he's experiencing an acceleration (assuming 1/24 of a second) of 4000 m/s/s, or about 408 Gs, over that fraction of a second. So, yeah. I don't care what that suit is made of. Tony Stark's skull has been squeezed through the neck of his suit and is now firmly lodged in what remains of his pelvic girdle. Not that his brain hasn't always been located there, but now it's a bit more literal.

+ Epic Lightning, uh, aaaactually, even a rapid deceleration in the last moment is only going to spread all that force over only fractionally more time. The impulse will still be enough to liquefy his brain.

A parkour roll is probably the best technique for landing. And it looks cool too
@DragoNate6 жыл бұрын
Agreed on both points. Now I have a better way of explaining to classes why the roll works. I've always just said that the roll redirects your downward energy forwards, which means we don't smash into the floor. The coolest part of the parkour roll, in my opinion, is that you can actually use the energy coming out of the roll to do something else: run, run up a wall, vault, probably some tricking moves or whatever else.

Jonathan Spier Haven't tried that parachute landing, but judging by the position the legs end up, it doesn't seem to be practical outside of parachuting. Parachuting isn't free falling, if you do the PLF after a high jump, all of the momentum will go to your feet and they will smash into the ground.

Yes, mass is constant and doesn't rely on gravity, but weight does. But here on Earth, 90kg of mass is 90kg of weight, because we use Earth gravity as a sort of baseline. If you go to the moon, your weight changes, but your mass stays the same. If you weigh 90kg and cut off 10kg, you've still lost 10kg of mass, and weight. You are less massive, and therefore, weigh less. I think I got that right.

If you land on a vehicle with enough force to total it like that, you're probably not walking away. It's whatever though, no movie is perfect, but when the plot, story, and characters are great enough, it becomes easier to give a pass to minor flaws like this.

Hey Kyle, So Batman was crushing the van in that scene. Since the top of the van was compressed in that moment, doesn't that reduce the impact force because in increases time AND distance it takes for him to stop? Also another factor in this video, is the Jerk, the rate of change in acceleration. When you're falling in anything that does reduce jerk, your organs will literally crumble in on each other, so even if the force doesn't shatter your bones, the jerk should shatter your brain.. and other squishy matter inside a human. ._.

To change your weight, since you can't really change g, you can only gain or lose mass. (g changes a just a little when you are on earth depending on where and how high from the sea's surfice you are, but that is so small a change that it doesn't really make a difference on your wight, or it changes if you go to another planet or any celestial body like the moon, but here I assume that you stay on earth).

almost anything actually mass and weight are different, Mass is a measurement of the amount of matter something contains, while Weight is the measurement of the pull of gravity on an object. also the Mass of an object doesn't change when an object's location changes. Weight, on the otherhand does change with location. think about it if you are standing on earth and your mass is 80 kilograms and you weigh 200 pounds, and you go to the moon, your mass stays the same while your weight doesn't
@almostanything69026 жыл бұрын
Tyler Tennies yeah, I know that. I never said that mass and weight are the same. I just said that mass and weight are related to each other (I don't know if the word related is the correct term, probably isn't, but what I mean is that when mass changes, weight changes as well, with the equation connecting them being Weight = mass x g)

I looked up gold-titanium alloys and they're a real thing: phys.org/news/2016-07-lab-titanium-gold-alloy-harder-steels.html Density in a 3-1 mix of titanium and gold would be 8.2g/cm^3, roughly the same as that of iron or steel. Despite the increased hardness, the alloy is not very much stronger than pure titanium, with a compressive strength of roughly 170MPa, improved to 200MPa at best. If Iron Man's thigh is that of an average man, with a circumference of 20.35 inches (0.517m), and the suit is a hollow column surrounding the thigh with a thickness of X meters, then the 31MPa pressure from a 30m SuperHero Landing would have to be transmitted to the rest of the suit through a surface area of 0.517X m^2. We work out that the thickness of the TiAu metal around Iron Man's thigh would have to be at least 31/(200 x 0.571) = 0.27m. That's right, Iron Man's thighs would have to be a full 27x2: 54cm wider than Tony Stark's thighs. That adds up to a very THICC width of nearly a meter per leg. Of course, the Marvel show writers could have done a *little* bit of research, and found the gold-coloured Titanium Nitride, with a compressive strength 2100MPa (more than 10x better - www.matbase.com/material-categories/ceramics-and-glasses/crystalline/technical/nitrides/material-properties-of-titanium-nitride-tin.html#properties) and reduce the suit's thigh thickness to a more reasonable 2.5cm, but TiN sounds less cool than 'titanium-gold alloy'.

