It's a standard procedure. Once outside the gates of the barracks (or for instance Windsor Castle) 2 guards get the command to move forward to protect the colour or the officer in command. Once within the gates the 2 guards step away to join the rest of the troop. Why it's done this way I don't know.

Notice when the Officer is patrolling he made an error by about turning to his left therefore turning his back to the danger ( ie the front ) a bad mistake.
