I have a hunting dog and it is super easy ... when I leave I just give him the "stay" command. He knows that he has a job, which is to stay, and waits even hours. No hugging etc pp. He needs a task and he gets it. He also never ever gets food while Imam away. And he gets food 3x a day in small portions. When I come back, he never gets first attention, he has to wait until I am undressed. THEN I give him time, to greet, lick my face , sniff my hands. Etc. Main mistake is that we tend to consider a dog being a small human and he is not. He has his own rules and processes and I try to understand them.

We always set the alarm before we go out. We believe the beeping lets our dog know not to expect us back for a while. One time we fed our dog right before leaving, thinking it would provide a distraction. Big mistake. When we returned she was frantic. She is use to coming to me to "thank" me for her meal and I was not there! Poor pup.

I never had a dog, until my daughter decided to get one when she started medical school. But soon, she figured it was not easy to take care of the dog while in medical school. So, I ended up with a beautiful White German Shepherd called Bellissima. (There is a picture of her on my Channel). She is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen! And every time I leave the house, she looks at me as if to say: "Where the hell you think you are going?" and "Can I go with you?". And looking at her beautiful eyes and her long ears, melts my heart. So, most of the time, I end up taking her with me everywhere I go!

I've owned dogs all my life. In my experience teaching your dogs that you are leaving but will be back is no big deal. As long as they've learned that you're always coming back they'll be fine and not have to suffer through a period of separation anxiety. For me it's as simple as a phrase I use every time EVERY TIME I go someplace. I don't know how they do it but they always seem to know (spooky - almost before I do) that I'm going somewhere. They will get anxious and animated until I walk to the front door and say to them, " P G E, guys, P G E, Protect the cats, guard the house and eat the burglars." Of course they probably have 0 o understanding of what I just said, BUT - as soon as they hear that phrase they know that I will be back. They calm down and stand by the door until I leave. They're fine. Don't bark after I'm gone. Don't eat shoes or chew on stuff while I'm gone, nor do any of the other things dogs do when their people/person leaves. Works for me. The key is using the same phrase every time ya leave. Start out with it when you know you won't be gone long and work your way up to being gone longer. Always use exactly the same phrase. All the dog needs is a built in trained assurance that you'll be back. The phrase will do that for them. Oh yeah - it works on just 1 dog too, but it works better if you've got 2, or some cats that are part of their family.

My little girl, Zoe (my Maltese, Shih Tzu) dog and I developed our routine I thot she will be confident enough once this becomes a habit whenever I have to leave the house for few hours or if it’s only necessary. But she’s very smart whenever I get up early and hop in the shower, she senses I am going away or leaving to somewhere on that day. But my trick always work guys. At first, she cries but whenever I keep doing this routine, until she realises that I hold on to my promise that I will come back, after a while, she started to get used to our routine and now she’s so confident that I will return and come back home. I always tell her to sit at the front door and wait for me till I come back, then, promised her always that I will give her a cuddle after I washed my hands after coming home to her, till it became habitual between us. That’s why, now, my Zoe stop crying coz she knows well that mum will soon be back again to give her a cuddle and a treat. What amazes me and makes me more excited is to see her always and truly waiting for me - and seeing her little tail wagging for excitement seeing me back home! I encourage you guys to make a deal with your loving pets and when you promise them something, make sure that you will do it till they become confident enough and believe that they won’t be alone at all and that you will surely come back! That’s how I gained my little Zoe’s confident instead of having a separation anxiety guys! But mind you, it takes a while and varies on how your pets will react on it because it is ou or us, who will help them believe that it will be alright! So,far, ever since, we’re both feeling secure, peaceful, free stress and both seeing each other with joy and happy together - not just my Zoe but I feel confident myself thinking my little girl is going to be alright - she’s always alright when I arrived home, she’s happy seeing me back with her tail wagging excitingly all the time! Btw,it says here not to leave the TV on. But I honestly do leave our TV on for her but tuned only with her favourite tv shows or series that she loves, amuse her and will entertain her to keep her mind destructed. So, far, I never left her with any tv shows or anything that will make her feel more scared at all, besides, I know what she loves and what she hates. I don’t encourage to leave my little girl, Zoe with toys around as I thot something might have had happened wrong esply when I’m not around for few hours. The sound of the TV is enough for me to leave her amuse and at the same time, gives me peace of mind not to worry any hazards around er while I’m not home.

We have the perfect solution for this, at 14 1/2 yr old our JRT has never once been away from us. Not left alone, not put into kennels, not left with other people. If she cannot be somewhere, then we do not go, it's that simple. Dogs are sentient beings, they are a human child at 2 1/2 yr old their whole life. If you wouldn't do it to a child ... DO NOT do it to a dag.

Yea, they do actually understand! 😂 Had one that counted up to 4. Sadly they died within a year of each other having reached the grand old age of 13 in human years, pensioners in dog years. You know what? I wish we’d have done it sooner than our late 40s. We have had a rescue dog for the last year (she’s a joy) and are now in the process of adopting another rescue to provide her with doggie companionship.