my assumption was always that the knee/fist were not the first to hit.... but that both feet hit and they bend their knees to slow themselves to a stop (using their super hero muscles) and the fist to the ground was to stop them from falling over forward (also the "pose" after is very similar to the stance sprinters and football players start in)
@dc18426 жыл бұрын
ke6960 the issue is not what you land on it's the shortened time it takes to come to a complete stop. You could land any method which makes you stop faster and apply those forces and potentially break anything rather than save it falling slower. The knees are just a good way to land as they buy you the longest time
@kce69606 жыл бұрын
reallyyou kidd ... right my point was not to argue against that but to add that if you could land and slow yourself but end up in the superhero pose you would be ready to move sooner than landing vertically on both feet then standing all the way back up
@Sableagle6 жыл бұрын
Again with the rolling: forwards, sideways or backwards, Jiu Jitsu rolls are designed to start with you falling and end with you on your feet in a ready position. Ready to fight right there, not to compete in the 100m hurdles, but ready. We used to practise a combination of backward roll and defence against a kick by having someone push us over and try to kick us. 10% good stuff, 30% might work on drunks, 55% bullshit and 5% getting yourself crippled for the sake of a cotton belt, but the 10% good stuff was good stuff.
@christopherhuang95016 жыл бұрын
Right, that was my assumption too -- that the superhero landing was basically just a normal landing (complete with flexing knees to slow the landing, as described in the video) and one hand out for balance and stability ... that the knee is never supposed to actually touch the ground.
@kce69606 жыл бұрын
the only argument i see against rolling is similar to lifeguards diving (at least the way i learned)... if you dive you have to take your eyes off the person you are saving (or fighting as with superheros) so we were taught to jump in feet first and use your arms to keep your head above water as much as possible when jumping in (and in the "super hero landing" their head is up and looking forward usually)

@james_xl_quest72516 жыл бұрын
Hello Kyle Great episode proving one of the craziest guys in Marvel was correct :'D 2 Things: 1) A mutant could have the required strength/density to manage the landing without hurting themselves. You focused on Ironman and Batman for the superhero landing. I know Ironman has taken drastic beatings in his suit, that if not for the suit, would have killed Tony. However, with Batman, would he not take serious damage being rattle around in a suit with those kinds of pressures you discussed? 2) The reverse of the superhero landing, the superhero take-off. Ironman seems to not damage the ground, regardless of lift off velocity. But in a movie like Hancock, Hancock wrecks the ground just as badly when he takes-off. How would one leave the ground at accelerated speed without damaging the ground beneath themselves? Take Care and Be Well
@daltonwilliams17236 жыл бұрын
James Quest i think that's because when a superhuman like hancock takes off, he's applying a reverse force to propel himself upward. Iron man propels himself through his blast, which at worst would leave scorch marks
@jeremiahwilson38736 жыл бұрын
James Quest Batman's suit is reinforced. It is noting like Tony's though. I think it has Kevlar weave in to it. Others have pointed out about his cape and how the van woulf of absorbed some of the energy on landing landing.
@zyxyx67546 жыл бұрын
Dalton Williams The propulsion iron man exerts on him and his suit would provide equal force on the ground he's taking off of. It would do much more than just "leave scorch marks".
@daltonwilliams17236 жыл бұрын
Zyxyx but it obviously isn't even remotely similiar to how superhumans like hulk leap or take off the ground. Something like a space shuttle exudes far more propulsive force in taking off but it doesn't break apart the ground beneath it
@james_xl_quest72516 жыл бұрын
Dalton Williams / Zyxyx - Being that the propulsion from the Ironman suit and Space Shuttles are different, as Space Shuttles use fuel and Ironman suit uses the arc reactor power, they may react with the ground differently. We'd have to break down the equation of how fast Ironman takes off, and the amount of energy/mass being pressed/thrown at the ground to get him to that speed. That would tell us what, if any, damage the ground would have to take.

