Horrendous work. That blocking plate was installed poorly causing it to crimp. Put the screws in from one side to the other to prevent that. You put them into the corners without paying attention to the middle. Nothing tape won't solve, right? How about some mastic?

This is an excellent video on why you should NEVER hire a handyman to work on your house. At least he didn't cut through any floor joists from what I can tell.

Worst quality DIY work I have seen.

Like the other comments, I don't agree with the job. But for you not being an hvac guy, I'll still give you the innovation award. People don't look for free brain surgeons, you pay for a professional. I'm sure your friends appreciated it.

Funny story. They asked me to help their son when he bought his house. It would take forever to cool. Nothing was connected for cold air returns. That job was an easy fix. I’m no HVAC guy for sure. The house was previously renovated and I think they disconnected so they wouldn’t be sucking dust back into their furnace. My best guess.

Respectfully, I view this as sloppy work and would be very upset with a contractor who did this. First, should have painted MASTIC sealant on those gaps before installing the aluminum tape. Also, Have you ever heard of a sheet metal circle cutter? SMH

Yes. I have. I’m no HVAC man I just help friends and make DIY videos for the average Joe. You are 100% right but I did the work for free. I usually do even though I refer to anyone I help as customers. My payment is making the videos. =]

Dude… Did you really just tie a 30” return into a 6” round pipe!? Umm… Do you not not volumes of air flow? And why all the work of hacking those boots into a weird fitting? Just use panning and a could headers down below and cut it into the top of the return trunk. This is the exact kind of work I come back to when peoples stuff doesn’t work due to lack of air flow and just shake my head and wonder what the last guy was thinking when they did something like this!

I’m no HVAC person. This was always a temporary job and I did advise my customer to have a proper trade person that specializes in this work. At the time this was done there wasn’t anyone available so I just did it for free and made a video of my hackary. You would be surprised how many vents I have found not connected from Jack basement renovations and kitchen vents exiting into the attic etc. What I did was not to code that’s certain however I knew then even recovering from brain damage due to a farm Jack because me and the wife were arguing. I wasn’t paying attention. That this job was still better and would not cause mold. Just vent suffocation due to poor air movement. Looking back. Yeah it’s real bad. I agree. 👍🏼 real bad indeed.

@@Alex-gl3vk it’s hack, but I was given a task and originally the hone owner only wanted a minty degree 5” elbow dropped through the floor. If I had to do this again. It would be completely different.

Correct but it is what was asked of me. I was waiting on someone to say something.

I did however give it the best I could with what was available. Originally all they wanted was a 90 elbow 4” joint.
