San Francisco’s biggest flaw. There’s just no way to have fun with a clutch in that city. If you have a manual, have fun buying a clutch every few years. If you have an automatic, have fun changing your brakes every year!
@ByronGman6 жыл бұрын
This is a great technique, I wish it had been taught in my MSF class. Once you figure out you can just use the rear break to anchor yourself in place while you let out the clutch, starting on a hill is effortless--especially when compared to a manual transmission car! Incidentally, that's also a good reason to leave a decent amount of space between you and any car stopped in front you on a hill or incline. If the car is a manual, its usually gonna roll backwards slightly when starting from a stop, and if the driver is inexperienced, it could end up rolling a lot.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
ByronGman There’s so limited time in the course...so it’ll be on you to take more and practice! Glad this helps :)
@NinkeWestra5 жыл бұрын
with manual transmission cars you use the handbrake to keep the car in place. taking off up a hill then is pretty much the same as on the bike. Slowly let off the clutch, add some throttle and when you feel the car wants to go smoothly release the handbrake. No rolling back at all. (rolling back on a hill start could actually be a fail on your driving test in the Netherlands).

I don't see how the rear brake would help right the bike up. Need the preamble to this move. Once I'm upright no hill scares me.

@@NinkeWestra u shouldn't use ur hand brake, I don't know how it works in the Netherlands but that's a brake u should use only when the car is not powered on (a parking brake for example) but not in a hill start. When at a stop on an uphill, you use the rear brake if your left foot is on the ground. If you are short and the hill also slopes down on the left and you need to put the right foot down, you won't be able to use the rear brake to hold the bike in place. It's imperative to practice putting either foot down and using or not using your rear brake to prepare for both situations.

I posted this same comment on your latest post but realize it may be more applicable here. I like your content and style of teaching. Thank you for all you do to help others learn. I have a rather basic question and I cant seem to find much content on this specifically. What is the preferred method of coming to a controlled stop at a stop sign or stop light? This may be rather simple, but I would like to know a couple of situations in this type of stopping. Do both feet come down? If you know you are going to make a left or right, when do you turn the handle bars? Keep hand on brake (to keep brake light on for those behind you). What if on an incline/decline. Yes, it seems basic, but I want to learn what seems best and best for me rather than adopting bad habits.

I parked my bike in an "over-look" type parking lot on a steep incline. So all the parking spaces are parallel and angled off (angled perpendicular(left and right))to the straight through lane. I don't know if I'm explaining that right. Its all downhill oneway. So I parked in a spot between two cars, nose first. I didn't think much of it until it was time to leave... Now I could only back out! On a very steep incline. Luckily my bike wasn't that heavy (Hornet 919) so I manually managed to push it out enough to get around the cars. I guess the lesson is you need to think about the parking strategy much more -- in this case backing into the spot. Plus, the kick stand will lock with the gravity versus possibly clank off if nose first.

Exactly! Each time you park is a different set of variables to consider...maybe the best place to park is around the block and not fight the environment. All depends :)

Good advice. Helped me a lot moving up to a taller, heavier ADV bike. My current issue is parking the bike on non-level ground with camber. Sometimes if bike leans to far to left toward kickstand, it’s too hard to push up to vertical position to ride off. Also the reverse - If the camber leans too much to right, the bike doesn’t put enough weight into the kickstand and it can tip to the right. Dumped my bike a couple times when I didn’t judge the camber well enough before stopping at roadside pulloffs in hills/canyons. Any advice?

Hills are by FAR the toughest thing for me. Facing uphill and stopped I still struggle to put the bike in gear and go. After just two weeks of regular riding, I feel fairly comfortable (or comfortable with my discomfort) in most situations. But stopping on an upward incline makes me nervous. The gate to my housing complex is at the top of a steep (like 30 degrees) driveway. Got home late today and the guard had to open the gate for me. I stalled out at the top of the driveway, then spent like 5 minutes, which felt like 50, stalling and starting again, trying to catch the friction zone just right. While the guard watched stone faced. Mortifying.

@shiestys42846 жыл бұрын
@@joshuabana1911 because the clutch is starting to grab. If your on an uphill you are equalizing the bikes tendancey to roll backwards with clutch's partial friction wanting to pull the bike forward. It's a balance that takes some practice and you dont want to sit there at a stop light doing it because it will wear your clutch prematurely. However if your at a stop sign or the light is about to change it is an effective way to make it work.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Only relevant if you're on a hill and not already using your brakes. Just release it until you barely start to move and hold it there. It will hold you and your bike still if you're not on the brakes.