There’s at least one video of a parkour dude falling from about 2 stories (15-20 ft) onto concrete. He lands in a squat and bends his knees, as this vid suggests. No damage. He walks away. But, he also probably has really strong legs. Most non-athletes would knock themselves out with a knee to the face from that height, but the strong-legged can do it. On the other hand, I once fell onto concrete from 7-8 ft (my hands were at about 15’ and I was dangling below). I landed in a 4 point stance, crawling style, accidentally. I bruised the bone underneath of my patella and it hurt for weeks after. I also kind of jammed both wrists and bruised a toe. I walked away but it wasn’t fun.
@RyanAlexanderBloom6 жыл бұрын
Noob First Class sure. It’s safer than any dead stop landing mostly because you don’t actually stop moving, the force gets applied over a longer time, which is the point of this video. Sort of the same reason landing on an incline, as in ski jumping, is safer. You don’t impact and stop, you just redirect and keep going.
@davesmilingcoyote6 жыл бұрын
But could that parkour dude survive the impact of being hit with a raw egg?
@Jhakaro6 жыл бұрын
What video and what surface? There are some vids that are fake and many others that have situations like you describe are onto sand or piles of dirt. Often when not rolling, they do a 4 point contact to spread the impact to the arms too. And yes conditioning helps strengthen but it's more about bio mechanics and technique which are built up after months or years of training. When Kyle landed in this video he landed very roughly and his knees where at a near perfect 90 degrees or worse which is dangerous. Want to lean forward on the balls of your feet as you land instead and have the knees only bend a bit.

Max Wyght yeah i noticed that track suit looked similiar to what he has in the comics.
@JasonWW20006 жыл бұрын
At the very most an inner liner would be no more than 1 in thick all around his body. Regardless of the type of padding used, 1 inch of thickness can only absorb a certain amount of impact. A good example would be a motorcycle helmet. It uses a one-time collapsible foam to absorb and spread out an impact over a large area. It does have its limitations but it seems that Iron Man far greatly exceeds all of these limitations of what is practical. Meaning his body should be a mangled mess inside of that suit after some of the impacts we see in the movies.

Ya, none of those forces on their legs matter because if you pay close attention to how they are all landing. You will notice that their head are hanging forward, almost parallel with the ground. This means that almost all of the force that their heads are experiencing from travel towards the ground is going to be put against their neck in a jerking motion towards the ground. At any kind of 2 story fall you are talking the high end of a low speed collision (20-25mph), that is more than enough force to cause severe hyper-flexion and potentially even be fatal. This is more the case because at those speeds you are most likely to die from such an impact without a safety belt to help lengthen the time the chest comes to a stop. Seat belts extend stopping times up to 4-5 times longer than without a seat belt. Since we know that whiplash (hyperflexion) is caused at speeds as low as 1-2 miles per hour and at a minimum of 3.5 Gs on the neck, we can guarantee that our super hero's will be luck to feel their broken legs after all the damage to their spine and neck. Good demo landing of how to do things right, proper spinal alignment is key in minimizing back injury when falling from great heights. PS: Iron man is the worst offender of this, as he intentionally throws his head forward before he makes his landings, reducing the amount of time even further for his head to come to a stop. #whiplash4dayz