Hi Eddie, could you make a video how to ride a scooter, what are the main differences between mc and scooter except gears. I'm currently riding honda 125cc scooter mainly in town and short distances... What we should not to do riding a scooter but it's OK if riding a mc and vice versa? I'll buy a "real" small engine (up to 400cc) motorcycle next year or later. Scooters are very popular in Europe... maybe 1/3 of all 2 wheelers are scooters (my opinion) Greetings from Bulgaria! Thanks in advance!
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Hi!! Yes, besides the no clutch or shifting gears, not much changes involving gear and practicing. It's going to be difficult to go against what's popular in your culture to wearing gear....I'm sure you don't see to many people fully geared up on scooters, right? But it's your life, your skin. If you happen to go down, you don't want to wish you put on those good riding pants with the armor in it or full face helmet, or gloves. Just not worth it...but that's a decision you'll have to make. For the actual riding, you need to spend a lot of time getting used to the throttle and how much is needed at different times. Practicing is your best bet....a lot. I've rode my buddies scooters a bunch and I still apply all my knowledge and skills to it, but since I'm not shifting or having to use a clutch...it's a lot of slow moving hands and practicing. You still need to practice swerving and emergency braking, nothing changes with those two things if you're on a scooter, or steering for that matter. Want to go left (over 10-12mph) push forward on the left handlebar, same with the right. Mainly it's the lower speed things you'll need to practice a bunch.

On the example where you said you may have to put down your right leg in rare moments, how would you use this technique? Totally get it with the other examples but if the road camber was such that the right leg was down, what do you do? Thanks.

Newbie rider from South Africa - I have an issue getting comfortable with my bike, cause I am not able to get past my front gate! It requires me to turn right from a stop, into a steep downhill cobbled street to access the main road. The start from stop is also from an uphill slanted position and that all just freaks me out.. Any advice?

I laid down my bike today because I was going up hill to a stop and was going to turn left. I ended up stopping at about a 45 degree angle towards where I wanted to go. Left foot down and guess what, couldn't reach the ground. Luckily no one saw me, lol. I picked it up, balanced it and walked to the high side to mount. All was good. Lesson learned. Stay 90 degrees to the hill or if you can't, put the high side foot down!

I am not sure if your R1200GS has this option of switching the hill brake when you park your bike. With R1250GS you step twice on the rear break and this activate something like hill parking break. Greetings from Switzerland :-)

This is the problem I'm facing to practice: how do I switch into the 1st gear on time before I come to the stop sign up on the hill? I have a hill situation just as you describe in my neighborhood. Either I go into the 1st gear early before I stop, but it will force me to rev the engine loudly or I stop first with the front break, put my right foot down and switch gears during the stop, which seems more stressful and time-consuming sometimes, and frustrating to whatever driver is behind me. I also don't want to look like an idiot during the road test, should the tester lead me there. What would you suggest would be the best solution for this? Thank you. :)

I came in this situation where I had a heavy pillian in the back seat with me and had to stop in a REALLY steep uphill. I had to stop so that they could go to the shop. Since they were a lil heavy I had to put both my feet in the ground since left foot alone wouldnt have been able to hold it so I stopped, jammed my front brake and it skidded behind a little bit, bare in mind I had to let my pillian get off and both feet were on the ground. in situations like that, could I just turn the bike off and release the cluth fully so that it would not slip back? till the pillian gets off?
@MotoJitsu4 жыл бұрын
I would have stopped on a flat surface first in that situation.
@itsjustsid35024 жыл бұрын
@@MotoJitsu Id have done the same, But the uphill was prolly a 10 min long uphill with the speed of 20 kmph and i was right in mid with mud and debris on the side, I didnt fully slide down or anything, I held the handle down firmly and let the pillian get off tho it was stressful
@trentonhampton196 жыл бұрын
When your stopping say you are in 3rd and you are to close to a red light to shift down can you just stop in 3rd then shift down to first and take off accordingly.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
You can but I wouldn't. If you have to take off because stupid guy behind you isn't paying attention, you're going to want to be in 1st gear in order to take off...and not wasting time downshifting. I'm always in first well before I stop. I just pull in the clutch and keep kicking down til I hit first...no need to re-release the clutch before I stop. I just stop and I know I'm ready to go.
@trentonhampton196 жыл бұрын
Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun so every time you downshift do you have to let the clutch out and will it hurt your bike if you dont?
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
No you don't have to. You can go from 6th to 1st, just hold it in, and keep downshifting. Of course you'll be braking and eventually stopping. It won't hurt the bike at all. The bike's fine.

Ive been riding 4 days and this is how Im already doing it, so thats great, but Im still struggling on hills a bit. Coz that sweet spot, inbetween, releasing clutch, adding some trottle and easing off the back break is tough. Coz, not letting go of the back break early enough, and I overrevv, let go of it too soon, and I start going baclwards which freaks me out lol. Im trying to perfect doing all three at same time. A few times Ive managed it not too badly, but sometimes, I get stuck there for a while, which is very embrassing 😰 at traffic lights with cars behind you. Will this just get easier/better with time/practise? Little hills, Im not too bad at, but the steeper they are, the harder I find it.
@antoniol32716 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed your video's your explanation was very clear. It would have been nice if you would have demonstrated for your Riders the actual steps taken when you are on a hill or at the bottom of the hill for a stop sign or light and have someone recording you to show the steps that you perform you could even slow the video down to show when you accelerate and take off from both positions keep up the good work oh and one other thing I like the way you express the idiots behind you