I never knew that the "Three Point Landing" was bad!!! I always heard phrases like "A perfect three point landing" in videogames and junk! Never did I know that I was actually breaking parts of my plane! Good to know! Rear wheels first, then nose!
@Feltyr6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of Aircraft, a "taildragger" (The ones with the third wheel on the back), can safely perform a 3 point landing because the third wheel is designed to withstand it.
@Sableagle6 жыл бұрын
A "perfect three-point landing" is an early-20th-Century taildragger thing, coming in slow and gentle and putting the wheels and the tail down at the same time rather than coming in fast and landing on just the big wheels first or coming in slow and belly-flopping it. In an ideal landing, the wheels touch the ground quite gently with the plane going upwind (lower ground speed at same airspeed) at very low speed. To fly (nearly) level at very low speed, you have to lift the nose and increase the angle of attack of the wings. Don't increase it past 15° or you'll stall and wreck stuff, but 14° is fine. SE5a, Sopwith Pup, Albatross, Tiger Moth, Hurricane, Mustang, Bf-109, Spitfire et cetera with the nose 14° up is pretty much landing on all three wheels at the same time. Jaguar, MiG-23, Eurofighter, Viggen, Drakken, 707, 737, Cessna 172 et cetera with the nose 14° up is only landing on the main wheels under the wings.

In parkour you bend your legs, arms, and do a shoulder roll, which spreads out the impact across your back and converts donwards energy to forwards landing. Also the Batman picture in your video looks like he's not actually on his knee, that landing looks fine.
@epicswordmewz70074 жыл бұрын
Parkour and science person here! I can confirm. The best way to land is a roll. A judo roll. It takes much longer to stop, and the force is applied to the stronger length of your spine. Regular landings apply it the weak way. So, if you want to take a long fall (12-15 ft.) and walk away fine, learn to parkour roll.

A follow-up video for this could be a Parkour video. When they land, they roll and flip to scrub off as much momentum as possible.

can you prove flat earthers wrong and do an episode called: "why you do not want the earth to be flat." your science and knowledge can prove gravity exists, and that if we were a flat earth, we'd have no night time and you can show just how different the world would be if was only day according to flat earthers. things would die out. then they make an excuse as to... oh the sun just turns off. is it just me or dose that sound scientifically and physically impossible? please de-bunk the flat earth belief once and for all, i believe you are the only one who can do so.

Angel Ky. Can anyone prove that the earth spins?I challenge anyone to take a helicopter and hover above the earth 1000 ft in one postion and take a video showing the surface of the earth moving.

I am a civil engineer, and also a martial artist. I know people at my old dojo who were chosen as extras for horror movies specifically because they know how to fall. The first part of what you said, about landing on your feet and slowly crumpling to spread out the impact time, is dead on. However, when you plant you feet you want to give yourself a little bit of forward or backward moment, and roll to end up with the final landing on your back. This serves to spread the final impact force across your entire body, rather than just your legs. This helps ensure that the resultant stress across any individual member in your body is not enough to cause damage. However, you need to have a lot of experience doing this on the mat before you try it in real life, as there is a real risk of landing wrong and breaking your neck.

I always thought the super hero landing looks cool exactly because of how dangerous it is. It's a demonstration of the heroes' physical capabilities (or technological capabilities like in the case of iron man & batman). A bit like the insane demonstrations performed by shaolin monks.

Well he explains why they do it. It's just faster so you don't have to waste time recovering landing like you normally would

I accidently did a Superhero landing once. Was doing some rappelling training in the Guard. I went over the edge and hanging on like normal, looked over my shoulder and my Belay-man was goofing off. Turned back around and I just messed up and let go and fell straight to the ground and did a Superhero landing. (1 story luckily). I have a bad knee to this day.

Dark Zero Some of the coolness is lost if after the landing he clutches his knee, goes into fetal position and cries like a baby.

Wouldn't the force applied be divided by the three contact points. So Batmans bones wouldn't break.

My question on watching the rock climbing gym landings: Is it him, or is it Pantene?
@ginnyjollykidd5 жыл бұрын
Pantene breaks my hair! I wouldn't recommend it even if you have the conditioner.
@ginnyjollykidd5 жыл бұрын
I recommend Elvive. The shampoo doesn't break my hair, the drying is milder, and the conditioner does separate out the hair well. Use it in palm quantities and pat it down your hair before you massage.
